[OT] Open source statistical analysis in the news
A student pointed out to me the article

describing recent testimony by Patrick Ball, the deputy director of
the science and human rights program at the American Association for
the Advancement of Science, at the war crimes trial of Slobodan

[OT] Survival and Function as co-primary endpoints in clinical trials. How to simulate in R ?
Dear R-Helpers,
Apologies in advance as this is partly (widely ?) OT. Not sure where to
ask, R is my favorite computer tool (no kidding) and there are plenty of
knowledgable and helpful people on the list.
Background: There are discussions among experts and regulatory
authorities (cf guideline

Could someone remove "lists-rsync@azera.net" (most probably) from the list,
as people who subscribe to lists but require each and every poster to the
list to jump through hoops to have their messages delivered to the
person in question don't deserve a subscription...

<OT> RedHat support
As a parallel question to my thread about CentOS for commercial use,
here's a question I've been wondering about.
How many of you who have RHEL licenses and paid support licenses have
ever needed actually to request support? And if you did was the
support any bit more timely or accurate than community support for
CentOS or other distros?

OT: Aastra 390 - weird problem
Hi All,
I have a weird question regarding my Aastra 390 Analogue Phone.
Yesterday, I upgraded to the latest cvs (from feb 10th to the 13th).
This is when problems began. Now, I realize this probably has absolutely
nothing to do with CVS, but thought I should mention anyhow. I also
tried downgrading to known working version, and no avail.
My problem is as follows - the phone's digits

OT: Pie charts
We regularly get questions about making pie charts, and frequently
veer off into the philosophical and practical issues surrounding that
form of data graphic: human perception of angles and so on.
So while this isn't an R issue, I thought some of you might appreciate
this brief discussion of the efficacy of pie charts:

OT: Unix/Linux Training Online
This is a bit off topic but I was interested in taking some online
classes. I currently have an associates degree in electronics tech
from about 15 years back but was wanting to expand on that and learn
more about linux. Oreillyschool.com has a somewhat affordable online
certificate course in UNIX/linux admin. The downside is I do not know
if there credits would ever transfer if I wanted to

[OT]Web-Based Data Brushing
I apologize for the off-topic post, but my Google search did not turn
up much and I thought people on this list my have knowledge of this.
I am looking for examples of data brushing (i.e. dynmaic linked
plots) either on a web site, or in a web-based application, such as
an AJAX app. Even better if there is a way to do this in R.
Thanks for any help.

(somewhat ot?) purging old maildir messages
I'm using Dovecot (+postfix) to host some personal imap accounts on a
private server (Maildir format). I've got one account that receives
mostly automated mails, and I want to be able to purge messages beyond
a given date (say 30 days).
I know that since maildir uses flat files, I can literally just delete
messages doing something similar to the following with bash:

In addition to the points you made/alluded to, may I also suggest that

OT: OGG in the mainstream
I think when the real-time cbr encoding issues are sorted Vorbis (this is my
experience with oddcast dsp, winamp and icecast 2 win32, big cpu hog) will
start gaining more ground, also I think it will also gain more ground when
it starts getting implemented into the more mainstream software and hardware
products.

Friendly Reminder (OT)
Today, I had a tragic hard drive crash. I hadn''t updated anything to SVN in
two weeks.
I''m posting this here as a reminder to my beloved Rails community.
Everyone, right now..... make a backup of your rails work. Make sure its on
two disks. Many of you already do that automatically, but just make sure its
working.
Two near-release rails plugins were lost in the tragic crash
