Security related bug/issue ... or mis-configuration? (fwd)
As a followup to my own email...
We did some testing here today with connecting to the share from an NT
box, where we connect to \\relay\marc as marc when log'd in as a seperate
user...NT refuses to allow it.
Is there a bug with the server that, using smbclient from Linux, allows
you to connect to any share without a password? Can someone test this and
see if its a local problem or not?

3.86-pre1 gpxelinux.0 SIS900 long boot time / fails to boot / no entries in tftp server log
Okay guys, This is separate from my last few messages. Along with those
attempts, I decided to migrate from pxelinux.0 to gpxelinux.0 in my
existing setup. Admittedly I haven't tried previous gpxelinux.0's but I
am willing to if someone thinks it would be useful. Everything works as
expected with pxelinux.0 of the same version.
With gpxelinux.0:

Interdomain trusts (Bind NACK received on pipe)
I'm attempting to set up a 2-way NT4-style trust between samba 3.0.1-2
(from source rpm on redhat 7.2) and Windows 2003 running active directory.
The AD server (SANDMAN) trust of my Samba domain works fine, but when I
try to use the Samba trust of the AD server I get the following error:

Attempting to mount to a Samba share from linux.
Hello, I have a fairly large problem mounting a samba share from within
linux. The samba server, running Solaris 7 with Samba pre-2.0.7, has a
bunch of shares on it, one of which I can mount from Windows, while logged
into the ACADIA domain, but I cannot mount that share using smbmount in
linux. When I log into windows, I log in with the username 033197m and my
password. In smb.conf I have my

Does anyone have any experience with a high number of *simultaneous*
connections? We're investigating the possibility of moving one of our
servers from novell to solaris, and the only "concern" we have at this
time is what happens if 800 clients all decide to connect at the same
time?
the server will be running solaris/7 on a dual-ppro system ...

Letting users modify there own 'valid users = ' directive
Here's an odd question/request ...
Right now, if you setup smb.conf with a [homes] section, anyone can
connect and login to the server, as themselves, and mount their home
directory. No probs there.
Has anyone thought of, and possibly implemented, a means where that end
user could change things for themselves to extend permissions on their
directory?
Basically, make a Win based utility

Linux vs NT: a new test
Don't know how many ppl saw/read the following:
http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/news/0,4153,1015266,00.html
One of the comments on Slashdot was the question as to how well 4.4lite
would have done in the same tests, as they "theorize" that alot of the
problems revolve around Linux's IP stack...
Now if only we had a working MMAP, we'd be all set...

union_lookup panic ...
G'day ...
Altho it is rare, we are getting union_lookup panics on our server(s)
... as most on this list already know, we make heavy use of unionfs to
share between jails, and I already know that this is the "kernel side"
cause of the problem ... but ...
From what I can tell, though, the "trigger" for the panic is pkg_delete
... if I build a jail'd environment,

File copy error with Samba 2.2.x and 3.0/Novell/Win2k
Hello,
We're experiencing a problem with samba after an upgrade, which only occurs
when using a strange combination of software.
The problem only occurs with samba 2.2 and higher. This problem does not
occur with samba 2.0. We tested this with samba 3.0alpha17, 2.2.2,
2.2.4, and 2.0.10
First off, sticking to procedure, TESTs 1-11 as described in DIAGNOSIS.txt
succeed.

ALT_BREAK_TO... + ILO ... missing something in config ...
Due to an issue I'm having with 7.x, and trying to track it down, I spent
tonight getting my server setup to allow my to break into the debugger
when it hangs, and hopefully dump core ...
But, although I *think* I've got it all, I'm obviously missing something,
as it isn't breaking ...
First ... I'm running a proliant server, and when I connect via SSH to ILO

/etc/printcap for samba-shared printer...
Morning...
Just spent this evening getting printing setup off my FreeBSD
machine (oh, how I love Solaris at these times *groan*)...got it now so
that I can print directly from Netscape, color and graphics and all.
The printer is an HP 560c.
Now, I want to be able to print from my Windoze95 machine, and
have samba setup for that, as well as file sharing. If I setup my Windoze
machine such

Errors in /var/log/messages and "dmesg"
A friend of mine is running Samba (samba-2.0.3-8) on a couple RedHat Linux
6.0 machines. He is sharing files bilaterally at work with a WinNT
machine and at home with a Win9x machine.
In both places, he is getting a large number of SMB error messages. I'm
not sure whether these are from the smbfs (smbmount) or from the Windoze
machines accessing the Linux drives, though I suspect the

Quick questions: NTFS "ACLs"...
Hi...
I'm trying to "sell" the idea of Samba (instead of NT servers) at
work, to replace Novell servers...but am having problems figuring out how
to do something...
If I go into NT, Windows Explorer and do a properties on a file,
there is a section that allows you to set, essentially, ACLs on a
file...allow various individual users or groups of users to access the
file without

two questions: mailing list & public shares
Morning...
First off, is there a non-digest version of this list available?
Second, and more important, from reading the docs, the following
'share' should not prompt me for a password...no?
# This one is useful for people to share files
[tmp]
comment = Temporary file space
path = /tmp
read only = no
public = yes
If this is correct, then there is a problem here, since I
