smbtar question?
Hi all, I want to move a filesystem off of my NT server over to my Network Appliance NFS server to then be shared via Samba. I assume the easiest way to accomplish this would be to use smbtar. Do I then use smbtar to extract the tar file I create with smbtar, or, can I use gnutar? Does it matter? Am I safer sticking with smbtar? I'm guessing that since smbtar is a wrapper around

Restoring from an smbclient/gtar archive?
Hi all, I recently used smbtar (Samba Version 2.0.4) to create a tar file "backup" of an NT filesystem. However, when using GNU tar to extract the tar file, I get a little ways into the 'tar xvpf ../file.tar' command and get a whole bunch of errors: tar: Read error on ../file.tar: Invalid argument tar: Read error on ../file.tar: Invalid argument tar: Read error on

Amanda oddity (amcheck)
I'm slowly getting everything back to normal here after swapping motherboards on my server. I also took the opportunity to bring the server up to CentOS 5. I'm still getting services working but I have one oddity with amanda. Ever since I upgraded the server to CentOS 5, amcheck dies and gives me a backtrace if there are no available tapes. amcheck works fine if the expected next

Samba across subnets?
Hi all, I've recently set up a samba server, but just discovered that people on the "other" side can't reach it. The system shows up in Network Neighborhood, but you can't double click on it. It returns a message saying that the server is either inaccessible, or that I misspelled the name (How I did that with just one mouse click is beyond me ;) I had 'allow

Samba servers disappeared?!
Hi all, I've been running a Samba server here for over 6 months now will great success. This past weekend I moved the Samba server to a new subnet, and now I can't see any of the various aliases from Samba server. I was previously able to see the aliases in NN across my 2 different subnets by using the 'wins server = ' parameter. The wins server I was registering with is on yet

Network Neighborhood comment fields and Samba
Hi all, I'm using Samba 1.9.18p8 under Solaris 2.5.1. Within my smb.conf file I am using the 'netbios aliases' option to make my server appear as 4 different servers with an smb.conf.%L to load the specifics of each: netbios aliases = hardware software diagnostics homedirs include = /usr/local/samba/var/smb.conf.%L The problem I'm encountering is that the only comment I see

AW: Samba across subnets?
If you don't want to type the ip adress of your samba server every time you connect, add a entry to your local hosts file and lmhosts file. You will find this files (and sample files with extension ".sam") in the windows main directory of Win95 and under "system32/drivers/etc" on WinNT 4.0. Where are the older versions?
Hi, Anyone know where I can get a .tar.gz of 2.0.2? I'd like this version, since the PDC code is reportedly more stable than 2.0.3. Or has this been fixed in 2.0.3? No INSTALL file?
Hi all, Is there no INSTALL file that ships with samba? I thought there was one there at one time. Is the install procedure as simple as: ./configure [possible various options] make make install Or is there more to it than that? Thanks, -- Seeya, Paul ---- plussier@baynetworks.com Broadband Technology Division - Bay Networks (now a Nortel Company, Eh? :) If you're not having

NT Domain and Samba as a PDC
Hi all, I'm currently battling with my Corp. IS group over NT domain administration. I admin a mostly Unix environment with a lot of WinXX clients. The authentication server is owned by "Corporate" (you know, that nameless, faceless entity that always makes do stupid things because "That's the policy" :) and I have no control over it. What I'd like to do is

cron jobs fail to run
hey centos long time no hear! :) I'm having a small issue where the backup jobs that I set to run in the crontab of the backup user do not appear to be running. Here's how I set it up (with crontab -e as the backup user): run amanda every night (check at 2:45 and backup at 3) 45 2 * * * /usr/sbin/amcheck /var/log/amanda/crontab/amcheck.log * 3 * * * /usr/sbin/amdump

Dual Authentication methods?
Hi all, I have an interesting situation where I have 2 groups of users, a Unix group, and a Windows group. I want to be able to allow them all access to the same resources, but not comlicate my life too much more than it already is :) Here's the situation. I have a Samba server currently running in order to allow the Unix folks access to their home directories from their PCs. This group

W95 and encrypted passwords?
Hi all, I'm trying to play with the "not-yet-officially-supported-PDC-code" in samba-2.0.3 and running into problems with the W95 client I'm using for testing. Since the Samba server is using 'encrypted passwords=yes' my W95 system can't log in, since it's passing plain-text passwords. How do I *enable* encrypted passwords under W95? Is there a quick

NT Crashes when doing large network file Xfers (was Re: NT crashes during smbtar)
Ernie, Thanks for the great info.. Based on what you were seeing, would you suspect that part of the problem is with the combination of NT and the 3com card (3c595)? Currently, we are ONLY seeing this under NT Workstation (not server) and almost all of our machines have this same 3com 3c595 card (only if using 100BaseT).. -- Rick -----Original Message----- From: Ernie Oporto
