starting daemon from ssh
This may seem odd, but I'm trying to start rsync in daemon mode from an
ssh connection... ie, something like this:
ssh host1 /usr/bin/rsync --daemon --port=9999 --config=/path/to/config.txt
the reason why is i need to start it on 40 machines and manually logging
into each one is a pain. even with copying and pasting. i'd rather
just write a shell script to do it in a loop.
anyway

need rsync.conf exclude example
on the client i am running the following command:
rsync -Cav --exclude=templates_c --port=8738 GNE_FRAMEWORK gamespot_5
c14-gs-ww1::nfs/gamespot
on the server i have the following module declaration:
[nfs]
path = /nfs/htdocs
read only = no
use chroot = no
exclude = gamespot_5/promos/ gamespot_5/misc/
obviously my intent is to prevent the "promos" and "misc" subdirectories

newbie q: mime type?
ok this has to be FAQ #1 but it's not in my FAQ file...
how do i get it so going to my server (http://pretension.com:8000/) starts
an mp3 player streaming instead of opening up a 51M download window?
anybody got a nice site with lots of fancy stuff like playlists and
such? i want to look at it to get some ideas... i'd like a log of what
was played. this has to be fairly basic

long time. i would like

Creating intermediate directories?
Forgive me if this is a FAQ, but Google hasn't helped me find what I
want to know.
If I have a local file at:
/some/local/path/file.zip
And I want it to arrive on the remote machine at:
/other/foreign/directory/file.zip
But only /other exists, is there any way to have rsync create the
intermediate directories? I know that if I have
/foreign/directory/file.zip locally I can rsync

Extremely slow on certain files
I'm trying to rsync a large data set (approx 140K files, 4TB) between machines
directly connected on gigabit ethernet.
Normally it runs around 20MB/sec, which is acceptable.
However, it seems like there is one particular file that is giving rsync
heartburn... whenever it encounters this file, the speed drops down to 150KB/sec
speed within a few seconds. I don't know what's so

Samba shares accessible from Win98 but not WinNT
The subject line says it all really. I'm running Samba 2.0.4.b on FreeBSD,
sharing a tree as I normally do (we use samba on about a dozen machines so
I'm reasonably familiar with it). This one particular machine is not
accessible from Windows NT Workstation 4.0 clients. It works fine for
Windows 95 and Windows 98 clients.
The machine does not show up in the Network Neighborhood for

Cannot log in to domain
Hi folks,
Just yesterday, my Samba installation on OpenSlug suddenly stopped
working, out of the blue. Now, users on my WinXP SP2 systems cannot
under any circumstances log in to the domain. Local Windows users
however can map shares with no problem.
When a domain user attempts to log on to a domain member PC (joining
the domain works fine, by the way), they are denied with the generic

RPC error, Samba2.0.5 and NT
Hi,
I've got the following problem:
I'm running Samba 2.0.5 on SUSE Linux 6.1 as fileserver in a network with 5
clients with Win NT SP5.
It worked all fine untill I put one more share to my smb.conf.
Now I had 9 shares instead of 8. When I now tried to browse the shares from
NT via the Explorer or
on the Shell via 'net view \\czwserv' I got a error telling me that a

Bizarre failure of samba shares to XP
OK, this one is really strange, and I'm not sure where to go with it. Here's the setup ...
Main box is running Debian testing/sarge with samba 3.0.5. Earlier it was 3.0.4 and 3.0.2. Very generic installation for home, acting as a file server for several XP Pro boxes, and everything has been running swimmingly. Using USER security, with users logging in to the XP boxes with the same ID

BIZARRE results from wilcox.test()
I get these BIZARRE results from wilcox.test()
When INCREASING the number of samples i get INCREASED p-values. When
increasing the number of samples further, the p-values goes down again. This
seems really bizarre!
Can anyone explain why this is so?!
Example:
> w <- wilcox.test(c(1:40),(c(1:40)+100))
> w$p.value

NT sends empty username to 3.0a21
Hi,
I have samba 3.0a21 running and NT 4.0 WS clients.
All workstations were previously in Samba 2.2 domain , so now I upgraded to samba 3.0a22 and
just changed domain name (workstation = XXX) and rejoined workstations by changing domain name
in every WS.
To look at the log it seems like NT WS sends empty username?

Cannot access nt shares after a few minutes
Hi,
I´ running samba 2.0.5a and Linux 2.2.5. After smbmount sucessfully mounted my
four nt-shares it lost the connection after 15 or more minutes. I´ve no idea
why. The log reads
smb_retry: signal failed: error=-3
I can remount all shares every 5 minutes but this doesn´t seem to be a good
solution.
Anyone who has a fix for this?

RPC client on unix, server on NT
I'm writing a secure RPC Server for NT, and I'd like to write a
UNIX client. How can I have the UNIX client authenticate to
the NT server (which uses LAN Manager/SMB)?
Thanks,
