Samba and Novell
WARNING Newbie question WARNING
I am attempting to get Samba up and running. It is installed on a RH5.2
box, and everything went pretty well. I can see the samba box in Win95
network neighborhood, but I can's connect to it. I am suspecting that the
Novell 4.1 box on our network is interfering. I can't seem to find a good
document on samba/novell stuff, so any assistance would be

Problem mapping drive names on Win95
Hi,
in my Office, I'm trying to replace a Novell-server by a Linux-server.
On the Novell-server, there is the SYS: volume. On this volume
is a directory named DriveT. I did a map on it, so this SYS:DriveT was
used as T: . If you link Excel sheets, which are stored on T:,
to Word documents, Word unfortunately saves the UNC path,
which is \\SERVER1\SYS\DRIVET instead of T:

Samba on RedHat 6.1
We're trying to get samba running on a RH 6.1 server installation,

workstations and not on the Windows 95 clients, and then only if we do a

to it after rebooting the NT workstation, but can't see the server in

NT domains -vs- simple workgroups????
Hi, I've been following some of the posts (never
received a reply to mine but found one similiar). I
have a question that I hope you can clarify.
Original question: I can see the server from my
Windows XP machine using network neighbors, but when I
double click on it I get: Path not found
One reply: If you're using NT domains (not simple
"workgroups")...

cross-subnet browsing
I have 2 subnets. Subnet 1 has an NT WINS server. Subnet 2 has a Samba
server acting as domain master browser and local master browser
for a workgroup.
If I view the network neighborhood from a Win 95 PC on Subnet 1
(call it PC_A), I can see all the hosts in the workgroup on both subnets.
If I view the network neighborhood from a Win 95 PC on Subnet 2
(call it PC_B), I cannot see PC_A. I

Once more into the breech (browsing problems)
Howdy all:
I thought I had this problem beaten into submission, but I guess
not. We just got our first NT box, which is another new wrinkle...
Anyway, the LAN just went belly-up again yesterday, and when the
LAN guy disconnected my linux/samba box from the network, Network
Neighborhood came right back. I still don't think it's a
linux/samba problem, but I'm certainly no

PAM authentication failure?
Howdy:
Can anybody explain why /var/log/messages is filled with the
following?
Aug 18 09:37:53 rama PAM_pwdb[28483]: 1 authentication failure;
(uid=0) -> arnold for samba service
Aug 18 09:38:25 rama PAM_pwdb[28494]: (login) session opened for

The first one happens every time I browse to rama from win95
Explorer; the second one is from a telnet login

Implementing Shares
Hi!
I am using RHL 5.2 and Samba 2.0.2. I have the SAMBA acting as the PDC
in the network where most of the clients are Win95. Earlier we had a
Novell Netware Network and I decided to shift over to Linux/Samba. I am
having trouble implementing certain shares. The exact problem is
described below:
I want ONLY 'nhs' and 'vhs' to have read only access to

Win98 and Samba
Has any tried to connect to a samba server while using Win98 beta 2 as a client?
I keep getting incorrect username/password errors in the samba log file and am unable to either map a drive or connect to a shared resource.
With debug level set to 4 on the samba serve the main error seems to be error in packet at line 129 for cmd=117 (or something like that).
If anyone else finds a fix for this,

Browsing
I am configuring Linux (2.0.33) as a local router. I am wanting to use
Samba (1.9.18p3) to "manage" the browse lists on my network so that
computers on each subnet can browse resources on the other subnets. My
local network consists of Win95 and NT40 workstations with NT40 servers.
My test configuration consists one token ring segment on one side of
the Samba box (network .192) and

Question
Is there a way to prevent other users from being able to map a drive from
windoww95/NT to anyother user directory on the system. For example I can map
to anyone's account on the system and have read only access, is there a way
to stop this in either the global or share level?
Thanks

Server disappears from Network Neighborhood
>From time to time someone will comment in this list that their Samba
server has disappeared from the list of hosts in Network Neighborhood.
Browsing the list archive has yet to turn up any good explanation of this
phenomenon.
I think I have a clue. This morning my server disappeared again. When I
checked the process list on the server I noticed that nmbd had been
swapped out to disk. The

Is it possible to map shares via Network Neighborhood?
We're running Samba 2.2.2 over an NT network. Our clients use Win95 (for
the time being) and I wondered how we config Samba so they can map the
shares using network neighborhood. We can map fine through MS-DOS, but
when I try, for example, to map E drive to \\nfssrv\ads share via network
neighborhood (where we ARE able to see the shares), it says
E: is already connected to .

What to do in Windows 95 after configuring Samba
Hello,
I'm new to Samba so sorry for this trivial question. I've configured my
smb.conf with all the shares and enabled WINS support. I wanted to know what
do I have to configure in my windows 95 machine. My LAN setup is - one Linux
Red Hat 6.0 machine Pentium 166 and a windows 95 machine a 486. I've made my
Linux m/c the proxy server using Squid. Also whenever I boot my Win m/c it

Network is busy...
I have done a great deal of reading regarding the network is busy error,
but haven't come up with an answer for one particular problem. Here is the
situation. Two identical DGUX machines are sitting on a network. Both
machines are running Samba 1.9.10 with no problems other than performance.
Upon several recommendations about improving performance, they decided to
upgrade to 2.0.3.

Samba vs PAM
Hello..
I wonder, in which way Samba supports PAM? I downloaded
samba-2.0.6-19991110 and there I found in changelog it's compiled
with --with-pam..
My desire is to authenticate Samba users against Novell NDS. I
managed to do this (under Linux) with many programs but Samba somehow
resists :)
I put something like this into /etc/pam.d/samba :
auth required
