how to drop fields by name when reading in data?
I have a number of space separated files of weather data, with some
equivalent column names, and differing number of fields in each file. Some
of the files have 40 or more vars, but I only want a subset of the fields.
I can use colClasses with read.table to drop some of the fields, but only if
I know where those columns are in the first place, and they're not always in
the same place. So I

CentOS-6.5 - CD/DVD does not sense media
I dealing with problem 1 - see previous message - I set about creating
a live DVD on my development system. Now I find that I cannot seem to
mount a medium in that drive. wodim --devices reports it as present
and so does cdrecode. I can use the eject utility to toggle the tray
open and closed. But when I load a blank dvd or cd in that unit I get
nothing on my desktop - in other words I am not

Difficulties with for() {while(){}}
Hi,
I have the follow function:
function() {
## Init of function
...
for(i in test) {
...
while(j <= test2) {
...
}
}
}
The problem is that sometimes, naturally, the while is not possible to be
resolved, and so the program abort.
In this case I need that program return to the init of function and run again.
How I can make this? Abort the while, abort the for

Sipura SPA-3000 setup in Brazil
All-
I'm attempting to set up a Sipura SPA-3000 in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Not being a
portuguese speaker, I'm having a rough time of finding the relevant
information on how to make the thing pick up the PSTN line and make an
outbound call.
The sipura in question works fine on a bench connected to a POTS line in the
US, but is now plugged in in Sao Paolo. The immediate thing I notice is that

Help searching a matrix for only certain records
Let me start by saying I am rather new to R and generally consider myself to be a novice programmer...so don't assume I know what I'm doing :)
I have a large matrix, approximately 300,000 x 14. It's essentially a 20-year dataset of 15-minute data. However, I only need the rows where the column I've named REC.TYPE contains the string "SAO " or "FL-15".

MOre on buring ISOs
So right now I have installed k3b on this notebook. I am using my Storix
DVD/CDRW usb drive. I can read cds with it.
Cannot burn CDs. First k3b suggests slowing down (from 8x to 4x). Then
use TAO. Then it gave up.
So I try cdrecord directly. -checkdrive finds some interesting things.
Got to close the drive manually; cdrecord says it can't. then try a
cdrecord -v dev=dev/scd0 sample.iso

Ordering problem
I have an ordering and factor problem to which there must be a simple
solution! The version is R 2.0.1 (2004-11-15) on A Linux platform.
A data frame H is read in from a .csv file using read.csv with as.is=TRUE.
Another data frame HN is constructed from data and I want to compare two
columns both named ss of the (sorted) data frames that are the same
length.
The problem is that HN$ss is

I am unsuccessfully trying to write a data DVD on FreeBSD 4.8.

Both with cdrecord ProDVD (from the ports or otherwise) and dvdrtools
I get a general SCSI retryable error message, when trying to write a
data track or blank a DVD.

XML for tc hierarchy representation
Hi list, I would like to know about any proposed XML representation for
tc objects hierarchy. I found something at "LTCM, a Linux QoS API
Library" (http://artemis.av.it.pt/~ltcmmm/) that looks like a start, but
any others are welcome.
I''m starting a project to automatically syncronize traffic shape rules
between servers and thought XML is the best way to represent tc
