DBase File locking issues
Hi All,
I am experiencing issues with the use of DBase files on a Samba 2.0.5a
share, that appear to be due to locking problems. Basically, I have
test programs for both DOS and Win32 that does nothing but append
records to a DBase database (DBF/MDX files). If more than one client
PC is appending to this file, data loss occurs. I get random data
loss, with records lost, and index file

Login Scripts

Hi Everybody,
I would like to run a login script that maps out the different shares
on a RH 6.1 server running SAMBA 2.06. I have several Win98 and NT
workstation clients that log into an NT domain and use my server for
file and print services. The Samba server is not part of the domain.
The clients currently have access to a share common to us

More Info: Mac permission problems after Debian update
There seems to be a few people having this problem, but not much response.
I've dug into the logs, and while I don't know exactly what I am looking
at, I think I may have found something that may make sense to someone.
A short recap. Samba was working fine, until I did a Debian security
update, which upgraded my Samba to 2.2.8a. Now, I can create files on a
mounted Samba share in a

Upgrade broke file locking
Prior to upgrading from RH7.0 to RH7.3 our Samba filserver worked perfectly.
Now we are having locking problems. Initially Iused the same samba binaries
built on RH70, I tried rebuilding Samba and reinstalling but it had no effect.
If user bon opens an M$-Office file they frequently get a 'file is already in
use by bob'. Sure enough smbstatus -L shows the file locked by bob, but bob

... (dotMethods) and cbind/rbind: how to give the signature?
Dear List,
I'm struggling with the signature writing cbind/rbind functions for a S4
class.
First of all, I'm very happy that it is now possible to dispatch on ...
I follow the example for "paste" in ?dotMethods, which works as far as this:

Index Corruption xBase database
Hello,
I've been working with a xBase database (similar to dBase) in a multiuser
application. There are like 40 users working on the database on the same
time reading and like 10 writing information.
Sometimes the CDX files (Index Files) get corrupted and is it's necessary
to pack the tables (rebuild the indexes).
I have notice using the smbstatus -B command the following

DBase File locking
FWIW, i had the same problem (obtaining a byte-range lock with an offset of
0xeffffff0..0xefffffff) quite some time ago causing dBase IV on DOS machines
with VLM clients to a mars_nwe server to fail to synchronize. The solution
was probably the same as here, to fold this range into 0x7ffffffx.

locking problems with samba 2.2.1a
Hello all,
I have a samba 2.2.1a server running as the PDC of my
network on a Mandrake 8.0 system with a reiserFS
partition. I am serving for the win98 clients a small DOS
clipper program with a DBF database. The programs run
well on the workstations when there is only one user
using it, when another user try to use the same program
it starts to get very slow. I think this is a lock

How important are oplocks?
Hello,
I'm wondering just how critical it really is to turn off oplocks. It appears
that not only Windows 2k server, but also Netware 5 and above defaults to
having these enabled.
I just spoke with two software companies running databases off of file servers
(no database server, just MDAC stuff), and they had never heard of it, much
less require it to be disabled. Everything I've

file locking with win apps
Hello there,
I have a serious file locking problem with samba on a RH6 based Linux
machine.

is, only one client can access these - and even only one client can
initialize the database query engine, which is btrieve 6.15 workstation

The same problem affects .doc files. If one client has an open document,

I'm running samba 2.0.7 on Solaris 2.6. We've have terrific success for well over a year with samba until about a week ago I started receiving reports that users could not open MS Office docs saved on a samba share. The samba logs are full of information about oplocks like this:

Migrating from a legacy Dbase app
All,
My company uses Goldmine as its contact/sales opportunity manager.
(Uses Dbase for it''s DB).
I''m trying to get a Rails app to implement the parts of it we actually use.
I''ve been building my Rails app in MySQL. Now I''m need to start
getting data from Goldmine into my Rails app.
What''s the recommended approach?
A one time transfer of data?

FOX PRO 2.6 on SMB
Hello list
We have some Fox Pro apps shared on Samba server (I know FOX sucks) and
sometimes we need to recreate indexes, and we have to call all the users
and ask them to close their programs.
If we kill the user's smb process we got corrupted indexes...
here's the question : is there any way to force the used files by an smb
user process to close avoiding corruption, or perhaps make

Need to react to row additions in dbase table
Hello,
I need my rails app to react to row additions on table in the dbase. Is
there an elegant way to handle this in rails? Essentially I am treating
the table as a sort of queue from which I pull items and process, one at
a time.
Thanks,
Doug
