Stupid redhat problem
I've got a stupid startup problem with samba under RedHat 5.0. Whenever I
restart the system (I moved the server yesterday, so it got a reboot) samba
doesn't startup. Looking at the /etc/rc.d/rc3.d directory shows there there
is no link from there to /etc/init.d/smb. I put such a link in at some
point in the past (after the LAST reboot, as I remember), and it has now
vanished. This is

Is there a reason...
That smbpasswd doesn't obey the smb passwd file option in the smb.conf
file? I've got the pre-compiled binaries for RedHat, version 1.19.8p10 and
I'm just shifting from security = share to security = user. I tried to move
the password file from /etc to /etc/samba, so that it would be in a
root-only directory (as recommended by encryption.txt) and I've just found
out that smbpasswd,

Rsync lock-up
I'm getting some odd behaviour from rsync - a lockup when doing local
copies. I tried to search the list archives, but I only came up with a
couple of hits from 2001 indicating folks thought this (or a similar
issue) was fixed.
Situation:
(OS is RedHat 7.2, Rsync rpm 2.4.6-5 and 2.5.5-1 exhibit the same behaviour)
rsync is copying on the same machine (local copy). The destination is NOT

Fax from Widows
Hey Guys
We've been using the respond program with SMB fax services and it's worked pretty good.
But I have one need which is not addressed by this software, which I'm hoping maybe
I can pay someone to hack into the windows code.
I need Respond to send a cover letter prior to being sent out, independent of the program queueing
the print job in windows. I was thinking I might be

Hylafax printer for Respond
Hello,
I have Hylafax set up on a RedHat 7.3 server (which uses Samba 2.3b, IIRC).
I am trying to get Respond[http://www.boerde.de/~horstf/], a Windows client
program, to work with it. The way it works is that samba shares a postscript
printer, which calls a perl script on the print command. The network is a
Win 2k network, and I want samba to verify with the lan server (or have open

enumprinters
The "printer drivers download" feature of SAMBA-2.2 is great.
Thanks to the SAMBA team.
I'm using SAMBA-2.2.0 and everything works fine except one
command:
$ ./rpcclient sdprint -U root -c 'enumprinters'
Enter Password:
rpc_api_pipe: cmd 26 on pipe 703e failed to return data.
result was NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
$
I can't say that rpcclient log file is useful for me but

Win311 Q: login & Windows EXIT
Hi
Maybe this is a common stupid problem, but when I try to login to
Samba server from Win311 (right after its start) Windows exits
very quickly to DOS prompt without error messages.
If I enter Windows without loginning to Samba server, and try to login
then it hangs (mouse is still active) showing me its watch.
I have a couple of Win311 hosts and this happends with all of them.
What could it

Samba Faxing..........
Dear All,
Has anyone come up with a decent faxfilter script that actually works
when use Samba + Mgetty/Sendfax.
I can print to Samba printers from Windows with no problems, and I can
use the faxspool command to send postscript files as faxes from a
Linux box. The only part I can't get to work is the vital link
between the Samba printer and

fax serving
Newbie question:
I have successfully set up a samba server for file & print sharing. What I'm
not sure about is how to set up a fax server. Has anyone tried to do this?
What all do you have to do, or maybe you could just point me in the right
direction.

Logging password failures
Doesn't Samba log login failures? I'd like them logged, preferrably (at
least to start with) with the tried id/password-pair. Do I have to get my
hands dirty with the source or has someone done this before me?
Thanks

Linux/Samba vs NT
I was having a discussion with a MS person about the performance of NT.
I got this reply:
---------- Forwarded message ----------
By the way, I looked into that claim that Linux could outperform NT server,
and my source claimed that the test was done on different hardware (i.e. it
was rigged) and that Linux still loses to NT on equivalent HW, although "it
has gotten closer." Do you

Seeing two different user folders!!!!!
In my high school computer lab I have Red HAt 5.0 with SAMBA being
used as a file server. The kids are getting used to it. But recently
I'm seeing something strange. A student with id "james" will log on
Windows 95, go to network neighborhood and to the Linux computer and
find there among other normal items two folders. The first will be
his own folder with his id, but the second

kind to confirm with me?
Our network is using a mix of Win2k server, Win2k Pro, Win98, Win95 and
WinMe machines, where the
Win2k server is the domain controller and terminal service applications
server and the Samba is a member
fileserver of the domain. All workstations logon and mount the samba file
services.
We'd like to check if the problem could be solved by

file names in Win Explorer
I'm having a problem getting W95 and WNT to correctly read file names on
a samba server I set up. The server passed all of the diagnostics, and
file names show up correctly in a dos window. However, under windows
explorer, anything after a . doesn't show up in the name. This is only
true for a . in the middle of the name, "hidden" files such as .fvwmrc
show up. WE does

Unwanted browselists
Is there a way to prevent browselists from machines other than those
of my choosing to show up in the browselists/network neighbourhood?
I don't want win95 clients that offer shares themselves to show up
in the network neighbourhood.

Follow-Up to my Solaris->NT issue (was: Samba Solaris->NT connection problem)
Hello again, folks!
There is one thing I neglected to mention on the
Solaris->NT connection issue I posted earlier today, and
which I believe is the source of the problem.
Two days ago, I "inherited" a NT server which I now use
as my workstation. I physically moved that NT server from
one place to the other (i.e., unplugging all the
cabling -- power, Ethernet, etc.) so that I can

Desktop files change?
Hi,
Does anyone know if they changed the way that desktop files for apps work?
It seams that inside your start script you can no longer change your
scripts directory.
Does it now call some form of restricted shell?
Anyone know where you can track these changes?
Thanks
