Unwanted browse lists
Michel,
One approach that hasn't been suggested is to block access to the netbios
nameservice port on the samba host with a firewalling rule. That way the
other computers on the subnet can't register themselves with nmbd.
Suppose that your internal network is all within the 192.168.15.0/24
network. Each Windows workstation will automatically announce itself with
a udp packet broadcast

Server disappears from Network Neighborhood
>From time to time someone will comment in this list that their Samba
server has disappeared from the list of hosts in Network Neighborhood.
Browsing the list archive has yet to turn up any good explanation of this
phenomenon.
I think I have a clue. This morning my server disappeared again. When I
checked the process list on the server I noticed that nmbd had been
swapped out to disk. The

FrontPage locking
Hi, Eric.
You asked:

It doesn't use SMB file transactions at all. Instead it uses GET/PUT http
commands to communicate with a remote server. Users are authenticated
with a username/password combo and are connected to a "web," MS's

compare / contrast of linux fw and others
Hi,
I was wondering how a linux box configured as a firewall stacked up
against some of the commercial products like checkpoint-1 and gauntlet.
Can someone direct me to a good book or online doc that compares linux
to some other firewall methods?
Mind you, I''m not talking about a firewall in the classical sense, ie
ip forwarding turned off and used as a proxy, but the typical Linux box

W95 and no update from samba shares
Hi,
i have a annoying problem that drives me crazy.
We have set up a Digital/Unix box with samba and the clients (W95) can mount
the shares from this box. On the Unix side we create a textfile which will be
periodically (or not) appended with new data. A Application on the W95 side
reads this file.
The Problem is, that the textfile has new lines, the Application don't see
them !!!

Ethernet card addr <-> IP
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hi everyone -
Someone I''m working with has a requirement to map ethernet card addresses
to unique IP addresses, and then have a Linux IP masquerade server know of
this mapping list and not allow any data to pass from any ethernet card
that a) it doesn''t know about, or b) isn''t assigned the right IP. Ideally
it would also log this

Problems starting smbd as a daemon
Hello Everyone,
I have installed samba-1.9.17p4 on a linux 2.0.29 box, but the server work

shares available on my server, this is the output:

Warning when compiling nmbd_incomingdgrams.c
I just downloaded samba-1.9.18p3.tar.gz and compiled it on a DEC 3000/300
running OSF/1 v3.0 (uname -mrsv gives: "OSF1 V3.0 347 alpha") using the
built-in cc compiler.
The compiler gives the following warning:

TBF settings
I presently use TBF with this syntax:
tc qdisc add dev eth0 parent 1:100 tbf buffer=15000/8 LIMIT=30000 MTU=1500
parent class is a cbq with rate=128Kbit
when I want to add PEAK, I get always RTNETLINK error: Invalid argument. Maybe be I don''t understand this parameter. What I know about it, it''s that it can control short-term burst traffic, and it''s what I need to do.

php3 module and security
Hi,
When php3 module is compiled in apache, files in any directory will
be interpreted by the parser and executed. This is a security breach.
There is a way to correct this? Any comments?
Thanks,

Voice Over IP QoS
I have a T1 link that will transport 512Kbit of H.323

multiple instances of asterisk spawning
Hello-
I have noticed that since i upgraded my kernel, asterisk spawns many
copies (usually approximately 18) when starting up. It then runs fine,
but there doesn't seem to be any reason for this behavior. I have tried
moving between different kernel versions, and all but the stock fedora
core 1 kernel exhibits the same behavior.
I have verified running this with both safe_asterisk (as I

PE and VMWare Question
I am working toward pitching a move from Open Source Puppet to Puppet Enterprise.
One of the driving points is that Where-I-Work has just made a huge investment in hardware/software in the form of a VMWare "local cloud".
In trying to figure out how to plug my current Puppet setup into it, I keep hitting references to middleware tools like "vSphere CLI for Linux" and

map question
Dear All,
wondering if anyone could help with a working code for the following:
I would like to plot a map using R that includes New York City (with counties of Kings, Queens, Bronx, New York and Richmond), Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk and Rockland counties (any color would be ok per county as long as they are different), and place 4 visible red dots at the following zip codes: 11219, 10960,

He may be able to get the nut packages from the distro CD,but no updates.
Gene, if you are running Fedora 10, an update to 12 would be well worth it,
and the nut rpm's are in the standard repo

Is anyone working on the bestfcom driver ?
I've just started using nut , and one of my UPSes is a Best Ferrups 1.8kva
bestfcom seems to be the driver that would support it, but as currently in
2.0.2 it doesn't work on the FE1.8kv. I've done some hacking this afternoon
and have it basically working.
This is the only Best I have, so if anyone else is working on this, I was
hoping to co-ordinate so I don't break any
