Connecting to Samba from 95/98
When the world was young, Wong Hoong Shen <hswong@ecquaria.com> carved some runes like this: > I don't know if this was discussed ad finitum but I can't seem > to find an answer in the archive or FAQ. I need to connect to a > Samba server using an account even from machines which use 95/98. > For NT, there is no problem because I can specify the user, but > 95/98

Windows 98 user level sharing
I've been going thru conniptions trying to set a Windows 98 client for user level access. I think part of the problem is I have insufficient info, in spite of reading everything I can get my hands on. My server is RH 6.0 with Samba 2.0.5a compiled from samba.org source in the default configuration. I have it set up as a working W9x login server, with workgroup= being the same workgroup as the

nbtstat doesn't show MAC address for samba servers
On Win9x I issue the command: nbtstat -a <netbios name> If <netbios name> is a Win9x machine I got the MAC address of that machine on the last line of the command output. If it's a samba server the MAC address is not returned: MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00 Is there anyone who gest the MAC address back from a samba server? -- giulioo@tiscalinet.it

problems running samba on Caldera 2.3?
I have the default installation of samba (2.0.5) that came with Caldera OL 2.3, but it doesn't seem to be starting up properly, nor is SWAT working. When I run the script 'samba start', I get the message "Starting samba: smbd nmbd", but when I check the running processes, only nmbd shows up. Running smbstatus gives me the message "Couldn't open status file

2.0.4b: logrotate problems with rh60
The 2.04b rpm for rh60 ships with and installs a config file for logrotate (the samba.log file in the packaging/RedHat section). ===== /var/log/samba/log.nmb { postrotate /usr/bin/killall -HUP nmbd endrotate } /var/log/samba/log.smb { postrotate /usr/bin/killall -HUP smbd endrotate } ===== 1) I think that the use of "endrotate" is wrong. 2.0.6: HUP/charset/profiles/smbmount/logging
This is the list of problems I had with samba-2.0.6 so far. Can anyone tell me if he can reproduce them and if he considers them as problems? 2.0.6 on linux 2.2.13 or 2.0.33 1) sighup/log reopening doesn't always work: connections that are already active keep logging to the old logs; logrotate rotates/zip the logs and samba stops logging completely till restart. 2) Localized chars. [smbfs] Timing problems with kernel 2.2.x?
[Note: This has been posted to linux-kernel and was ignored. Since smbfs is maintained by the samba team, I am retrying here] Hi! To maintain and install packages from CD-ROM to my Debian/GNU Linux system, I use Debian's apt package. Since my Linux box is stowed away in a closet, I use an smbfs mount to mount the CD-ROM drive from my Windows desktop machine to the Linux box. This used to

2nd try: sync of passwd and smbpasswd
Hello, I'm using samba2.02 and shadowed passwords. I' m on the way to migrate from plaintext to encrypted passwords. Therefore I've set the parameter update encrypted to "Yes". After everyone has logged in I will set this parameter to "No" again and set encrypted passwd = Yes. So far, so good. But three questions are remaining for me: a) what to do with those who

REPEAT: hasn't anyone used smbclient linux->linux?
I cannot get smbclient or smbmount to work from linux -> linux. I'm running 2.05a on Red Hat 6.x servers. I can use NT shares from linux. I can use samba shares from NT & 95. Is there some trick to getting this to work between linux machines?

Purely numeric service name
Hi I have a problem accessing NT boxes which have a service (host) name which is purely numeric, smbclient insists on treating it as an ip number. For example:- /opt/samba/bin/smbclient \\\\06842\\BACKUP xxxxx -U xxxxx returns :- Connecting to 0.0.14.34 at port 139 Connection to 06842 failed I am using HPUX 10.2 and samba version 2.0.4b. Surely it should be possible to connect to NT

'automatic' Printer driver installation...
Hi, I've set up my smb.conf file with individual entries for the printers that I want to share out to Win95 / NT clients. I've also got 'load printers = no' specified in smb.conf, and the default 'printers' section commented out entirely. Firstly; I still get a 'Printers' system folder when brosing the linux machine from an NT client running windows explorer - is

Samba 2.0.6pre1 released
I've just released a snapshot of 2.0.6 in the alpha directory on samba.org. This is intended for testing to make sure some of the recent changes work well on a wider range of sites. I have also built a RedHat Linux 6.X RPM and put it in the same dircetory. If you are not running a mission critical site then we would appreciate feedback on this snapshot. If you have reported a bug in Samba

SAMBA config problem
We are a little stuck on this one; running /usr/sbin/smbd = version 2.05(a) from Red Hat 6.1, kernel 2.2.12-20, we can't log on to our Linux server from our W 98 boxes. We can telnet in just fine, but it won't show up in any network neighborhood on the PCs.... We're trying to get SAMBA to run on the Linux server so we can run seven W98 clients for a small law office. Nothing

winpopup
Hi, I have a linux (redhat 6.0) print server and I am running samba 2.0.3-8 serving win95 machines. I would like the print server to send a message to the win95 when a print job is completed. To do that, I run winpopup on win95. However, if win95 users close winpopup, they do not receive any message. Is there any more realiable method to communicate with win95 machines? NT and Linux printer sharing
Hi, This is my first shot at getting Samba to work for us. I have successfully setup SMB (Samba) on my Linux (RedHat6.0) in a network. I can see the linux machine from the NT4 workstation's Network Neighbourhood, and provided I give a correct password I can browse the linux / (root) tree, as I have configured it in /etc/smb.conf and all is well. But I have also setup a SMB printer on the

Samba printer queues
Hello! Is it possible to make printer queues accessable from Windows clients? That is, I've got a printer that is printed on via a Linux server running Samba, but print jobs never show up on the client-side (as far as Windows is concerned, the queue is empty). It would be nice, albeight not vital, if this worked... Thanks! -- / Peter Schuller PGP userID: 0x5584BD98 or 'Peter Schuller

Accessing a smb server at USER level
Hello! I have been using Samba for 2,5 years now. I have had the same problem since I started - I can not connect the Samba server from a W98 pc when the server security level is set to USER. So I have dropped security and use SHARE instead. I can see the share from the Window-client, but when I try to double click i get an error message saying: "Write networkpassword: , Resourse:
