update on browsing problems
Hi all: After a little more ad hoc testing (and looking at the log files again) I have a little more info, though not a solution yet. I'm starting to get the feeling that it's something obvious I've missed... After restarting samba, the nmb log shows this: 1998/12/16 13:23:41 ***** Samba name server RAMA is now a local master browser for workgroup IV&V on subnet

WINS problem
Greetings Earthlings: I finally convinced the LAN guy to remove NetBlooie from our windoze clients. I also made the samba box the local and master browser (we have no NT boxes at the moment). Local browsing seems to have gotten faster (at least Mr. Robinson's Network Neighborhood resolves faster). However, our LAN is isolated (windoze clients dial out to get to the internet, retrieve

win95 client problems (registry limitation?)
Howdy: I'm new to this samba stuff, but I've run across a problem that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere. It seems that OSR/2 clients (with all the M$ system updates; I already added the EnableClearTextPassword key) that have had their TCP/IP settings tweaked in the registry (eg, MaxMTU=576, TTL=32, RWIN added, etc) for DUN connections have mucho problems with a samba

samba blamed for network problems (help!)
Howdy folks: Hi. It's me again. I've posted before about browsing problems, etc. Here's the setup: An isolated LAN (most clients have modems for dialling out) with one linux/samba machine (RedHat 4.2, kernel 2.0.30, samba 1.9.18p8) and ~20 win95 (OSR/2.1) clients. We used to have Netware 4.11 until the new PC/lan guy decided we didn't it any more (our old server now runs

password stuff
Greetings All: I hope everyone had a fun Halloween weekend (I carved 4 big pumpkins and gave out a bucket full of rubber eyeballs and stuff). I'm hoping somebody can explain the password behavior I've been seeing (and a couple of other things). Here's my setup: An isolated LAN (most clients have modems for dialling out) with one linux/samba machine (RedHat 4.2, kernel 2.0.30,

NT & Win98 slow copies
Howdy all: For those who are curious (eg, Peter de Groot <pdgtech@wantree.com.au>) here are the (I think) relevant posts from recent samba digests concerning win98 and or NT performance problems copying files between local drives and samba shares. It looks like there should be some new options to play with in the next samba release. Could Jeremy or Andrew confirm? (BTW, nice

smbmount questions
Howdy all: I'm trying to use smbmount to mount a win9x share and copy some files for backup, eventually to run as a script invoked via cron. I have RH6.1/samba 2.0.5a, and the windoze box is win95b. If I do the standard mount (smbmount //winbox/backup /mnt/smb04) I have to be root. Also, after it's mounted, I can't create any files there as a normal user (even though the

trouble adding share with restrictions
I am printing from linux to a printer attached to a win98 computer. I send a text file directly to the printer such as 'lpr -P BJC <file.txt>', the printer prints all the text as it should then fails to eject the last page and then goes off line. When I push the online button, it ejects the page and then is ready again. I am using a Cannon BJC4304. This printer supposedly can

Your post on Samba mailing list
Sorry, I guess I should have been more specific, I am printing from linux to a printer attached to a win98 computer. When I say text I mean when I send a text file directly to the printer such as 'lpr -P BJC <file.txt>'. When I say 'hang' what I mean is that the printer prints all the text as it should then fails to eject the last page and then goes off line. When I push

Samba WINS server and lost domain controllers
Hi all, I am using a samba WINS server for my Microsoft network that is split across 5 physical networks. For a long time, everything has worked fine, however recently we have had wierd problems with domain controllers "disappearing". Even with a primary or backup DC on the physical wire, workstations and other NT servers suddenly start complaining "a domain controller for DOMAIN
