My current implementation uses attachment_fu - I save the file initially to the file system without generating thumbs, then a bdrb process picks up that file, generates thumbs, and saves to S3. In principle, yes (that's what Rserve serialization does), but AFAIR we don't have the infrastructure in place for that. But then you may as well serialize to a connection instead.
