Name Resolve Order?
I am a little confused. In the smb.conf man page under the "name resolve order" section, it states that setting "name resolve order = wins" will be ignored if the "wins server" parameter is not set. Elsewhere in the man page it states that if you set "wins support = yes" then you cannot set the wins server parameter. Does this mean that a machine that is

Is 2.2.3/4 as reliable as 2.0.10?
I've been using 2.0.x on my servers for a couple of years & am a very, very happy customer (thanks Samba team). There are only 2, albiet small, annoyances. 1) Any account administration results in changes having to be made on both the NT domain & linux server. 2) I can't do permissions for a "group of groups" on the linux server. It seems that winbind might be able to

Has anyone seen this before?
I'm using samba and cups to allow NT/2k machines to print to an HP LaserJet 4000N printer. The printer works fine except for one in house program. In this one program, all the horizontal lines that should be printed are missing. Originally I thought this was a driver problem, but today, for no apparent reason, it started printing the horizontal lines... but only for the first page of each

[Off Topic] Managed desktop virus scanner in Samba 3 Enviroment
Hi, As we are moving away from an NT based enviroment to SAMBA we are looking for a managed virus scanner for our desktops. Managed means: 1. Remote deployment 2. Updates from a local repository 3. Notification and reporting. The existing solutions (Symantec, TrendMicro, Mcafee) assume that you have an NT server. I would much rather have a Linux/Samba based managment console. Any ideas/leads?

samba-vscan-clamav on access virus scanner for Samba
Hello Listers, Don't know what everyone is using for virus scanning on your school's windersz boxes. Just thought this may be of interest to some people here. I set up a few weeks ago, on our Samba file server for all students and staff at school samba-vscan-clamav. I guess i shouldn't blow about it yet, but with quite a bit of testing by yours truly, this really works slick as a real

Virus Scanner
Hello Listers, does anyone know about virus scanners working on Unix hosts but scanning for all those bad vermin from the M$ world. Best solution (for me) would be a tight coupling with samba, monitoring the I/O as some PC scanners do. Any suggestions? TIA, -- Detlef ////

Re: VFS Virus Scanner idea...
Chris; I am not personally aware of any open source solutions for server based virus protection and detection on LINUX, but I have used a commercial product from Trend called Server Protect. More information on it is available at http://www.trendmicro.com/products/splinux/ Additionally, their Interscan Virus Wall is an excellent product for scanning E-Mail, Proxy Traffic, and FTP Traffic

Microsoft Mail
Has anyone managed to get a working emulation of Microsoft Mail working on Samba? A number of administrators still use schedule+ via Microsoft Mail to keep room and individual schedules. I'm trying to retire an NT machine and its last function is the Microsoft Mail. Any input would be greatly appreciated. -- David Hamilton Service Manager Business Computer Services Business Administration

Login script for Win95 machines
On my Samba server I created a directory called 'netlogon' and I put a batch file in there called 'login.bat'. Also did I create a share called 'netlogon' which points to the 'netlogon' directory. I set up samba to use a login script (login script=netlogon/login.bat). Strange enough it does not seem to be executed when Win95 clients logon. If I double-click the

Scanning a document through scanner using ROR

Actual requirement is the user scans a document(containing 10 to 100 pages) in his client machine(here the whole document should be in one file like pdf or tif, not individual files) and the preview the document to be shown for

Realtime virus scanning
Hi guys, I just came across an interesting question. Is there a way to do realtime virus scanning on samba 3.4.7 on ubuntu 10.04. I have found "scannedonly [1]" and "vscan [2]", but neither of them is in the repositories meaning we will have to package them our selfs which will become administrative nightmare. Right now I am looking into inotify + clamAV, but before I start

Johnny's postfix/dovecot/squirrelmail/virus scanning + Centos4 Walk Through...
Is anyone mirroring Johnny's write up on this? As fate would have it, I've finally got some time to sit down and configure a spare box to be my new mail server and Johnny's site has been defaced again. :-( Sigh....I even checked to make sure it was up this morning, drove to the office so I could do everything from the terminal and my handy dandy roadmap is gone.... Any pointers
