Suggest Rsync Performance Improvements
1. Large 1 MB I/O, all reads and write to file systems 1MB (can use setvbuf to do this with out coding) e.g a awk programme doing 8K I/O to read 2GB file took 16 min, a perl programme doing 1MB I/O took 16 seconds. 2. When doing rsync -a /dir1/dir2 /dir3/dir4 Do not use pipe's, as they only read/write 5k at a time this is extremly slow, check it out with Solaris truss. Use sockets with

It may be fetched via ftp from : ftp://samba.anu.edu.au/pub/samba/samba-1.9.18p7.tar.gz This release is a security patch fix for a security hole reported on BugTraq by Drago. No exploit code was published with the report, so no immediate 'canned' exploit was available to an attacker The security hole may have allowed

Compilation problem on OSF/1
PArdon the "newbie" nature of this question, but I *am* a samba newbie I'm trying to compile samba-1.9.18p6 on a DEC Alpha running OSF/1 V3.0 (I know it's old, but I'm stuck with it). I've modified the Makefile as follows... ># Add any optimisation or debugging flags here ># add -DSYSLOG for syslog support >FLAGS1 = -O -std1 -w >LIBS1 = and ># This

QEMU dies on any attempt to load a Linux kernel module when using a 9P rootfs
Christopher, It sounds like you disabled zero-copy entirely, which is not necessary. As far as I recall, loading kernel modules is the only case in which valloc() allocated buffers are used. In the worst case, we only need to disable zero-copy on such buffers. I have been using a small patch to do precisely that since yesterday. I have attached it to this email since it sounds like the first

Fwd: Icecast temp patch (OR: Patches? We DO need stinkin' patches!!@$!)
Hi There, re. the recently reported buffer overflow in icecast, is there any "official" security patch against 1.3.11 ? I am reluctant to take any un-official patch like this one ;-) There is nothing on www.icecast.org/releases, maybe it's somewhere else ? Thanks. (from BugTraq) openssh2.2.p1 - Re: scp file transfer hole
X-PMC-CI-e-mail-id: 13726 Hi, I have been a successful user of Openssh for some time. I am attaching two articles from BugTraq. Hopefully, they show exactly the security problems reported in the BugTraq mailing list. [Pity that no one seemed to have bothered to contact the mailing list(s) for openssh development.] I am not sure what the right fixes would be. But at least, people need to be

Inforworld Article on Samba
Hi all, Inforworld (that's a rather large computer magazine is the USA) are thinking of doing an article on people using Samba to replace/supplement NT servers in commercial organizations within the USA. I told their editor I'd send out this request for people who fit the following criteria to send in their details : They need people who are : (a). USA Based. (b). Using Samba but

aligned memory allocation in C
Hi, I'm currently R porting SF Mersenne Twister algorithm of Matsumoto and Saito. To get the full power of their code, I want to use their fonction fill_array32 which need aligned memory. That is to say I need to use the C function memalign on windows, posix_memalign on linux and classic malloc on Mac OS. In 'writing R extenstion', they recommand to use R_alloc function to
