Does smbtar have a size limit ?
Hello. I'm trying to use smbtar/smbclient (2.0.3) to copy
an NTFS share on an NT Server, onto a Solaris 2.5 system.
The NTFS partition is 10Gb. At the 2Gb mark, the tar stops.
No errors, the file just stops. The process (smbtar) returns.
Is this a problem with Solaris 2.5 ? I believe it is, and if
I upgrade to 2.6, I can create larger tar files. However, does
anyone know if

smbtar: stdout & gzip
I need to zip the output of smbtar, but it seems to me that the tar extensions of smbclient don't support any zip option; if I'm wrong please tell me and stop further reading :)
I'm trying to pipe the output of smbclient/smbtar to gzip.
Basically something like:
smbclient '\server\share' -E -N -Tc - | gzip > test.tar.gz
However I have a problem with smbclient tarring to

Possible long filenames problem with smbtar
Hi
I am using Samba 2.0.6 on a SUN SPARC Solaris 2.6 machine. I compiled
Samba using SUN cc with CFLAGS of "-fast". All the remaining configure
parameters were left unspecified.
I have been trying to use Samba to backup a nerwork of PCs onto the UNIX
box. Each PC has a shared network drive, and the user issues an smbtar or
smbclient backup command. eg.
% smbclient //dcmbpc/C

have an Epson Stylus printer which I am trying to print to from the
Linux boxes...... can I get it to work......

smbtar cannot recognize space character in filename
Hi. My friend has a problem that smbtar cannot recognize space character
in specified filenames. He tried to execute following command line
to back file "long file name" up:
$ smbtar -s SERVER -p PASSWORD -x SHARE -u username -t /tmp/backup.tar \
"long file name"
but smbtar tried to include three files as 'long', 'file' and 'name'. :-(

NT & Win98 slow copies
Howdy all:
For those who are curious (eg, Peter de Groot
<pdgtech@wantree.com.au>) here are the (I think) relevant posts
from recent samba digests concerning win98 and or NT performance
problems copying files between local drives and samba shares. It
looks like there should be some new options to play with in the
next samba release. Could Jeremy or Andrew confirm?

Keep-timestamp-in-`get'-patch for smbclient in samba-2.0.3
--------
--Multipart_Thu_Apr__8_13:33:51_1999-1
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII
Hello guys,
I always wondered why smbclient keeps timestamp in `put'ting a file
but does not keep it in `get'ting a file. Alternative to keep the
time stamp in `get'ting file is to use -Tc option or smbtar script,
but they are a bit hairy for interactive use, and it can only dump
files with an

and two PC's are connected on a local LAN. I can map network, move
files, etc. However, when I try to use smbtar I get an error. The unix
server is hobbs, the two PC's are calvin and marmaduke. The C: drive on
calvin is named drive_c and set for share r/w. I can use tar from the

Win98 not transmitting passwd to samba server
Hello
I cannot get my Windows98 machines to connect to my Samba server(2.2.4)
shares. It appears that my Win machines are not transmitting the password.
The Samba server looks OK. On the server machine, "smbclient -L <server> -U
user1" prompts me for a passwd, then, after authentication, displays the
shares. When I attempt to map a share from my Win machines, the samba log

[newbie]: Samba as a server for Win98 PCs
Hello I do apologize for sending a newbie question but I need to know for
sure if what I am planning is worth spending the time.
I have 12 Win98 PCs with public IPs connected to the Internet. I want:
1) Turn one of the PCs to a linux box with samba.
2) That the linux PC provides login access to the other PCs. (I want to
eliminate the possibility of the users log in a Win98 PC and wreck

Win98/HP Printer problem. Partially Solved.
I set up a print/fax server here using RH Linux 6.0, and Samba 2.0.3. The
printer is an old (but still very reliable) HP Laserjet 4. Printing from
the Linux box using lpr works fine. However, whenever someone tries to
print from a Windows98 box through SAMBA, there is an extra page printed
on the end. This gets really annoying to the users, more so because the
extra pages cannot be put back into

USTAR format in SMBTAR
We've been having problems using SMBTAR to back up some of our PCs. It
seems that the tar format used by SMBCLIENT only supports a 100 character
path name. Some of the new Microsoft Software generates longer file names.
This causes an error when you attempt to write these files out to the tar
device.
I have developed a patch that will cause SMBCLIENT to write these files in
USTAR format (an
