Samba, NT, and transient network failures
We've recently completed an internal eval of products to server Unix
filesystems from our Unix fileservers to our NT clients via SMB.
We evaluated two products, one of them was Samba 1.9.18pl10, the other
was a commercial product.
We've selected Samba. We had been using the commercial product for some
time.
All is great, fine, dandy.
But, as a result of our experience with the

Change Ruby on Rails' reserved words?
Hi,
One of my database tables has to have the same name as a reserved word
in Ruby on Rails. Is there a way to change the name of a Ruby on Rails
reserved word by overloading it or by some other means? I really do
not want to change my table name. Thank you.

User's smbd processes don't get killed
Hi, all.
Last saturday, we've done a cutover for Samba 2.0.5a to be our new
fileserver. All is going well, except for two network users that make me
reboot the server.
What happens is as follows:
* user logs on onto samba server;
* user opens and closes files, etc, OK until in one of these
operations his/her machine hangs;
* user reboots his/her machine to log on again. In this

SOLVED: Samba + e2compr + Linux == problems
Semms that I've confirmed that all of my problems with Samba arised
because of e2compr. After describing my problem to Alan, I've done what I
proposed myself last saturday: I've turned off compression in my home
directory and tried to save the file several times without modifications,
exactly in the same way I've done to reproduce the problem.
Et voil?! I could save the file

Samba + e2compr = problems?
Hello, everybody.
Casually I've got the chanceto reproduce at my workstation the
problem that prevented us to change from Novell 4.11 to Samba on RH6.0.
AFAIK, the problem is loosely related to the one described in these lists
where one get a bunch of smbd daemons running, while certain files remain
locked and can be only unlocked by means of a reboot of the system.
I could verify details

Getting RH6.0/Samba 2.0.5a to join NT domain
I've used exactly that combination, and the domain join worked without a hitch.
I had to go in as NT domain admin and create a server/workstation entry in
Server Manager first, of course.

Samba/RH6.0 file locking problems?
I hope that someone can help me with this because I'm at a loss.
I have a Samba server running RH 5.2 w/all errata plus Samba 2.03 that is
used, among other things, to serve a share for a Windows program called
"Business Works" which is a network accounting package. This program uses
the standard Windows range-locking to implement it's network capability.
I have been using this

Problem with samba under RH6.0 dropping data
I just upgraded my server from RH5 to RH6. I am seeing two problems
that may be related.
1. When I do an smbtar I get errors on some of the files:
My command line:
# smbtar -v -s schroon -x "D$" -d gt -p z -u backup -t /usr/tmp/a.tar
The error message:
Error reading file \gt\STk-dist\Demos\Html-Demos\Images\backward.gif.
Got 0 bytes
Didn't get entire file. size=714, nread=0

RH6.0/Samba Oplock Problems (and fix)
To any one who is using Red Hat Linux 6.0 (or, presumably, any glibc2.1
system)
I recently installed a new RH 6.0 system on Intel. After installing my
samba and my network application I noticed that I was experiencing oplock
problems that were not present with the same version of Samba on my RH 5.2
systems and caused my application to not function. Since the problem
seems to be with oplocks I

segfault on Sparc Linux (RH6.0)
We are having problems building R on Red Hat Linux 6.0/Sparc.
R compiles with no problem but then it fails "make tests".
Specifically, the line
eigen(cbind(-1,c(1:2,0),0:2)) # complex values
causes a segmentation fault. Previous versions of Red Hat Linux
did not give this problem.
The eigen() function is one of the rare cases in the base library where
Fortran code is called via the

Xten - Free windows SIP client
Same here Michael and the PocketPC version seems unaudible with any codec; early days trying that though.

Need a recommendation on a good motherboard/processor combination
I need a recommendation on a good motherboard/processor combination. I
would like a motherboard that has lots of PCI slots and works well with
Asterisk without problems getting drivers working, etc. Onboard LAN
would be nice to keep from using a slot. Plan to use RedHat 8 for the
OS.
Please provide your input as soon as possible. I need to build a demo
box with 2 ports FXO and use the new

RE: [Asterisk] How to select server ardware?
Hi Chris,
I know this is quite an old email, but I was browsing through the archive :)
I am currently working on "embedding" asterisk in one of Allwell's STB's.
The idea is more or less exactly like yours. The STB will be solid-state
and contain OS, Asterisk, Basic configuration and voice files on a flash
disk. It will boot up and get a network share via DHCP. This network
