Changing file permissions from NT
We run a Network of Suns (running Samba) and PC-NT (version 4, sp3)
machines, at work, and find it very annoying to be unable to change the
file permissions of files from NT on the Suns. Is there any way to
change the permissions from NT file explorer or otherwise ?

NT password problem
Just as a point I recently upgraded an old sun server here from samba
1.9.16p11 I think to a similiar 1.9.18p8 and with the old one I only had
to enter my password once and with the new one it was multiple times ..
Anyways this question is better off on the smba main list I think than
here ... which is for NTdomain controller stuff mainly ..

Heteroskedastic Time Series
Hi R-helpers,
I'm new to time series modelling, but my requirement seems to fall just
outside the capabilities of the arima function in R. I'd like to fit an
ARMA model where the variance of the disturbances is a function of some
exogenous variable. So something like:
Y_t = a_0 + a_1 * Y_(t-1) +...+ a_p * Y_(t-p) + b_1 * e_(t-1) +...+ b_q *
e_(t-q) + e_t,
where
e_t ~ N(0, sigma^2_t),

Installation/configuration problems
I've just installed samba 2.0.6 on our HPUX 11.0 system and am having
problems getting it to work. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm trying to use "security = DOMAIN". Our PDC/BDC are NT 4.0 SP6. The
workstation I'm trying to connect from is NT 4.0 SP4.
The HP machine shows up in the network neighborhood but appears to have
no shares available. smbd/nmbd are running. I

Can one get a list of recommended packages?
R 2.10.1 is used in the Sage maths project. Several recommended packages
(Matrix, class, mgcv, nnet, rpart, spatial, and survival) are failing to build
on Solaris 10 (SPARC).
We would like to be able to get a list of the recommended packages for R 2.10.1,
but ideally via a call to R, so it is not necessary to update that list every
time a new version of R is released. We do not want to access

Variable Scope
Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way to stop R looking outside the scope of
a function, if it can't find the variable inside the function.
I seem to waste hours debugging functions only to find I've used a wrong
variable name somewhere, but the function still works because the
variable exists higher up the hierachy. It seems it would be easier to
debug if the function just went

Corrections for Solaris stuff in manual
There are a number of errors in the R manual about Solaris.
http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-admin.html#Solaris
1) Firstly, Sun are now owned by Oracle, who bought them for $7 billion.
2) "(Recent Sun machines are Opterons (?amd64?) rather than ?x86?, but 32-bit
?x86? executables are the default.) "
That's incorrect. All recent Sun workstations used *Intel* CPUs -

Puppet installation and observations
Greeting Puppeteers,
( I sent this from the wrong address so it may be a duplicate post
after moderation )
I recently discovered puppet from the debian administration site and
thought I might install it after BASHING my head against cfengine the
last 3 times I tried to install it.
I installed puppetmaster on my primary server and dropped puppet on a
couple of xen virtuals.
It worked

yup, i'm still stuck
hi,
the last piece of advice i got just reminded me of how new i am at this.
You said to check the logs and make sure the user has permissions for those
folders. The log says alot of stuff, and i have no idea what any of it
means, if you want to see one, just ask and i can send you alot. The other
thing. how do i check if the user has permissions for the shared folders.

filling data into objects
I am trying to generate artificial data for feature selection. Basically trying to generate a total of 1000 features with 100 that are informative and rest are uninformative.
Informative.data.class1<-rnorm(100,0.25,1)
Uninformative.data.class1<-rnorm(900,0,1)
Informative.data.class2<-rnorm(100, -0.25,1)
Uninformative.data.class2<-rnorm(900,0,1)
The above will give me one set of data

Re: samba + winbindd with NT-DC problem... i'm stuck.
I think your problem is this:
> passwd: files winbind
> group: files winbind
> shadow: files winbind nis
the correct modification for nsswitch is
passwd: files winbind
group: files winbind
shadow: files nis
DON'T put winbind in shadow line!
then try with "getenet passwd" or "getent group" and you should see all
users in /etc/passwd and after them domain

Ruby & R
I see the packages from OmegaHat -- RSPython and RSPerl, however, I don't
see anything available for Ruby.
Is there a similar package for Ruby? If, not, is there the possiblility of
creating one?
Thx, Neil Eastep.

Scaling in SVM
Dear Community!
I'm using the svm method of package e1071 for classifying my data. This
really works fine, but however I have to work after creating the support
vectors and the parameters with unscaled data. So the problem is when I try
to train the classifier with the option "scale=F" the result is quite poor,
so training with scaled data is essential. The rescaling of the support

Processing hundreds of calls & faxes a day. No problem. If you are going to
use a Fedora box make sure you yum update right after install then the
kernel sources symbolic link is not horribly broken as it used to be.
Otherwise, just go.

RE: Is the 2.6 Linux kernel ready for production * environment
I was wondering what peoples thoughts are about this. It seem that * works
just as well on Linux 2.6 as 2.4. Maybe a few small issues here and there
but generally it seems to me that * is just as stable on either platform.
2.4 is the obvious choice for the highest possiblility of a stable well
tested environment but 2.6 seems to have some enticing benefits.
Can Linux 2.6 be considered a

Hi,
When building this Bioconductor package with R-devel:

I get the following:

If I install the package, Stangle and then source the vignette, I see that the "real" error is:
