9x/NT/2000 clients with security=server
Hi, I have a problem authenticating users using samba-2.0.6/Solaris 7 (sparc ultra-1), using the security=server option. We want to have a single print-server for both the UNIX and Windows clients on our network. The windows machines authenticate user using an NT4-domain. I've setup samba so that it always runs as user 'lprsmb' used to print to the UNIX-printserver with a wrapper

Win9x clients not 'seeing' each other
Hi there, I have a somewhat wide experience with samba. I've succesfully installed it as a client as well as a PDC on Windows networks. The last time, however, there has been an issue with the win9x stations. I've setup the Samba server over Linux to act as a PDC for the domain. I use dhcp to assign the network configuration to the hosts, and the only protocol installed on them is

Can ping computers in another network, but can't see samba
Hi. We have a successful samba server up and running on our local network. We also have a connection via a 3Com ATM router to another network. I can ping computers on that network, and they can ping the samba server. In network neighborhood I can see their computers. They also see our Win9x/NT/2K systems under their network neighborhood, but they don't see the samba server. If I try

AW: Machines not disappearing from browse list
I've exactly the same problem. My config looks similar to yours: 1 samba as wins server (wins support=yes" on one segment, 1 samba as "wins server client" (wins server = xxx). The "wins server client" never discards machines from segment 1. I looked at the browse.dat and the wins.dat on the server on segment 1. There are no entries of the shutdowned maschines. Only in

Possible Bug?? (was: Win95 & Win98 - NOT WORKING - NT,2000, XP are ok)
Please lend me some expertise... Ok, I know suggesting a bug is a bit impolite, but I cannot find a solution for this and none of the helpful people who have responded have been able to help either... If I come off sounding a bit short it's just because I've tried many things to get these older clients printing. :-) Don't mean to annoy anyone. Appreciate any help! Have several

Mapping of Network Drive through win9x dail-up networking
Hi Thomas, Really Thanks for your advice. I have tried your suggestions but problems still remain. My findings is that some Windows, regardless of version, can map to Samba through dial-up networking but some just cannot. I try to find the difference between these Windows but failed. multiple subnet browsing problem
I having difficulty getting browsing to fully work across two subnets. The subnets (having private addresses - 192.168.x.0) are connected by Linux boxes (RH6.1, one for each subnet) functioning as firewall, IP masquerade and router. On one subnet (call this one LEFT), there is an NT4.0 server as the PDC (also running WINS and DHCP) along with 50 or so clients and other servers (NT, Win9x) in

MS Excel/NT/Samba timestamp - serious problem, bug?
A rather distressing timestamp issue (to multiple users here). Anyone seen similar behavior or have a suggestion/solution? Problem: Opening and closing an excel file (no changes/keystrokes to file) on the Samba server causes the file to be saved with time stamp of closing. (There is no autosave set on Excel - also see other info below) MS Excel 97 SR-2 NT 4.0 SP5 Solaris 2.6 or 2.7 (2

PDC Newbie suggestion Request
For over a year now we have used SAMBA to give Win9x access to our RH Linux 7.x fileserver. Our office is small and we like to keep things simple so we went with plain authentication. If we login we can get on to the fileserver, access shares and our 'home' accounts that we created. If we type the wrong password we are no authenticated but we can still surf the web and browse the

Does Samba need to see the world?
Our ISP experienced backbone problems yesterday. Our backbone provider's backbone provider (EMBRATEL, the newly-privatized telecom company of Brazil) went down for a few hours. That was a big problem itself, but what I'll tell you is a weird side effect: Samba stopped working on our local network!!! I checked DNS, resolv.conf, /etc/hosts, smb.conf, everything! While our Internet

Strange problem connecting via NT
I am running Version 1.9.18p7 and I have a win95 machine and an NT machine connecting via ethernet. I have, for security reasons, reorganized my network to reduce outside threats. The network is set up using RFC1918 addressing, and I am using Linux 2.0.33 to transparent proxy outside requests to the net via a dialup PPP session with a dedicated IP address. The global section of my smb.conf

Problem with Samba on Home Network
I have Samba set up on my Gentoo Linux Box. Our access to the internet is through a broadband modem/router. Internet access in all instances is fine. The problem is that one computer is not showing up in even its own Network Neighborhood. I can access the files on this computer though from the other computer. Samba setup is as follows: The Gentoo Linux box Computer A running samba server: ip

No NT Access after Upgrade
Hello Samba-Pros, I just upgraded from 1.9.18 to 2.0.6, from kernel 2.0.x to 2.2.13 (SuSE 6.3) and to a faster machine. I thought just copying smb.conf, passwd, group, shadow, smbpasswd and my smbusermap should be enough to get the new samba work. All connections from localhost work fine, but suddenly I cannot connect from the NT-boxes. Samba seems to reject my password. It shouldn't be the

seeing/setting file or directory owners from win9x just like from nt/w2k
Hi All, Is there a way (speak command/wsh script) that allows a win9x workstation that is logged into a samba domain server (running onlinux for example) to see from the workstation what owner a certain file or directory has? Under win2k the "dir /q" command does this adequately. And if this is possible, is it then possible for someone to change the ownership of a file to another

NTLM HTTP Authentication - distinguishing between win9x and NT and 2000
Hello, I am trying to get the mod_ntlm Apache module running. I have been playing with the code and find that I cannot distinguish between a IE browser running on win98 and one running on Windows 2000. My Apache server is running on red hat 7.1 x86. The code does the following to distinguish: if ((strcmp(ntlmssp->host,"")==0) &&

windows xp connect to share - cannot change user name from guest
Hi We've been using samba at my work for ages. Now we have a couple of WInXP machines. We do not have a domain or anything, the samba server is just set to user level access control. We log in to windows using the same username as our account on the samba server. Samba and the windows clients are set to use unencrypted (plain text) passwords. The problem is that when we connect to the samba

printing through netbios alias
Hi, We are trying to set up a print server for our Windows domain on Samba 2.2.2 and Red Hat 7.1. It was decided to use a netbios alias for the print server so that it would be easier to move in the future if the need arised. From now on the actual netbios name will be reffered to as "server" and the alias as "alias". This solution has worked well on Win9x clients, however

Signal 11 (cause and workaround found)
I encountered an bug in samba 2.0.7. With the config option "logon home = \\%N\%U\profile" in smb.conf and roaming profiles, smbd panics when the share "%U" is not listed in smb.conf. I had some users for which i forgot to enter the accompanying share in smb.conf. When such a user logged in or logged off, smbd paniced with signal 11. While on logging off the profiles where
