Complex question concerning samba/networks
OK, here is the situation. I have a total of 7 machines all on a LAN
(two are W95) 5 are Linux RH6.1/Samba 2.0.6. One of the machines
is a guest machine with an ip of 192.168.0.9 the rest are all on
192.168.1.X. I have run samba for a long time and thought I knew
what I am doing. The machine with the separate IP address will
not show up on the Network Neighborhood no matter what I do.
I can

Samba and DOS
Greetings,
Is there any way to get Samba to interact with MS-DOS? I am
attempting to turn a Linux box into a VPN router for DOS clients. What I
need to know is, can I get a CIFS protocol stack for MS-DOS, is a TCP/IP
stack sufficient, are there any other solutions anyone knows about?
Thank You.

Authentication failure (next try)
1.) I have 4 Samba servers 2 run 2.0.6 (rpm binaries) 1 runs 2.0.7Pre2
and one runs tng-alpha.011.
Here is the error message:
Jan 1 11:00:57 fire PAM_pwdb[883]: authentication failure; (uid=0) -> sandra for samba service
(two clients, W95a, all users have matching passwords and accounts on all
servers). I am not running smbpasswd or usermaps.
The above pam error shows up but the user gets

Configuration woes corrected
Well after I tried it the ./configure on all machines ( 4 total)
I ran a few other compiles of other programs and figured out
what was missing. Evidently the RH62 kernel "forgets" to
put a symlink from /usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386 --> asm.
I put that in and presto ./configure creates the Makefile
and I am compiling 2.0.7Pre2 as we speak.
What keyed this was trying a kernel compile,

How to backup from Win to Linux using smb

I submitted this one to the mailing list awhile back, but I've made some
improvements, so here it is again.
We have cron run a script every night that backs up all the systems (Win and
Unix) to a single tape. Naturally, the tape capacity needs to be large enough
for all the systems involved.

Perhaps trivial problem but important to me
I have two computers: CentOS 7 (KDE 4) and CentOS 8 (KDE 5). I'm also
an avid Doom player (yeah, I'm an old geezer). On C7 using prboom v
2.5.0 and a graphical interface I wrote to select a wad file to play
without using the command line, everything works fine. On C8, using
the same prboom 2.5.0, graphical interface, and the same SDL
libraries, the video is "jerky" - every 2

Rsync Permission Issues
Hi all,
I'm new to rsync and have a problem I cannot resolve even after
plowing through the lists.
I have an rsync server setup with an rsync client. I am trying to
backup a directory structure that is over four levels deep. Rsync does
great until it hits that fourth level. Then it errors out for each
file in that fourth level similar to this:
rsync: recv_generator: mkdir

swat error
I am getting the following error when trying to connect to

500 Server Error
chdir failed - the server is not configured correctly
Are there any known fixes for this ?
Also:
I noticed that some of the directives, such as datadir, might be
non-functional or ignored elsewhere in coding of swat
Could this be the cause of the above errors ?
Finally here is the cli output

Success - Rails, FastCGI, and IIS / Windows Server
About 17:00 localtime I managed to get fastcgi,
Rails and IIS all happy together.
Upon success I ripped off my clothes and ran through
the village yelling "The future is now!". A PDP-11
geezer stuck his head out a window and said "The future
isn''t what it used to be and keep yer shirt on".
Modifications were required to dispatch.fcgi and request.rb.

problem creating a systemd service
Hello!
Icecast behaves oddly for me in debian testing, somehow the permissions
on my log file directory was set to root:adm if I remember things right.
Also there was no systemd service starting when I tried to start from
/etc/init.d,
somehow init services refer to systemd services nowadays whether they exist
or not.
I tried to create a systemd service looking like this:

share printing with Win95C (OSR3)?
I'm working on a samba server on a DG/UX (that's Data General, not
Digital) system.
We have 95A, 95B, 98 and NT clients all printing to the printers fine.
The security is share and all the printers are setup properly and printing from
clients using these versions of windows. All machines are network-wise, setup
the same.
I applied the patches that were listed in

Sv: R-beta: windows and dynload. ?Win98
It does, at least for a while. But when various more or less well behaved programs enter the scene (harddisk) things changed, at least for me. Reinstallation of R or windows didn't help, and I did not want to start again from scratch with a reformat. I used rw0613.

ext3-0.0.5c released
Hi all,
ext3-0.0.5c is now up at:
ftp.uk.linux.org:/pub/linux/sct/fs/jfs/
and ftp.*.kernel.org:/pub/linux/kernel/people/sct/ext3/
The most important part of this release is the e2fsprogs: e2fsck now
supports the journal changes for metadata-only journaling.
Ted, I've changed around the use of jfs* include files in e2fsprogs
quite heavily here. In each build directory --- the lib/ext2fs

RE: summaries (was: SUMMARY: "elementary sapply question")
Ajay,
thank you very much for picking up that age-old habit of
posting summaries.
It existed years ago on s-help and I find it is still a great
thing: I would not have bothered to read your original question
nor the answers you got, but I did read the summary -- and I
learned something quite interesting!
Maybe some others who receive multiple non-elementary answers to their

Dumb question (because I used to know the answer)
Good morning,
I am trying to build nut 2.1, and having a problem with autoreconf. I know I
had this problem a while back, and resolved it, but for the life of me I
can't remember how, and I can't find the info that must have led me in the
right direction.
I reloaded the PC today, and now when I run autoreconf I get the following
output:

reshape question
I am a relative R newbie and I am having trouble with reshape() on R
V1.9.1 on Linux. The same code appears to be ok when run on R V2.2.0 on
Windows and a V2.1 on Linux. Any help would be great as I need to stay
on V1.9 for the immediate future... Thanks, Reid Hutchins
