SAMBA digest 2537
Hallo! I have a small question. I wanted to improve Samba-faxing. The system shown in the HOWTO does not include the nice features a faxing-program like Winfax offer. Chain-fax, adressbook and much more. So I began to write a series of scripts to manipulate the incoming fax to send. The text should have all the command on the 1st page. My scripts split the text in two parts: 1st page and pages

Win95 and Win98 - hanging while shutdown
Hallo! I have a small problem. As I installed a Samba-server at one of our customers (office of foreign affairs, AKA consulate), Win98r2 does not want to shut down, the system hangs. It looks like if Windows "forgets" to disconnect the services before shutdown (at least the system hangs - over night (!!) and according to logfiles the workstation has not made any disconnect). As I

NTUSER.DAT, user's settings
Hallo! I have reinstalled the server, specially the Samba PDC. I copied all the data back and the system seemed to work. People were able to log on and had the drives mapped. Now, at the day "0" after reinstall, the users cannot work. The user's settings on the "Windows 2k Professional" machines are not adopted. They all have their desktops and own documents, but the

Browsing from NT 4.0
Hi James, One of the things that NT does different from WIN9x is that it attempts to 'browse' using a null session. This typically means that SAMBA is going to try to make the attachement for the 'null' username as SAMBA's guest account (by default 'nobody'). On a lot of HP systems the 'nobody' /etc/passwd entry is set as uid -2 and gid -2. These uid/gid

Win2k Domain logons
Hi everyone. I just got a copy of Win2k in and have been messing with it. Have a question, and have searched the archives for the answer, but didn't find it. Can Win2k domain logon to a pre-3.0.0 samba server? Or di I need to get TNG running? I can get NT4.0 boxes to authenticate and login fine (Samba pre-3.0.0), but Win2k keeps complaining: "The following error occurred validating

starting smb services at bootup on x86 RH6.1
I am running RH6.1 on an x86 with 2.0.6 installed with an RPM. I am confused as to getting smb to start at bootup. It works fine if I start it manually (/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start). I swear, the 5.2 installation had smb start at bootup, but I can't find the difference between the two. Is the answer 1 - edit the /etc/inetd.conf file (swat needed a line uncommented) 2 - edit the

current master browser = UNKNOWN / failing WINS test #1 on 3.0.23c
I am having trouble with one of my samba PDC's. It does not recognize itself as the domain master browser even though it is set to be so. I can not add machines to this domain and I suspect this is why. Has anybody seen this or know what causes it? Notice this: DOMAIN_ALBANY(3) current master browser = ALBANY_PDC DOMAIN_NYC(2) current master browser = NYC_PDC

Can join domain; can't logon
I had a problem similar to my current one a week or so ago, and I was encouraged to upgrade from Samba 2.2.9 to 3.0.7, which I did. Now that I've completed that nightmare, the problem I initially set out to fix is still there, just different. Namely: I am trying to set up Samba 3.0.7 on a SuSE 9.1 box as an LDAP PDC whose only job will be authentication. Our LDAP server is on a separate

List of magic wins numbers
Hi, I am looking for a list of theses special magic numbers that a samba server (or a windows box) registers with at a wins server. I already know of <00> as a ordinary name, <1b> as a domain. But what's the rest? Is there a list anywhere? Perhaps somewhere in the docs? I have searched them but haven't found anything yet. Thanks, Christopher --

remounting volumes, is there an easier way
All, Over the week-end, one of my volume became unavailable. All clients could not access their mount points. On some of the clients, I had user processes that we using these mount points. So, I could not do a umount/mount without killing these processes. I also noticed that when I restarted the volume, the port changed on the server. So, clients that were still using the previous TCP/port could

Change computer password
Hi, we work on authenticating computers via 802.1x with Samba AD as backend of Radius. Everything looks promising. We ask ourselves if it is a good idea to use the machine account which are created by joining a computer to the AD. We can change machine account passwords with `samba-tool user setpassword COMPUTERNAME$` This works, we have SUCCESS with `eapol_test` on the Radius server. The
