Bug#23903: samba: samba maps username before authenicating with NT password server
Hi, I am the Debian GNU/Linux of the Samba package in this distribution. Today I received this bug report but since I don't use the authentication method this user mentions, I can't reproduce the problem. I heard Jeremy Allison said something about a bug in 1.9.18p8 regarding user mappings and posted a patch but since the patch is applied to the version of Samba this user is using, I am

Changing file permissions from NT
We run a Network of Suns (running Samba) and PC-NT (version 4, sp3) machines, at work, and find it very annoying to be unable to change the file permissions of files from NT on the Suns. Is there any way to change the permissions from NT file explorer or otherwise ? Dave Kirkby

Socket option IPTOS_LOWDELAY no longer works
Hi, The 'socket options' option IPTOS_LOWDELAY no longer works in 2.0.2. I had this parameter set in 1.9.18p10 however now when a samba process is started a warning of 'Unknown socket option IPTOS_LOWDELAY' is displayed. The man for smb.conf states the following: You may find that on some systems Samba will say "Unknown socket option"

NT & Win98 slow copies
Howdy all: For those who are curious (eg, Peter de Groot <pdgtech@wantree.com.au>) here are the (I think) relevant posts from recent samba digests concerning win98 and or NT performance problems copying files between local drives and samba shares. It looks like there should be some new options to play with in the next samba release. Could Jeremy or Andrew confirm? (BTW, nice

Slowdown when copying large files (PR#8617)
> Further to my previous post, I have made an interesting discovery. This > particular slowdown only occurs from clients that are running > Windows 98. The Windows98 explorer (and possibly other programs) incorrectly set the "sync" bit in write requests to network shares. This causes an enormous slowdown as Samba (quite correctly) does a fsync() on the file after each write.

Mounting folders with spaces in their names
I still have not been able to mount a folder called New Stuff in smbfs. I have tried: mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/New Stuff mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/New_Stuff mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/new_stuff Nothing seems to work. [patch] user@host in AllowUsers
This is a port of a patch I contributed to ssh 1.2.23 in May 1998. I have missed the functionality after moving to OpenSSH so I have updated the patch and hope OpenSSH might accept it. The patch allows sshd_config to have lines like: AllowUsers root at localhost AllowUsers tridge@* AllowUsers guest at 192.168.2.* DenyUsers badguy@* etc. I found this useful for restricting users to only login

rsync over ssh - lockups with pipe()
For a couple of years people have been reporting intermittent problems with rsync over ssh freezing during a large transfer (typically several GB). I have now gotten to the bottom of these problems, and have written a small test program which demonstrates a deadlock in sshd when doing large bi-directional transfers. Luckily the problem is easily solved by modifying sshd to use socketpair() instead

Samba4 reaches the "Susan" stage
Samba4 reached an important milestone tonight, as I installed it for my wife to use as her file server for all of her important documents, email, the book she is working on etc. Those of you who have been around Samba development for a while will know that my wife tends to be the first test user of major new versions of Samba, and she volunteered again this time. Susan played a large part in the
