[SUMMARY] Re: New installation (samba passwords)
I had just sent this whine out when I discovered the ENCRYPTION.txt file
in the docs directory. Thanks to Bill Knox (no relation that I know of)
for confirming what I had begun to suspect when I finally RTFM.
My samba installation is now working like a champ.
I'm now wondering about an enhancement to smbpasswd that will allow
UNIX-like password expiration and forced changes. And of course,

Getting my samba server to show up in browse lists
I've succeeded in making my samba server visible around the net, however
I can't convince the thing to appear in the browse lists on remote
subnets. I've read John Terpstra's article on configuring a browser at
http://samba.anu.edu.au/samba/ftp/docs/BROWSING-Config.txt
however my (admittedly willful) ignorance of Microsoft networking is
making this article seem rather

Wins registration vanishes
Has anyone seen this yet?
I am having a problem with the my WINS entry for my Samba server disappearing from the WINS
database. After this takes place I am no longer able to access my Samba server so I am forced to
restart NMBD and a new entry is placed in the WINS database. Although over time this entry will
vanish again and I have to repeat the restart process. I am aware that I can add a

Missing Policies directory -> how to recreate it?
Hi all,
As I'm dumb, last time I played to update Samba version I forgot to keep a
copy Policies directory in $samba_dir/sysvol/$samba_domain_name/.
Is there any command to rebuild that directory with default policies?
If there is not, are the IDs of default policies are always the same or
samba generates this IDs? If they are always the same I would be able to
copy them from another

How to sync /etc/smbpasswd with /etc/passwd ?
While we do sync our /etc/passwd whenever /etc/smbpasswd is changed via the
Samba sync option that does not seem to be possible the other way round:
I just want a /etc/smbpasswd generated from my /etc/passwd with the correct
passwords as used for the UniX login...
Is that possible ?

Samba 2.0.3 and NT/9x
Dear all,
I recently upgraded to Samba 2.0.3 and read the doc files about NT
machines because I cannot connect to the Samba server.
In the WinNT.txt file there is the following proposal:
[ --- Start of pasted text --- ]
The following registry entry change will re-enable clear text password
handling:
Run regedt32.exe and locate the hive key entry:

Deleting Roaming Profiles
Hello,
If you don?t want (Who wants ?) to save roaming profiles under
Winnt\Profiles, than you have to change, or create (if not exist) a
registry string:
Run regedt32.exe and locate the key entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Add (or change) the following string:
DeleteRoamingCache
Standard value is 0, it has to be 1
All the Best.

read (and edit?) registry files on Linux
Hello,
Is there a way in Linux to read Windows registry files?
I have only ssh access to the Linux/Samba server, and would like to be able
to check settings in user profiles (in their ntuser.dat files). Best would
be if I could even edit settings in there.
For now, it seems the only thing I can do is scp the files to a Windows
machine, and manually load the hives in regedt32. Very

Registry on server
Hi, all,
I can connect to the 'registry' of our Samba server using regedt32;
I can't however change/add entries even though I start the program as
Domain Admin.
I get the message "Cannot create key. Error writing to the registry"
Does anybody have any idea what could cause this ?
Or is this expected behaviour
I have also found references on the net that one can add

I am trying to set up the Default Profile in XP for use with Samba. I am

We can see with the NT browser "ALPHASERVER4000" but if we double click on
it a password is requested.
We tried with Regedit with all this options.

here's a fix for Goldmine (and other ISAM database based programs) on Windows NT/2000/XP clients talking to samba
Goldmine seems to a compiled database application compiled in something likeClipper.
Clipper applications record lock through ISAM like files (DBF).
However, in Windows NT/2000/XP, Opportunistic locking is turned on
by default in order to accelerate file transfer from file services.
[Windows 95/98 did not Opportunisticly lock]
However, opportunistic locking corrupts ISAM and ISAM like

Experimental support for regedit.exe
FYI...
If anyone is interested, i just finished implementing supporting
for exporting printer & printer driver information stored
in the various tdb's via the registry RPC routines.
This code has been checked into HEAD already. I'm not planning
on including it in any 2.2 bug fix releases, but thought some
people might be curious to try it out. My main intent for

Remote Registry Changes
Heyho.
I'm trying to add registry entries to my workstations remotely from
my server. I can currently do this remotely from any other
workstation, using the standard Windows regedt32, but I'd like to do
it form the server. .. The server is Samba 3.0.22-r3 on a Gentoo server.
I've been digging around for a while now, and have managed to find
docs for samba-tng which seem to
