Passwords in plain text
WRT mailing the password in clear text .. how else would it mail it? Mailman does not store any kind of encryption keys for email, and frankly, most people don't know how to use encrypted email. This list probably has a (much) higher percentage of people who would know how to use encrypted mail (ie, Linux users .. who are more computer literate than the average person). But, I don't

Ah I see. That said, this email wasn't a password reminder. It was a "your membership has been disabled" email. Veto files option not working
We're getting very close now to having our RH6.1 server as we want it. Just a few anoying things left to iron out so we can trial it properly prior to going live. One of them is the "veto files" option in smb.conf. We want to stop users on Win95 clients from seeing (or deleting) the dot-files in their home shares. I've tried the above option, I've tried "hide dot

Corrupted Excel files, oplock_break(905) errors
Hi there everyone! I'm using Samba 2.0.5a-19990721 on a RedHat 6.0 machine with Linux kernel 2.2.12. My system generally works fine, however recently I've had some complaints about some files being corrupted. The latest and best-handled to enable a debugging happened at around the same time. Both clients were using Windows95 OSR2 machines with Excel 97 SP-2. Two users reported the problem

samba 2.05 with RH6.1 and Win98
Hello, I had samba working fine with RH6.0 but now I cannot get it to work... I cannot even see the SAMBA machine in my network neighbor hood. TCP/IP connectivity is fine... Has something changed in this version?? Why does the smb.conf now have 'server string' instead of 'netbios name'??? I have attached smb.conf and smb thanks Ken -------------- next part --------------

Trouble migrating from plain text to encrypted passwords
Hi, I'm looking for some help to migrate from plain text to encrypted passwords. I'm using smbpasswd for authentication on a FreeBSD 4.9 server with samba 2.2.8. When we set up our server, we had Win95 clients with plain text passwords. As we introduced Win98 clients, we just kept with the plain text passwords. Now we are looking at XP clients and enctrypted passwords. My understanding

some win machines see samba, some not.
Hello, I have this big problem which bothers me for past week(s). I have setup a simple samba network on win95 only net and it worked fine. This time I try to setup a samba on a network having win98 WinNT 4.0 sp4 and WinNT4.0 WS SP 5. I believe all machines are on the same local net. I have tried both samba 2.0.5a (RH6.1 default) as well as samba 2.0.7. I can use 'smbclient'

[Bridge] Sniffing a linux bridge vs sniffing enslaved interfaces
I can think of several potential differences. ?You may miss any bridge specific traffic (STP, LLDP) using the interfaces generated by the bridge itself. If you have vlan tagged sub interfaces you might also miss that traffic if you were snooping a particular interface. Obviously you will miss any on-wire broadcast traffic specific to the layer1 connection a particular interface was connected to

smbmount questions
Howdy all: I'm trying to use smbmount to mount a win9x share and copy some files for backup, eventually to run as a script invoked via cron. I have RH6.1/samba 2.0.5a, and the windoze box is win95b. If I do the standard mount (smbmount //winbox/backup /mnt/smb04) I have to be root. Also, after it's mounted, I can't create any files there as a normal user (even though the

Samba writing speed with big blocks
Hello ! I'm having serious problems with Samba's writing speed (both 2.0.5a from RH 6.1 and 2.0.6 compiled from sources) on a 100Mbit network. If I write a file with block size 65487 or less, then the writing speed is about 7-8 MB/s - a very nice value, my bow to the Samba team :) If I change the block size to 65488 or more, then the writing speed falls down to 3 MB/s, which is not what

*** BUG? ***
Hi! I've installed RedHat 6.1 on a Pentium 233. I'm using samba 2.0.5a which came with RH6.1. On another PC (Pentiun-II 400) I've installed Windows NT 4.0. These two PC's are connected to the same network. I've configured Samba to share the home directories on the Linux System. I'm able to reach my own homedir from NT. Within NT I've assigned this share to drive L.

Win98 command line vs. long filenames
I just cranked up Samba 2.0.6 on NetBSD-sun3 1.4. The clients are Windows 98 (non-SE). I have had experience with earlier versions of Samba, so I was able to get 2.0.6 up and running without great difficulty. I exported a directory and was able to mount it on my Win98 machines fine. Using Explorer, everything looked like I expected it to: files were listed with their full names and I was able

Win98 SE -- cannot read files (timeouts?)
I am trying to connect a Win98 SE (second edition) client to a Samba host. I am able to map the network drives, list directory contents and the like. However, when I try to actually access a file from the host, windows hangs for a while and then gives up (with a message like: resource no longer available). The samba logs say something like: connection reset by peer. The samba host is Redhat

Netlogon Not Executed on Win98 Client
Greetings, I have configured Samba 2.0.5a as the master domain controller in a Samba server / Win98 client configuration (no NT anywhere) and most everything works great. Users are authenticated and shares are browsable. I configured the [netlogon] share using the example from the Blair book. Right out of the block it worked like a champ. However, at some point the netlogon.bat stopped being

Problems with a Win98 client attached to a Linux samba server via ISDN-PPP
Hi! Just today, I managed to attach my Win98 client at home to my remote network which is controlled by a Linux samba 2.0.5a server. The TCP/IP connection is working just fine, I'm able to access all services like ftp, telnet, ... The Win98 client is connected to the network using the DialUp-Network. The option "log on to remote network" is activated and as far as I can conclude

Safe and stable??
Have been running Samba 2.0.6 on a RH6.1 box kernel 2.2.14 for two months now. It is the PDC and storage for documents. It is running on a 10Mb/s local network with 4 Win98 machines. So far there have been no glitches - I have kept to the defaults (just about). I am now thinking of moving a 'mission critical' shared database (currently on one of the Win98 machines) onto the share on
