Hiding shares in Network Neighborhood?
Hi all - I'll be the first to admit I don't know a lot about Windows networking, but I've managed to get samba (latest version) up and running and even have a cool netlogon script :) My config has shares for [homes] and [netlogon] and [foobar] (a test). When I look around in Network Neighborhood it lists homes, netlogon, foobar, and philip (my username). Is there some way to make

Is there an "invalid chars" option?
Hi all - Is there any way to prevent certain characters from being valid in filenames (other than rebuilding the valid chars and excluding the few invalid ones) ??? I would like to make it impossible to put the following characters in filenames: /, :, $, and a space since unix/macs don't like them much. Is this doable? Thanks! -- Philip Hallstrom Technical Director

Using "host" works, but not "host.domain.com"????
Hi - I set up samba 1.9.18p4 on Solaris 2.6 and have things working for the most part. One strange thing though. One a Win95 client when I type: net use g: \\host\philip I connect just fine, but when I type: net use g: \\host.domain.com\philip I get the following errror: Error 53: The computer name specified in the network path cannot be located. Make sure you are specifying the computer

Logging into a remote domain???
Hi - I'll be the first to say I don't completely understand Windows networking, but I did get the following to work when everybody (clients-w95/server-solaris) were on the same subnet. W95 boots up and prompts for username, password, and domain. I log in, and presto I'm connected and netlogon scripts run and everything is great. This is when I'm testing it on a completely

Totalnet
We have used the Syntax TotalaNET product (TAS) for some years. This provides similar funtionality to Samba. However the current version (5.2) does not support Win98 and the upgrade cost is very high. In looking at Samba as an alternative, I have two questions: 1. Does Samba fully support Win98? 2. Our users move easily between PCs, X-terminals and workstations, depending on their

Can I specify a different username under Win95???
Hi all - I have the latest samba up and running fine except for one small problem. The username I use to log into the NT domain is different than the username I log into samba with. I have no control over the former, and would *really* rather not change the latter. I've searched the net, and the archives, and got only saw bits and pieces of this issue, never quite fully answered. Is it

repeated measures nonlinear regression
Hi, I found this email on the R website. I am trying to figure out how to analyse a data set that I believe will need to be run through a procedure involving repeated measures, regression and mixed models. The data is of insect populations (dependent variable - either 0/1=binomial, or as counts=poisson) in sites with different characteristics (multiple independent variables which are both

How to specify username in mapping path?
We've got users logged into Win95 with one username, and they need to log into samba using a different username.... of course if they try to map to their home directory, samba will use the current username, which doesn't match, and therefore, password invalid. How can I specify username in the mapping? \\server\homedir <then somehow a username> I know there's a way in Totalnet

Multiple user application - won't work
Hi. I've installed the Windows-game, Caesar 3, through WINE. I installed it as the user pingvin and everything runs just fine. But then if I switch to any other user and configure WINE to fit them, and then try to run Caesar 3 - it doesn't work. I use Codeweavers WINE preview 3, the users config-files is in ~/.wine, my Wine directory is in /usr/local/wine and I have done the chmod -R

some cannot join domain
Hi, I have some machines (winXP and win2k) that cannot join my domain. Others I have joined to the domain. I am using the smbldap-tools 0.8.9 with an add machine script as follows: add machine script = /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbldap-useradd -w "%u" The LDAP entity gets created with objectClasses top, inetOrgPerson, and posixAccount. My impression is that samba then comes

How to update the root hints for bind DLZ
It looks like the original intention in our code was to be able to add/modify records with the "." zone. Trying it, there seems to be other issues with using it. I'm not entirely sure if this alias is valid against Windows or for which calls. I just hacked a patch (see attached) to see if I could add or modify another name server. samba-tool dns add $DC_SERVER . @ NS testing

Domain problem with NT4 & Samba 3.0.2a
All, I really need some help. I'm putting samba up on a new windows domain called SIERRA. I'm using Samba 3.0.2a on Solaris 8. I'm barely knowledgeable on Windows NetBIOS... but am good with Solaris. The status is that I've got the daemons running and working normally. I have 1 desktop with 1 PDC & 1 BDC in the SIERRA domain. On the desktop, I can see both DC's but

Hi all, This is a total newbe mistake I'm sure but I'm stumped. It can't see a network connection. I am getting errors in my terminal during the install even though it looks

openssh build failure on High Sierra (10.13.2)
Back in January/March of 2017, it was the case that building openssh with the latest openssl on MacOS 10.12.x (Sierra) was a bit of a bother. I could build everything with Xcode, but the resulting sshd segfaulted upon invocation (see the archives). So I built gcc 6.3 and used that to build openssh 7.x on Sierra. As long as machines stayed on 10.12.x, all was fine. Under High Sierra, the Xcode

File copy with macOS Finder leaves random files grayed out using vfs_fruit
Hi all, We use the vfs_fruit module and lately we have experienced that random files copied with Finder are being grayed out. We think this is probably due to the extended attribute "user.DosStream.AFP_AfpInfo:$DATA" not being updated/removed after the file is copied. If we manually remove the xattr in question with the command setfattr -d 'user.DosStream.AFP_AfpInfo:$DATA', the

Memory allocation gone awry with OpenSSH 3.(3,4)p1
Hello, I have recently upgraded from an older version of OpenSSH to the newer 3.3p1 (first) and now to 3.4p1 - because of the discovered vulnerabilities. The default setting for these versions is to use privilege separation, and this seems to trigger some weird bug with my systems, causing sshd to consume memory until it barfs. Details: 1. OpenSSH 3.3p1, privsep on, compression on:

Sierra destroyed my KDE Wine Menu
Something curious happen last night. Loaded an old game by Sierra - After Dark Games. Prior to loading the game, the Wine menu was fine, yet after, all that was left was the 'Program' directory. The links to utilities were gone. I suspect this was due to Sierra's menu creation routine loading a Sierra menu at the "root" of the menu. I was able to rebuild the menu under

Bug#821254: systemd[1]: xendomains.service start operation timed out.
