Sharing CD-ROM
Is it possible to share a cdrom via Samba? I can share the /mnt/cdrom
directory and see it from the PCs, but how does one take care of the
mount/umount commands that are needed?

pre/postexec
Running system: SuSE 7.2 (kernel 2.2.4) & samba-3.0.0beta1. There is
coexisting Win(Millennium) system at the server (reason: many win partitions
MUST be directly available at the central unit under windows after rebooting
to windows).
People connect their laptops (with small HD and Win2k SP2) to central unit and
samba offers shares with Linux accounts. However, there are many win

[[ CD Server ]]
Hi,
I'm building "cheap" print servers using old
Pentium 133 (150, 200 or 233) with 32 (or 64) MB of
RAM memory. Small HDs (2.1, 3.5, 4.2) GB and using
Debian Sarge (3.1), with kernel 2.6, CUPS and Samba
3.0.10.
The print part is ok, works fine and it is just
information to the background. Now our IT team decided
to put a CD and make the "cheap" print servers became

pre-/postexec in printers-section
Hi,
after updating our printserver from Samba V2.0.6 to V2.2.7 I encountered the
following problem.
Samba does not execute the (root) pre- and postexec within the printers
section.
If you are using these command in another section everything works fine.
Does anybody know if these command are not supported in the printers section
anymore?

Hello world,
I've dug through the docs and googled through the net, but I'm still
unable to fix my Samba (2.2.3a-6 for Debian) setup so that I can print
from my wife's Windows XP laptop.
The server is using Cups and I can print from the server and over the
net from my (Debian) laptop.
The XP box can connect to the server and browse

Loosing Samba Shares Across Segments
I have two Samba servers configure similarly. One shares fine across our
entire network and the other only works within its own segment. I have
poured over the smb.conf files and cannot see what it preventing the one
from crossing segments. These both are Debian 2.2 boxes and I am just
modifying the default smb.conf files. I am hoping a fresh pair of eyes will
help. Any help would be greatly

Phantom sharename
smbclient reports there is a sharename 'l' that points to
/usr/local/Documents on the host, but there is no reference to it in the
smb.conf file. I have puzzled over this for days - I must have missed
something obvious.
Here is the output from smbclient, followed by the smb.conf file with all
the comments removed.

PDC error; can not open passdb database
I am looking to setup a domain server. I have tried and tried and this is the closest I have gotten so far.
The main problem I have is in the user authentication. I am getting an error that the user or password is wrong. Currently it looks like Samba can not access the passwd file. What is this file?
My log for the client give this error:

Samba and CUPS printing
Could someone precisely state what is necessary to add to smb.conf file in
order to have CUPS printing working from Windows clients? My setup is:
Samba 2.2.0alpha3 and CUPS 1.1.6, CUPS is working fine from Linux machine, but
now I'd like to have it working from Windows clients that have Linux machine
as PDC. The documentation is rather confusing, CUPS manual is stating that

Cannot get shares to show up
I apologize if this is a really silly question but I've been messing with
this for awhile now and cannot see any typos that would prevent these shares
from showing up.
I'm trying two things I've never done before so I want to make sure to point
them out:
1) I am using groups in the "valid users" section
2) I am using preexec and postexec on each share

CD-RW Sharing
I am trying to share a CD-RW from the samba server (SuSE Linux 7.3, kernel
2.4.10) using Samba that came with the distribution.
I am using user level sharing and have successfully shared out disk shares
with both r and rw access. I can also access the CD-ROM and CD-RW in read
mode and even do an installation from the CD-ROM to a client.
When I try to create a CD using CD-RW, I get the following

mounting ext usb drive
Hi, trying to mount on demand, external USB drive which is /bkup.
/etc/fstab has it as:

The following does open a share but its not really /bkup and its not

Win2K Workstation Disconnecting Shares from Samba Server
Team:
I have a Linux Server running Debian Testing (2.4.18
kernel) and Samba 2.2.3a-12.1
It's been running GREAT. This is a marvelous product.
I have a minor issue, though.
2 of the 14 Win2K (all at SP3 and fully "Windows
Updated") will "disconnect" the shares on the Samba
server after only a few seconds of inactivity. This
isn't typically a problem, except that

Admin users, file operations and file ownership
Hello,
When a user is defined in admin users, Samba will always do file
operations for this user as root. In my case when these users creates
a new file or directory root i defined as owner of the new files as
well. When only accessing the files through windows, this isn't
usually a problem, but once using linux again, this is a bit
annoying..
Is it supposed to be this way? Is there any

Unable to access and browse a DFS tree
Please help me understand why I am unable to connect to and browse the
newly configured DFS tree that I installed on my Samba server according
to the instructions found in Chapter 18. "Hosting a Microsoft

Irrespective of whether I try to access the dfs file tree from either
the local file browser (and choosing the SMB tree) or from
