latest samba_2_2 problem
Just tried the latest cvs samba_2_2 (trying to avoid the winbind memory leak thing).
It configured, compiled and installed fine, but when it came up there was an issue. When my Windows users (Win98 ad Win2K) went into explorer, they could see no names on the folders in samba shares, just blank folders.
I quickly put it back to the older 2.2.2 configuration and everyone is back to normal. Was

How do you guys protect Samba shares from Win32 based viruses?
That's pretty much the question. I've got Symantec
NAVCE running on my NT server protecting itself, the
Windows clients and the Exchange server, but what do i
do about my Linux based Samba server?
Will a linux based AV app search for Win32 based
viruses?

How do you run swat in forground mode?
Is there any way to run swat from the command line instead of starting it
from inetd? I'm trying to add some features (mostly, I want to make a
backup of the smb.conf file before commiting a new one) and I want to run
swat from inside of gdb. Is there a way to start swat in the foreground and
have it listen on port 901?
Thanks in advance,

Samba and Swat
Hi all,
Afraid this is a real newbie question and I'm totally stuck.
I've installed Samba and then Swat from the RPMS on my Red Hat 7.2
distribution. Everything seems to have install correctly except that when I
try to run Swat I get the message that access has been denied on 127.0.0.1
port 901.
Is there something that I'm missing here, or does anyone have any
suggestions please?

can't find "pam_winbind.so"
Hello to all,
I am trying to setup samba 2.2.2 with winbind and i
have gone through all the documentation that i could
find in regards to this. Everything has been going
smoothly up until now. The html docs for setting up
winbind states that i should copy "pam_winbind.so" from
the /samba/source/nsswitch/ to /lib/security/, simple
enough but i do not have "pam_winbind.so" in

I asked yesterday if anyone has had an error message stating the "cannot

Can some please respond?

Please help with winbind setup
I have been (unsuccessfully) trying to get this up and
running for the past few days. I have successfully
setup samba itself NUMEROUS times but this winbind
stuff has me stumped.
I have built a fresh box for this server using Turbo
Linux server 6.5 and samba 2.2.2. I have followed all
the docs and man pages that i could find.
1. I have samba compiled (using --with-winbind
--with-pam) and

SWAT issue
I have had a RH5.2 server running Samba up for a long time. I upgraded to
Mandrake 6.0. It broke Samba, so I reinstalled using the RPM on the CD.
Samba works just fine, but SWAT will not! If I try to start it manually
(/usr/sbin/swat) it just hangs.
In /etc/services I have a line like this:
swat 901/tcp
In /etc/inetd.conf I have:
swat stream tcp nowait.400 root

SWAT not saving a conf file!
Hey guys,
I've been using samba for quite some time now (over a year). I have a problem however, and that is that I can not seem to get SWAT to work properly. I need to have SWAT working for some of the management cluebies around here (bad idea if you ask me). Anyways, everything for SWAT is fully installed, and it appears that it works properly. Theres just one problem. You can't save

Swat inactive, xinetd issue?
Since I've upgraded to Redhat 7.2 I cannot get swat to work,
I am using the 2.4.7-10 kernal with samba 2.2.7 installed.
I have checked all the applicable files, edited them accordingly as per
Gary Fournerat's
excellent How-to. No joy.
I am pretty certain this is an xinetd issue. I never had this difficulty
with inetd.
I know that SAMBA is running as I can see the server from this

disabling swat during compile
Howdy folks, I am compiling 2.2.8 from source on a Caldera Openlinux 2.3 box
to replace the 2.0.x version that is there. I do NOT want to use swat at all.
How do I stop it from being compiled/installed? The only swat related
configure switch I could find is where to put the swat stuff, but nothing to
disable it period.
TIA

SWAT
I was playing with this on my test machine, (redhat 5.2, samba 2.0.3)
worked great, and I was really impressed.
So I decided to install this on my office machine. (redhat 4.2, samba
2.0.3) and the only significant difference is that on the
office machine, I use encrypted passwords.
I cannot get swat to authenticate on the second machine. That is, no
matter what account, password combination

almost printing
Ok, I've managed to print to my HPDeskjet 694c attached to a Solaris 8 box
running samba 2.2.2 from Win98. Problem is with the left margin, there are
these little lines (garbage) running down the 1st column on the left side
of the page. Also, when I print a page from Word 97, the whole page doesn't
print (about 95% of it) and starts a little too far down the page. Printing
was perfect

how to check open connections/files without smbstatus / swat
Hi,
I have one user who should be able to _view_ all open files and
connections on a samba server.
He should not be allowed to login to the server by telnet or ssh to use
smbstatus, nore should he be able to use swat as long as he could view
the configfile.
So my question: is there a way to configure swat for one user to only
view the opened connections? Or dose someone has an other idea?

Trouble installing SWAT on a Samba 4 Alpha 13 build on Ubuntu Server
Hello all,
I have setup a complete domain using Samba 4 on my Ubuntu server 32 bit
machine. I am using the Alpha 13 build (it was actually in the Ubuntu
Repos). I am trying to setup swat to make it easier to manage shares. I
have followed the instructions at https://github.com/rvelhote/GSoC-SWAT but
I am having a few problems.
When I run ./run I get the following errors:
