Samba 2.0.3 and NT/9x
Dear all, I recently upgraded to Samba 2.0.3 and read the doc files about NT machines because I cannot connect to the Samba server. In the WinNT.txt file there is the following proposal: [ --- Start of pasted text --- ] The following registry entry change will re-enable clear text password handling: Run regedt32.exe and locate the hive key entry:

Login as non-guest user
Dear all, it's being a long time since the last time I posted something here... :-) How should I configure my Samba Server to allow users to login with the Win9x/NT boxes using the same account name as in the UNIX side and to keep the correct file and directory permissions? By now, if a user uses a Win9x/NT box to login as, for example, "martin", the files he transfers from the

Files creation ownership
Dear Samba Gurus, I would like to know how to configure Samba to keep the file ownership when someone creates a file on the Win95/98/NT boxes, instead of having everything set to guest.guest, what forces to change the ownership for that file to the right user.group everytime. For example: On the UNIX side, there's an account like martin.develop, so when I log in the network using a Win box,

Selecting files to get...
Hello everybody, I'm using Samba Version 1.9.17p3 on an IRIX 6.2-based workstation and because I still have the same problem with the shares on the PC-box (I'll send my report to samba-bugs too), I need workaround in order to get the smbtar process running. Here's my problem (I hope it's not too long): I can see what's being shared by the Win95 box where I want to make the

PopUp messages
Dear all, as you already know, it is possible to send short winpopup messages to Win boxes using the command smbclient -M host. If a Win user wants to reply, it should be possible to use the Windows' WinPopUp GUI to reply, but the message gets lost somewhere. For example: smbclient -M winbox Added interface ip=192.1.1.125 bcast=192.1.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0 Connected. Type your message,

Problems with installation
Hi, I am new with Samba, so excuse my primitive questions. I just started installing Samba on an SGI origin unsing IRIX 6.4. with windows NT workstations. I was following the UNIX_INSTALL.txt file and I got blocked and step 4 where I should test my "smb.conf" file with the executable "testparm". After I installed Samba by first doing make, then make install... I took the

Can I specify a different username under Win95???
Hi all - I have the latest samba up and running fine except for one small problem. The username I use to log into the NT domain is different than the username I log into samba with. I have no control over the former, and would *really* rather not change the latter. I've searched the net, and the archives, and got only saw bits and pieces of this issue, never quite fully answered. Is it

File locking issues? Has it been a problem for you?
Hi all- I'm new to both these lists so if this isn't the right place, point me in the right direction. I've got a Sun that I want to use for file services for our desktops (Mac, W95). I was planning on using netatalk and samba until I thought about the lack of file locking b/n the two. So, I started looking at other options (like Syntax's Totalnet), but it's quite a bit of

Hiding shares in Network Neighborhood?
Hi all - I'll be the first to admit I don't know a lot about Windows networking, but I've managed to get samba (latest version) up and running and even have a cool netlogon script :) My config has shares for [homes] and [netlogon] and [foobar] (a test). When I look around in Network Neighborhood it lists homes, netlogon, foobar, and philip (my username). Is there some way to make

repeated measures nonlinear regression
Hi, I found this email on the R website. I am trying to figure out how to analyse a data set that I believe will need to be run through a procedure involving repeated measures, regression and mixed models. The data is of insect populations (dependent variable - either 0/1=binomial, or as counts=poisson) in sites with different characteristics (multiple independent variables which are both

Is there an "invalid chars" option?
Hi all - Is there any way to prevent certain characters from being valid in filenames (other than rebuilding the valid chars and excluding the few invalid ones) ??? I would like to make it impossible to put the following characters in filenames: /, :, $, and a space since unix/macs don't like them much. Is this doable? Using "host" works, but not "host.domain.com"????
Hi - I set up samba 1.9.18p4 on Solaris 2.6 and have things working for the most part. One strange thing though. One a Win95 client when I type: net use g: \\host\philip I connect just fine, but when I type: net use g: \\host.domain.com\philip I get the following errror: Error 53: The computer name specified in the network path cannot be located. Logging of attribute changes when no data is transferred?
How can I get rsync to write a log record (like --log-format does for data transfer) when no content needs to be transferred but attributes (owner, group, mode, ...) are changed? -- Dave Mielke | 2213 Fox Crescent | I believe that the Bible is the Phone: 1-613-726-0014 | Ottawa, Ontario | Word of God. --backup leaves window where file doesn't exist.
When using --backup, the sequence (as monitored by strace) is: rename("/path/to/<file>", "<backup-dir>/<file><backup-suffix>") rename("/path/to/.<file>.xxxxxx", "/path/to/<file>") This, of course, leaves a momentary window wherein <file> can't be found. Might it be possible to replace the first rename()

Dynamically determined include/exclude list.
Is there a way to define a module within rsyncd.conf such that its include/exclude list is dynamically determined by executing a host command, e.g. find? If it can't be done today, is it the sort of feature which would be considered for future development? -- Dave Mielke | 2213 Fox Crescent | I believe that the Bible is the Phone: 1-613-726-0014 | Ottawa, Ontario | Word of God.

Default user when name not defined.
Have I missed an option somewhere? Is there a way to define a default user which is to be used when the actual user doesn't exist at the receiving end? Right now the action is to copy the user by number, but this is unsafe in certain environments, and it'd be much better to be able to name a default user. The same, of course, applies to groups as well. Thanks. -- Dave Mielke |
