Mysterious connection disappearances
I installed a samba server about a week ago for a client and have been
having some trouble with it. The two problems that occur are:
1. The "Microsoft mail postoffice" occasionally has files with deny_all
locks on them that prevent other users from sending email to the user.
My first impression was that this was an Outlook issue, but rebooting
the entire (client) computer does not

Extreme samba newbie needs help
Hi,
I am having some troubles setting samba up nicely on my Slackware 7.1
machine. It is currently just a web/ftp server mainly for my personal use
at home. I downloaded the tarball samba-2.0.7 and did everything to install
it "properly." I edited services to include:
netbios-ns 137/tcp # NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns 137/udp

Samba 2.2 alpha3 released
Hi all,
I have just released the fourth alpha snapshot
of what will become Samba 2.2.0.
It's available from the usual ftp sites, in the alpha
directory as :
<ftp mirror>:/pub/samba/alpha/samba-2.2.0-alpha3.tar.gz
If people could test this snapshot out and provide feedback
about what is broken and let the lists know that would help.
The problem acting as a PDC for

Next stable version of Samba.
Hi all,
I'd like to ask to make a version number change
for the next stable release. Currently we're planning to
release something we're planning to call 2.0.8.
However, what I'm actually busyly creating in the CVS tree
is HEAD minus vfs and dfs and some of the TNG mods.
This is a very big change to call 2.0.8, which implies a
minor rev. on 2.0.7.
Now I still want to

Samba 2.0.6 Interfaces
We're had some recurring problems with nmbd's on Solaris 2.7 and Irix 6.5
failing to renew their WINS registrations in a timely manner causing the
records to become tombstoned. While we've solved it by issuing "pkill" and
"killall", respectively, of nmbd nightly from root's crontab, I wanted to
alert the authors and other administrators to the problem so similar

Samba 2.0.7pre3 snapshot released.
Hi all,
I just released Samba 2.0.7pre3, available from :
ftp://samba.org/pub/samba/alpha/samba-2.0.7pre3.tar.gz
This is the third snapshot of the code that should become
the official Samba 2.0.7 and is feature complete (ie. I'm
only going to accept bug fixes, not more features).
This is *not* production code, but should work well as a
file and print server, and contains fixes for

The "security mask" parameter
I am a new Samba user so forgive my ignorance.
I am using Samba version 2.0.6 on HP UX 11 and I need to use the "security mask" parameter to prevent even the owner of a file from changing the read
only attribute
(by right clicking on the file from a Windows NT 4.0 desktop) if the file is read only (Unix permissions: 0440). This is what I have in the
"smb.conf" file:

2.2 release imminent.
Well, as Andrew shouted at me again this weekend it's getting
to be about that time.... :-) :-).
Yep, we're thinking we should do an official 2.2 Samba release
early next week, so if you have anything you can't live
with, now would be a good time to tell us....
:-).
It's been gestating longer than an elephant, so it's really
time to let it out into the world and do its own

NT4 RPC error browsing [homes]
I brought this up some time ago at comp.protcols.smb, which showed
that others have run into the same problem, but so far I haven't found
a solution anywhere. The problem is that since Y2K, I haven't been
able to browse the auto homes share [homes] with Win NT4 (details
below).
Does anybody have any idea what the cause of this problem is, and
better yet, how to fix it?
Thanks,

URGENT: WIN2K INVALID VOLUMENAME
Dear Samba Users
I detected a strange behaviour between Win2k Prof. and Samba and I hope
somebody can help me
fixing it.
The Bug:
=======
Samba does not correctly return the volume name back to win2k.
In the man pages it is written that by default the sharename is returned as
volumename.
This works fine for Win98 and NT4 but not for Win2k.
If I say "label v:" (needless to say that v:

Why does Samba 2.0.6 like other systems but not itself?
I'm running samba on a SPARC20 running Solaris 2.4.
I have been running v2.0.5a successfully for quite some time.
I've tried a couple of times to move up to 2.0.6 but there seems
to be a problem that I can't diagnose easily.
2.0.6 builds with no problems
2.0.6 installs with no problems
2.0.6 starts up with no problems

AW: Samba across subnets?
If you don't want to type the ip adress of your samba server every time you
connect, add a entry to your local hosts file and lmhosts file.
You will find this files (and sample files with extension ".sam") in the
windows main directory of Win95 and under "system32/drivers/etc" on WinNT
4.0.

MS Excel/NT/Samba timestamp - serious problem, bug?
A rather distressing timestamp issue (to multiple users here). Anyone
seen similar behavior or have a suggestion/solution?
Problem:
Opening and closing an excel file (no changes/keystrokes to file) on
the Samba server causes the file to be saved with time stamp of
closing. (There is no autosave set on Excel - also see other info below)
