UMASK Problems
I have quite a problem with the new SAMBA version(s) ( both 1.9.17
and 1.9.17 p2).
When creating a directory in a samba-mounted
unix file system the create mask entry will be ignored. I tried
a lot (changing umasks on the unix boxes (SunOS/Solaris), changing
the create mask entry to a many different values) but nothing
happens at all. Every directory will be created with the permissions
of 755.

Server string in Network Neighbourhood
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the string that appears in browser lists restricted to being a single string without spaces, or can you include spaces ?
I have samba v1.9.15p8 running on a SGI O2 system, and I'm accessing its filesystems from a W95 PC.
I started off with the following line in my /etc/init.d/samba script
NMBD_OPTS="-C11th Floor SGI O2"
which results in

RPC client on unix, server on NT
I'm writing a secure RPC Server for NT, and I'd like to write a
UNIX client. How can I have the UNIX client authenticate to
the NT server (which uses LAN Manager/SMB)?
Thanks,

nmbd crashing as domain controller
Hi,
We've been over this before many times, I think... it's about nmbd
crashing in 1.9.17 (all patchlevels, AFAIK).
Various suggestions have been suggested (cron jobs to kill off / restart
nmbd every hour) but no fixes to nmbd itself (I think).
Do the Samba team know of a fix (or could they do one; if they know what
the problem is)? A new [fast] machine added to our network recently

Samba + NT w/s freezes
I am running redhat 6.0 and samba 2.0.3. Apps are executed by the w/s but
datafiles and databases are stored on the linux server. Occasionally *all* of
my workstations freeze up, or are unable to see the info on the server anymore.
The drive mappings still exist, I can browse the drives, but the app won't run
on any workstation.
So far, the only way to clear this has been to reboot the

NT domain logon questions
Hi. Myself and a anti-Micro$oft companion tried to get
NT domain logons working yesterday and seem pretty close, but
not quite.
Samba is 1.9.18alpha3, server is an Ultra-2 running SunOS 5.5.1.
Encrypted passwords seem to be working, a la smbclient and mostly
from NT, "mostly" because it *seemed* to be working but we did
have some problems with home directories in smbpasswd changing

Hi,
I've cross-posted this to freedesktop@, as the xdg@ list is only used

--exclude-from works but "exclude from" in rsyncd.conf doesn't ?
I'm setting rsync up for the first time and would prefer to have the
exclude file defined in the conf file, but the exclusions aren't
honoured when I define the parameter in rsyncd.conf - although they are
when I specify the file in an argument. The server is the remote system
and both rsyncd.conf and the exclude file are the same on both local and
remote systems. I'm attaching the

NT - Not allowed from this workstation
I am the sysadmin in an office with an overabundance of Win95 machines and
a few NT 4.0 workstations. All installs went relatively easy for logon
scripts, wins, etc. I have run into a semi-serious problem with 2 of the
3 NT workstations. (All running the same service pack - 1).
When trying to make a share from one of the 2 remaining workstations, I
will recevie an error message saying that:

Downloading Reuters data from R
Hi R,
Can we download Reuters (3000 Xtra) data from R? Does ODBC package help
me in this? Or otherwise, is there a way to extract daily closing prices
data of Reuters from R?
Thank you very much,
Shubha

Any plans implement MaxAuthTriesLog?
Hello there,
I've just upgraded to 3.9p1 and I notice that I'm not getting any "Too
many authorization failure" messages written to my syslog.
This seems to be controlled by MaxAuthTriesLog in Sun's implementation
of SSH. Are there any plans to do the same in OpenSSH?

Richard Dickens

Porting to Dynix 4.1.3...
Hello there,
I am trying to build OpenSSH on the above (very old) version of unix.
With a bit of hacking, I have managed to get everything to compile and
run. Scp works fine however when I log in via ssh I end up with a
session without a controlling terminal.
I have followed the code in pty_make_controlling_tty and it seems to go
as follows:
1. Starts with a controlling tty.
2. setsid works,

utime and backing up files
I read in the Samba docs that there is a problem with "utime()" when
a user updates another users file the modified time cannot be updated.
According to the docs, even if it the file has write permissions set
for the non-owner.
When I attempt to do a test on a files that is mode 777, I create
the file as one user, wait a minute, edit it again as another user,

Troubles with stemming (tm + Snowball packages) under MacOS
Dear all,
I have some troubles using the stemming algorithm provided by the tm

Here is my config:

I have installed all the needed packages (tm, rJava, rWeka, Snowball)

package tm: reading XML files
Dear fellow R users,
I'm using the package tm for text mining, and have a problem with
reading in a corpus from XML files.
When I copy the example from "Introduction to the tm package" of the

with the required meta data.
When I read in the entire reuters21578 corpus in XML format however (or

Only one chance to enter a new password?
Hello there,
We are using OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7d 17 Mar 2004 on various
Solaris boxes with PAM and an LDAP server back end.
Recently we have added a requirement for users to have complex
passwords. The problem is, if a user's password has expired, when they
log in they are prompted for a new password (good) but if they enter a
non-complex new password the session is closed rather than

issue with SE/Linux - sshd not giving access to /dev/pts/[n]
hi there,
i have an issue on my newly created Debian/SELinux/unstable system.
i have pam 0.77 se1 installed
ssh 3.8.1p1-4 (OpenSSH)
and libselinux1 1.12-1.
i can log in as root, fine.
but i cannot log in as an ordinary user, and i had to grant
special permission to the _user_ process (NOT sshd or pam
before a setuid and exec is carried out) to access
/dev/pts/0.
