LDAP problems: samba searches whole database
Hello I use samba-3.0.7 & openldap 2.2.13. When I try to join a machine-account to the domain, I always get the message "the specified user does not exist". What happens? when I try to join, it seems like the whole samba database is being searched. ldap.log (below) Oct 15 17:25:30 linsam-15 slapd[3079]: => access_allowed: search access to

authentication to ADS via Kerberos at login?
Hello Andrew, I'm a little stuck with my login authentication for my Samba 3 box. With the new features in Samba 3 - Should I be able to provide username@domain & password at login that would authenticate me against our W2K ADS PDC and obtain my kerberos ticket? Please advise on the suggested way to authenticate against our Active Directory domain at login if I'm way off base on

Case sensitive password Win95 client
Hello, I need an answer to the following problem: I have a Samba server with domain logons enabled and with encrypt passwords=no. So I don't use the smbpasswd file, only the Unix password files. When I try to logon with a Win95 client (client for Microsoft Networks, logging on to a domain), people with mixed-case passwords cannot logon to the Samba logon server. Those with a password in

password case sensitivity
Dear all, I have a problem regarding to password case sensitivity. Our company's servers are configured to use plain text passwords with PAM due to historical reasons. My collegues encountered a long delay each time they boot their PC and map the network shared disks. They sometimes even failed connection. The server always says: Jul 18 17:54:37 atlas PAM_pwdb[30192]:

[Fwd: Re: Login script problem!!]
Hello, I had a similar problem with login scripts. I tracked the problem down to any entries in the login script which change directory. Taking 'cd' out of the login script solved the problem. Looking at M$ technet confirmed that this was a problem with Windows. I hope this helps. Regards, Dave -----Original Message----- From: Werner Maes [mailto:werner.maes@cc.kuleuven.ac.be] Sent: 02

Winbind not quite working yet
Hello, I'm trying to get Winbind to authenticate users that don't have local accounts on a SAMBA BDC. I have (3) BDCs (1) PDC running OpenLDAP 2.1.23 pass backend and Samba 3.0. These are on RedHat 8.0 systems. 3 BDC are also slave LDAP and 1 master directory server on the PDC. I went through the Samba documentation CH21 and made modifications to the BDCs and PDC as follows:

Different encrypted samba passwords than Unix passwords...
I may be reading this wrong, but I'm trying to figure out why samba is sometimes trying to do a Unix password lookup to authenticate a samba connect. I have my samba passwords different than my Unix passwords. I'm using my own compiled version of Samba 1.9.18p10. I have an NT4 SP3 box and when I try to access a share through explorer on either of my two Linux boxes with encrypted

yet another wbinfo & getent problem
Hello, I am running a RHEL5 server as a member in a NT4 domain. I am not using an AD. my nsswitch.conf and /etc/pam.d/{login,authconfig,samba} are configured accordingly. (auth-config in RHEL4 is now renamed to authconfig on RHEL5). My problem is that wbinfo -u & wbinfo -g work fine, but getent passwd only returns local linux users; Also smbclient -L localhost -Uusers will only work

Arguments for Samba instead of NT-Server
Hello, Can anyone give me arguments that could convince someone to choose for Samba for file and print sharing instead of setting up a NT-server? Performance ? Stability ? Benchmarks ? Tests that someone has done? Things like: "It's free" or "You don't need a powerful machine" are irrelevant to our administrators. I'm looking for answers on questions like:

PAM auth stage rejection not working
Hi, I have an auth module for PAM that I wrote a few years ago called pam_vsd.so. The idea is that a user must have a certain privilege before they can successfully authenticate. Without the privilege the PAM module will return PAM_PERM_DENIED. However I find that in OpenSSH 3.7.1p2, I can easily subvert this check simply by hitting return 3 times on connection i.e. [nick at localhost

pam_smb authentication
I am appending some documentation by my colleague Bill Eldridge that was actually written for our dial-up service, but should work for you purposes as well. A couple notes. 1.)The user must exist in /etc/passwd on the Samba machine or login to the Samba box will fail. 2.)In the example, we don't set up home directories for the users, we are using it for dial in and they usually want to

modifying password on W2K PDC from Linux (samba 2.2.7-4.8.0)
On May 1st, Chuck Sullivan posted the following: https://listman.redhat.com/pipermail/k12osn/2003-March/007755.html No mention was made of /etc/pam.d/passwd, which is what I think we need to set to enable a user to change their domain password. Our current settings are: /etc/pam.d/passwd: #%PAM-1.0 auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth auth sufficient
