How to set UNIX password from PC?
System: Samba: 2.0.4b on Solaris 2.x, NIS password PCs: Windows NT Service Pack 3, with plain-text passwords. Background: There is the usual [homes] share on the UNIX samba server: users provide a UNIX (samba) identifier and password (plain), which authenticates against the NIS service on that same UNIX samba server. (So there is none of this complicated "smbpasswd" file

quotas: documentation? Properties?
System: samba 2.0.4b on Solaris 2.x Starting point: PC's "Properties" window on a share of home directories; diskspace Used/Free "pie-chart" and figures. A colleague asked me yesterday whether this properties window could display the diskspace information, using the user's UNIX quota rather than the physical space on the disk. Our environment has potentially 14,000

File permissions/ownership lost?
Samba 2.0.0 on Solaris 2.5/sparc 14,000 users (samba released to small group, but intend to release to all) My apologies if this is a FAQ: point me in the right direction! When editing a WORD document (or Excel, and probably others), the revised file written back to the UNIX home directory loses its original ownership, group-ownership and permissions (modes) and gets a default set (me, my

Usage figures
When the students arrive in a few weeks, we will have several thousand registered samba users and (we anticipate) several hundred simultaneous Samba connections. (This will be our first period of significant Samba use.) Our management folks are asking about collecting periodic Samba usage figures. This is a bit vague, but something like a rolling count of simultaneous connections, per-user

Connection hangs...
In problem-fixing, the "nicest" problems are those reproducible on demand. Alas, this one is not nice. System: Samba 2.0.6 on Solaris 2.7 (also see similar on Solaris 2.6). Symptom (user perspective): PC suddenly, spontaneously freezes and eventually the connection times out. Symptom (log file): [2000/02/15 09:27:30, 0] ../lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(474)

RC7: BUG! and patch [Was: Re: rc7 bug? [Was: deliver LDA and INBOX location] (fwd)] (fwd)
Could someone confirm, please, that this bug report and its proposed fix are being checked? 1. Is my analysis (message below) about right? 2. Is my proposed patch (attached) about right? 3. Is this being addressed for "rc8" (or whatever) and its successors? Many thanks. -- : David Lee I.T. Service : : Senior Systems Programmer

rc7 bug? [Was: deliver LDA and INBOX location] (fwd)
Anyone had any thoughts on the item below? If the problem is with my config, I'd like to be guided towards how I might resolve it. If it is a bug in rc7, it would be good to fix it, and I'd be happy to beta-test. -- : David Lee I.T. Service : : Senior Systems Programmer Computer Centre : :

Variable Names
Dear R users, That's probably a silly question even for a newbie but : Is it possible to assign variable prices as variable names ? For instance, would something like the following work : for (i in 1:4) { error.i <- some_calculation } so "error.i" variables would be created for i=1,2,3,4 i.e. error.1 error.2 error.3 etc. etc. Costas --

Console Output while running scripts
Hi, I am using 0.63.2 on Windows. I have some functions programmed to do repetitive tasks and have some print(variables) statements to check how my program is progressing but get no output on screen (console) while the program is running. I tried CTRL-W as the help says but I get no screen output before each run terminates. Probably some kind of setting needs to be predefined correctly. Any

Pivoting in chol
Hi Everyone, I have modified my version of R-1.4.1 to include choleski with pivoting (like in Splus). I thought R-core might consider including this in the next version of R, so I give below the steps required to facilitate this. 1. Copied Linpack routine "dchdc.f" into src/appl 2. Inserted line F77_SUBROUTINE(dchdc) in src/appl/ROUTINES 3. Inserted "dchdc.f" into

Thought on crossprod
Hi everyone, I do a lot of work with large variance matrices, and I like to use "crossprod" for speed and to keep everything symmetric, i.e. I often compute "crossprod(Q %*% t(A))" for "A %*% Sigma %*% t(A)", where "Sigma" decomposes as "t(Q) %*% Q". I notice in the code that "crossprod", current definition > crossprod function (x,

NA and help page for "&" and "|"
Hi everyone, Can I suggest an addition to the help page for logical AND and OR, indicating the behaviour of NA (which is currently not mentioned at all). I think something simple like an extra paragraph in Details, eg \code{NA} is a valid logical object. Where a component of \code{x} or \code{y} is \code{NA}, the result will be \code{NA} if the outcome is ambiguous. In other words \code{NA

hash argument of new.env()
Hi everyone, There is no mention in ?new.env (R-1.6.0) of what the effect of setting the hash argument of new.env() actually does. What does it mean in performance terms to say that "the environment will be hashed"? Thanks, Jonathan. -- Jonathan Rougier Science Laboratories Department of Mathematical Sciences South Road University of Durham
