External vfat devices show uppercase filenames, how to change defaults for GNOME desktop?
Hello there! I've recently switched from Fedora 11 to CentOS6. Now my SD cards (automatically mounted on plug) contents is displayed as UPPERCASE filenames. I well see in mount's man that vfat's shortname option can be set to either lower, win95, winnt, mixed. OK, that's for entries in /etc/fstab or when mounting manually. I'd like to change the defaults for devices that

Accents in filenames on vfat filesystem
Hello. I am trying to create a text file that contains an accent like '?' in it's filename on a vfat filesystem. This generates an error like the following: "test?.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing I have made a 'modprobe nls_cp850' and 'modprobe nls_iso8859-1' to load those needed modules. Then I mounted my FAT32 partition like this: mount -t

Iomega Zip 100 Problems with "New" ATA
I believe that I'm having some problems with a Zip 100 drive and the "new" (not really so new anymore) ATA driver. I added a Zip and a new CD-R device to a system over the weekend. The BIOS identifies all of the new devices just fine, but when I boot FreeBSD (the only OS on the system), I get to the ATA probes and things lockup (these are from notes, not exact), ad2: READ command

Command ls blocked on usbdrive
Hi. In the /etc/fstab I have the next line for an usbdrive (IOMEGA USB 2.0 80 Gb): /dev/sda1 /media/IOMEGA_HDD vfat pamconsole, exec, noauto, managed 0 0 I mounted the usbdrive with mount /media/IOMEGA_HDD. If I executed an ls command for one of the directories on the usbdrive (ls /media/IOMEGA_HDD) there is not problem but if I executed an ls of the usbdrive ls -lha

Limit dirs/filenames to old 8.3 DOS convention
Hello all, after endless searching for days you might be able to help. In short: Is there a way to get Samba accept only 8.3 filenames and directory names on a share? The problem: From a windows client a user should be able to save files on a destination (samba share) which aren't longer than the old 8.3 dos convention. This is a requirement for a system behind it, which can only deal

USB DIsk and mount point
Hello. I use Centos 4.1 When I inserted my usb 2.0 disk for the first time it created the mount point /media/usbdisk just fine. Which I used to mount the disk. But as soon as I used it in another computer (winxp) when I took the usb back to centos the mount point had become /media/IOMEGA (yeah it's an iomega driver) but then as time goes by, the mount point every time the disk is used

PATCH: option to ignore case in filenames
I have two DOS filesystems mounted on Linux as "vfat" which I want to rsync. (They are on flash cards, so that they are also small). rsync gets tricked because the filesystem treats names differing in only case as the same. Thus, when it tries to sync "FOO123" with "foO123", it copies over the "new" file, and then renames it over the old one (which it

wine: /intended/PREFIXdirectory/not owned by you
I am attempting to create a folder for my wineprefixes on my external hard disk. The plan is to symlink to that location from inside my user folder (ie. ~/.wine/PREFIXES -> $iomega/.wineprefixes) For reference: $iomega=/media/Iomega_HDD This is a 400GB external drive with a single NTFS partition. The plan is to create folders for all my WINEPREFIXes at $iomega/.wineprefixes (Example:

inconsistent long filename saving problem
Ok, I am having a strange problem. Via my linux box I am sharing several vfat partitions and removable media(zip drive). They all have the same filename, case, etc. options but when the clients try to move files with windows explorer to the zip disk the client machine complains that the drive does not accept long filenames and asks for an alternative. The odd thing is the drive shows long

BTW. using HP/UX 11.00

File_column fails with uppercase extentions
I think this might be a Mac OS X only bug. Mac OS X stores filenames case sensitively but compares filenames without case sensitivity. same file: script/../config/../public/document/thumbnail/tmp/1137259310.479525.806/barcelona.JPG and script/../config/../public/document/thumbnail/tmp/1137259310.479525.806/barcelona.jpg /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/fileutils.rb:846:in `fu_each_src_dest''

Write to USB pendrives horribly slow
Hello there, since I installed CentOS6 few months ago (kept up-to-date using yum), I'm facing very poor performances when writing to USB pendrives. The hardware: a Dell Latitude E6500 laptop (Intel Core Duo P8600 @2.40Ghz), 4Go RAM + 4Go swap, several USB2 pendrives of various brands (less than old, all formatted as vfat). When I perform a copy (with cp or midnight commander, copying big
