Remote Win98 logging of Samba/Linux box
Sent this one in the other day but did not get a reply! When first time logging into Samba (or share), using an dialup internet modem connection, it seems to take between 50-70 seconds to respond to a Windows 98 request. You can see the request leaving the modem and can count the 50-70 seconds before the modem responds from the Linux Server box. Don't see the same problem if I telnet, ftp or

Inquiry:External USB modem and Remote PC Access?
Dear All Please be informed that I checked for the presence of internal modem on my CentOS server , as the followings : #dmesg |grep -i modem #lspci |grep -i modem #lshw |grep -i modem According to the output , it seems that my CentOS client does not contain internal modem . So I decided to add external USB modem and make use of an PCAnyWhere like application that enables for Remote PC Access .

Speex over 56.6K modem
I use Speex with dialup modem users. Even if the dialup modem is "56K", you should assume that upstream bandwidth available is only 20-30kbps at the most. I use 16kHz wideband mode and VBR quality 2. Also, I send 80ms (4 frames) per packet, because there is an overhead of approximately 33 bytes per packet due to UDP (8 bytes), IP (20 bytes), and PPP (~5 bytes) headers. If you

dialup Win95 -> samba
Thanks to the four people who replied to my original posting (appended below, subject "Win95 problem"). I've made progress but have now hit a new problem. The solution to the original problem (How do you make a "standalone" client "log on to the network"?) was simply to tick the "Server Type/Log on to network" checkbox in the dialup properties.

once again: [Too many errors (client not receiving data fast enough)]
Ok, I have seen that this is a common issue, and has been answered many times.... but I think mine is a bit different. Sorry if I am just being thick.

Local Setup:

Local net is 100mb, 9 boxes that don't do much, so no bandwidth issues.

Cable modem - 2mb down, 128k up (is there someplace I can 'measure' this?)

modem through Zaptel/Digium?
This is just a low priority curiosity question because I have a usable workaround. I have Digium card that uses the Zaptel driver (can't get to my home machine right now to get the exact model, but it probably doesn't matter). It's a card with one POTS line and three extension hookups. I'm using Asterisk 1.4 and Zaptel 1.4.7 . One of the extension ports is connected to a modem

Re: Bridging.
Kevin; I use a 56k dialup modem. It doesn''t matter if you use a dailup modem or Broadband as that interface is defined to Linux and Shorewall in the normal way. You must not add it to the bridge as all data passing through the bridge bypasses the ip stack therefore Shorewall/netfilter will not see it and you will not have a firewall just a bridge. You can attach a

modem simulation
I've seen there are spandsp, iaxmodem to simulate a modem for receiving faxes under asterisk. Hylafax can be "tricked" to think it is a real modem. Can I create a dialup/access server with the same method? Can ppp run on top of this "software" modem?

ices0 config for high and low bandwidth users
Hello, Does anyone have a config for the above? I've got several static playlists of mp3's that i'd like to offer. Offering them for high bandwidth cable dsl users works fine, but i'd like to give them out to dialups as well. Currently whenever a dialup user connects the stream1 plays for about two seconds then goes sluggish. I'm theorizing that i'm giving to much for

Data calls through TDM2400E
Hello. Has anyone been able to successfully make data (dialup modem) calls through a TDM2400E? We're able to make fax and credit card calls fine, but cannot successfully make modem calls using a 56K modem connected to a patch panel connected to an FXS port which then gets bridged to an FXO port connected directly to a phone line. We have 'echocancelwhenbridged=no' set in

Centos 5 Live CD
I just tried the Centos 5 Live CD on my Thinkpad T41. It works pretty good but did not recognize my Laptop's modem or WiFi (I guess no surprise there). I do have a CardBus modem that is not a Win-modem that I could try when I get home. I did not see anyway to configure a PPP dialup call. Is there a way to run kppp or Gnome's equivalent? -------------- next part -------------- An

com ports
Hi everyone, I am in the last stages of converting my business to Linux. All software is now open-source or running under wine. Except one. The software supplied by my bank. This runs fine under wine apart from the dialup to the bank. No matter what settings I use for the modem, I always get the message that the modem cannot be initialised. Here's what I have confirmed so far: The com port

Was: Win98SE and Samba 2.0.10 Problems
Well the weekend didn't bring any solutions to this unhappy camper. I spent most of my time trying to narrow down the problem again. I started out by installing a quick copy of ZipSlack on the Win98SE machine to determine once and for all if the problem was a Windows problem or not. Well, I tried a simple FTP from the ZipSlack to my Mandrake 8.0 server and it hung up like in Windows. So I

Questions about PRI lines for modem banks and Asterisk
I have a friend with a PRI coming into a modem bank that is receiving 56K modem calls and some ISDN data calls. He wants to dump his analog office phone lines and use some of the capacity on the PRI. I have been digging through the mail archives and Wiki site on this subject but the information I found doesn't give me a high enough confidence to go buy a few T1 cards and try it out.

<--PRI--> * <--PRI--> modem bank - problems
Gentlemen We are attempting to use * in a simple switching application: +-----> office lines | V LEC <--PRI--> * <--PRI--> modem bank (56k dialup modems) The problem is that (even with no office lines active) the modems have difficulty establishing a connection, the connection is slow (way too slow for 56k modems) and the connections are

FW: Was: Win98SE and Samba 2.0.10 Problems
Well as a further to my last, I broke down and put a copy of Win98SE on a spare HDD in my Mandrake server box. First moment it was up and running, I tried to transfer the files between the two problem computers and BINGO! It worked. So sadly I must assume that the problem must lie on my Linux server :( As I have previously tried both Mandrake 8.0 and Redhat 7.1 and end up with the same transfer
