Hiding shares in Network Neighborhood?
Hi all -
I'll be the first to admit I don't know a lot about Windows
networking, but I've managed to get samba (latest version) up and running
and even have a cool netlogon script :)
My config has shares for [homes] and [netlogon] and [foobar] (a test).
When I look around in Network Neighborhood it lists homes, netlogon,
foobar, and philip (my username).
Is there some way to make

File locking issues? Has it been a problem for you?
Hi all-
I'm new to both these lists so if this isn't the right place,
point me in the right direction.
I've got a Sun that I want to use for file services for our desktops (Mac,
W95). I was planning on using netatalk and samba until I thought about
the lack of file locking b/n the two.
So, I started looking at other options (like Syntax's Totalnet),
but it's quite a bit of

Using "host" works, but not "host.domain.com"????
Hi -
I set up samba 1.9.18p4 on Solaris 2.6 and have things working for
the most part. One strange thing though. One a Win95 client when I type:
net use g: \\host\philip
I connect just fine, but when I type:
net use g: \\host.domain.com\philip
I get the following errror:
Error 53: The computer name specified in the network path cannot be
located. Make sure you are specifying the computer

Logging into a remote domain???
Hi -
I'll be the first to say I don't completely understand Windows
networking, but I did get the following to work when everybody
(clients-w95/server-solaris) were on the same subnet.
W95 boots up and prompts for username, password, and domain. I log in, and
presto I'm connected and netlogon scripts run and everything is great.
This is when I'm testing it on a completely

Can I specify a different username under Win95???
Hi all -
I have the latest samba up and running fine except for one small
problem. The username I use to log into the NT domain is different than
the username I log into samba with. I have no control over the former,
and would *really* rather not change the latter.
I've searched the net, and the archives, and got only saw bits and pieces
of this issue, never quite fully answered.

patch for replacing non-printable chars in filenames
There's a bug reported in Debian about the tty being screwed up by wierd
filenames, see http://bugs.debian.org/bug=242300
On the one hand, find will also do this. On the other hand, ls will
replace such chars with a question mark. Upon inspection, it appears to
be fairly simple to also do this in rsync (in the rwrite() function).
Here's a patch. Opinions? Perhaps don't do it

Ruby 1.8.4 causes script errors and invalid chars in RHTML
All,
This little bug caused me an hour so I thought I''d save others from it.
I upgraded to Rails 1.1RC and Ruby 1.8.4RC for Windows. 90% of the app
was working fine but a few RHTML templates were throwing a compile
error, with parse errors and invalid chars.
The culprit, tabs. Turns out Ruby 1.8.2 with Rails 1.0 didn''t care about
tabs in your templates but the new

client code page and valid chars
Problem:
I recently recognized that my samba server was misconfigured for some
years now. I never used the charset and "client code page" parameters in
my smb.conf to map windows encoded filenames with german umlauts to the
unix ones. For that reason I now have lots of filenames with windows
encoded german umlauts on my samba-share.
OK.
Now I want to change this fact (softly). When I

Problem w Samba on Alpha: No filenames > 80 chars displayed on Win Clients
Hello all,
I have a problem with the display of filenames > 80 chars when served by
Samba-3.0.0 to Windows clients.
System: GNU/Linux debian 3.0.1 upgraded to testing/unstable on ALPHA processor
(XP-1000),
Kernel: custom 2.4.22 + acl support (kernel pkg could only be compiled by
downgrading binutils to 2.12.90 & using gcc-3.0)

nightly r-devel.pkg builds failing since Jan 15
Hi all,
It looks like for intel macs (ie high sierra) the nightly build of R-devel
has been failing continuously since Jan 16th:
https://mac.r-project.org/high-sierra/last-success/
Is this a known issue? I didn't see any way to get at the relevant logs (of
the .pkg creation step), as the .tar.gz step succeeded.
Also, the framework (at least the non-pkg'ed one thats in the .tar.gz file)

special chars in windows filenames
Hi folks!
I upgraded a red hat linux fileserver (kernel version 2.4.18-14)
from samba 2.x to samba 3.02.
After the upgrade, the special chars in windows filenames
(German Umlaute) were no more visible to clients but either
substituted with a little black rectangle or completely suppressed -
depending on the client operating system (W2000/W98).
Within the archived list I found a hint that the

repeated measures nonlinear regression
Hi,
I found this email on the R website. I am trying to figure out how to
analyse a data set that I believe will need to be run through a procedure
involving repeated measures, regression and mixed models.
The data is of insect populations (dependent variable - either 0/1=binomial,
or as counts=poisson) in sites with different characteristics (multiple
independent variables which are both

Multiple user application - won't work
Hi.
I've installed the Windows-game, Caesar 3, through WINE. I installed it as
the user pingvin and everything runs just fine. But then if I switch to any
other user and configure WINE to fit them, and then try to run Caesar 3 - it
doesn't work.
I use Codeweavers WINE preview 3, the users config-files is in ~/.wine, my
Wine directory is in /usr/local/wine and I have done the chmod -R

It is doable from dhcpd.conf, however when adding a node, one must do:
* add uuid entry to dhcpd.conf
* restart dhcp
It is not always desirable (or convinient) when managing

Documentation Day!
I''m spending today writing documentation. I''ll be updating quite a few
documents, doing some edits, and adding some user contributed docs. If
anyone has documentation suggestions, FAQ questions they''d like
included, or things they think are old and stale, then let me know.

Two Qs: support special chars in filenames and auditing
Hi experts,
Two hopefully quick questions:
1. If I create files with names with special characters, such as
><*:"?\|, on the linux server box, I can see these filenames display
just fine. But windows client the special characters do not show up
properly. Is there a option to set? I tried:
In [global] section:
character set = ISO8859-2
client code page = 852
