Samba and Win98 dail up connection
I have a home network with my dial up connection on the windows 98 machine. Since I have installed SAMBA and configured the computers to see each other, I can no longer pull up a website on the windows 98 machine. The problem is that I have assigned a permanent IP address for the Intranet. I have to use DHCP for the dail up connection. Therefore the IP address that I assign to Windows machine

A different Win98 password problem
I can not get a laptop to running Win98 to mount samba shares on a Linux box, and I don't think it's the normal encrypted password problem. Here's the setup: Linux box has a class B ethernet connection to the internet and a class C connection to the laptop. +-------------------+ | Linux |--eth0--1.2.3.4---->internet | box

Samba's Printer Going Off-Line (after a Win98 Machine speaks to it)
Hi, I have a light firewall machine that also acts as a Samba print server for a Win32 host on my intranet. For some reason, if the Win98 machine hasn't printed for an extended length of time, the printer goes off-line. When the Win32 tries to print, the printer throws an error and we have to unplug the printer and then plug it back in. It then tries to finish the print job which

No print to Samba (Linux) printer from Win98 - SOLVED.
I now have the deskjet print printing from my Win98 box. Something in the "hpdeskjet" entry was causing the error of "No machine name found" to appear when I tried to print from Win98. I fixed this by deleting the entry and re-creating it. I also specifically added allowed IP addresses instead of using "all" in the config file. I created a generic text printer

No print to Samba (Linux) printer from Win98
I'm stuck. I have Samba running on my Red Hat 7.2 Linux box. I can mount by remote dirctory on the Linux box via Samba. But I can't print to the Linux printer. I have a Linux printer installed and I can print to it using lpr. I have a printer configured in Samba and can see that from the Win98SE box. I've clicked on the Samba printer name and configured a Win98 printer.

Win98 domain logons unreliable
I've got Samba 2.0.6 set up for domain logons, and they kinda work. However, about 2 out of 3 times it doesn't work on the first try. Almost always, my log on succeeds if I continue trying, usually 2-5 more times. The workstation is Windows 98. I can't roll this out to my clients until I can get this to work every time, on the first try. I've looked through the list archives, and

Browsing Win98 shares from NT on a Samba-controlled domain
I am running a small network consisting of a few Win98 machines, 2 NT (SP6) machines and a Samba 2.0.6 PDC. I am using domain logons, and everything is working fine. However, when I try to list the shares on a Win98 box fron an NT machine, having logged on with a domain-authenticated account, the Win98 boxes return an "Access Denied" error. If I do the same with a local account on the

TR: File system error (1026) - Win98 FR&EN and extended character s
This issue might interest you, because it solves filenaming incompatibilities between Windows (in different languages), and Samba. In fact, the problem is in Windows, and not in Samba (surprising, isn't it ? ;-) By the way, thanks to you for your documentation, which helped me a lot resolving this issue. Win98 zero-length encrypted passwords
All - Client: Win98, first version Server: Linux Mandrake, Samba 2.0.7 I'm trying to setup a Samba server to replace a customer's evil Windows 98 server, and have run into a problem. When used with encrypted passwords, it doesn't work. I tried all of the usual cures, and found that it worked perfectly if I enabled plaintext passwords in Win98. When I switched back to encrypted

"Called name not present" - using smbclient from linux to access win98
Hi, I am quite confused by the following observation. I tried to use smbclient on a linux to access a Windows 98 se. --- Smbclient //IP address/sharefolder -U username%passwd. I got some errors like Session request to [Ip address] failed (called name not present). But I can use the same command from the same Linux to access a Window 2000 machine. I also noticed that If I use the the

No printer status on Win2K client; Win98 and Linux clients are OK
My Win98(SE) Samba clients can query the Samba-exported printer status, but Win2K(SP3) clients cannot. Both clients can actually print documents. I am running Samba v2.2.3a on a Linux (Red Hat v7.3) system. This server makes 2 printers (via a LPR subsystem) and several shared directories available to our Linux, Win98 and Win2K (soon to be WinXP also) clients. From a Win98 client, print

Unencrypted/encrypted passwords when connecting from Linux to Win98
I am trying to use Samba between a RedHat Linux 9 system and several Win98 PC's. From the Win98 systems, I can see and access the Linux folders I have made available. I can see the Win98 PCs and their shared directories from the Linux box. Understanding that Win98 requires encrypted passwords, I have set the "encrypt passwords" keyword in the smb.conf file to "yes".

SAMBA rejecting passwords from Win98 clients - the fix
There have been several postings about this phenomenon and we too fell into it when we introduced Win98 clients onto the network. Somewhere on the web I found the answer: By default Win98 sends passwords to a server encrypted, and by default SAMBA compiles with encrypted passwords switched off. Therefore the password one types in from a Win98 client is received by SAMBA in an encrypted form.

Need some speed help - Linux to Win98 is slow
I need some help from those folks I've seen on this list with the speed problems. I noticed while printing to a smb printer from my Linux box tonight (which I just managed to get running) that the speed is horribly slow. I did some tests - the results follow. Transfer from Win98 to Linux ---------------------------- smb: \> get 1mbyte.txt getting file 1mbyte.txt of size 1024702 as

%U and %u different between XP and Win98
I want to use %U to map My Documents to each individual's directory on the Samba server. This is working fine in Win98 but in XP %U maps to "guest" when I log in as "george". In Win98 %U comes across as "george". I am running Samba V 3.0.20 Linux kernel 2.4.22 Slackware 9.1.0 All Win98 and XP machines are in a domain with the pdc on a different box from

Win98 Password Stumbling Block (Resolution)
For those of you that have had/are having problems getting Win 98 clients to correctly authenticate, I have identified a stumbling block which I had to deal with. Specifically, EnablePlainTextPassword *must* be a DWORD value. In following the instructions found here, http://us1.samba.org/listproc/samba/October1998/0321.html and on the Microtheft web site, I installed the ptxt_on.inf file from the

samba and win98 grief
I noticed a few weeks ago that I was no longer able to access shares on a win98 box called cs198787-a. This used to work but it's now broken and I have no idea why???? I'm going nuts trying to fix this. I've even gone out and bought the book "Using Samba" .... great book btw. The samba server is running on a SuSE linux system and passes all the tests in the

win98 on a second hard drive
Is it possible to configure syslinux.cfg on a floppy to start Win98 on a secondary hard drive? If so, how is this done? Currently I have Linux and Win98 on the primary hard drive, and when I attempt to use the floppy to start Win98 on the second hard drive, I simply start Win98 on the first drive. I have tried many different approaches, all to no avail, and I would really appreciate some
