from MD4 to MD5 (http://rsync.samba.org/ftp/rsync/src/rsync-3.0.0-NEWS). My understanding is that MD5 is a more secure, slower version of MD4 but I am not convinced that the added security of MD5 would alone have merited the change from MD4 (particularly since MD4 is ~30% faster than MD5). I wonder if I am missing other reasons which made the change necessary/desirable? I am looking at ways

rsync 3.0.7 network errors on MS-Windows
I am experiencing intermittent network failures on rsync 3.0.7 built using cygwin for Windows-XP (SP2). I am using GCC v4.4.2 and the latext version of cygwin. The rsync error long indicates things like: rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4092 bytes to socket [generator]: Connection reset by peer (104)rsync: read error: Connection reset by peer (104) rsync error: error in rsync

[PATCH] Cygwin: Avoid implicit declaration warnings
Hi, I have left this slip through already too long. When compiling openbsd-compat/bsd-cygwin_util.c, the following warnings appear: openbsd-compat/bsd-cygwin_util.c: In function `binary_open': openbsd-compat/bsd-cygwin_util.c:67: warning: implicit declaration of function `open' openbsd-compat/bsd-cygwin_util.c: In function `binary_pipe': openbsd-compat/bsd-cygwin_util.c:73:

[PATCH]: Match Cygwin version check to reality
Hi, the following patch rearranges some checkings in bsd-cygwin-util.c to keep in sync with Cygwin versions. I moved the uname() check into it's own function so that it's easier to add further checks when necessary. [PATCH]: Cygwin: Allow sshd to switch user context without password
Hi, the following patch checks if OpenSSH is running under a Cygwin version >= 1.3.2 which allows switching user context without password. Otherwise sshd allows changing the user context only if password authentication is used as it was before. The server is configured to refuse --iconv
I've just tried upgrading to cwrsync 2.1.0 (Rsync version 3.0.0 protocol version 30) between 2 Windows XP Pro sp2 machine across the Internet. I used: SET CYGWIN=nontsec SET HOME=c:\cwrsync\bin C:\cwrsync\bin\rsync -za -u -P --delete --recursive /cygdrive/c/test2/ stuart@test.address.co.uk::test/ When I run the above batch script on the remote machine I get this odd output.

[PATCH] Two Cygwin related patches
Hi, the attached patch file contains two patches in one: - contrib/cygwin/ssh-host-config: Create sshd_config according to latest changes. - openbsd-compat/bsd-cygwin_util.c: Rewrite a bit to allow easier retrieval of Cygwin capabilities from version number (uname). For Cygwin versions beginning with API minor version 56 assume ntsec being on by default. Thanks in advance for applying

Rsync, Cygwin, & SSH: ntsec OR nontsec?
Hi all, Thank-you to all the developers for rsync. It is very well done. I have rsync running on various platforms connecting to the same server and all is good. Except for 1 Win2000 Prof. server. I backup several directories with various permissions and users successfully. However, there are 2 directories that even though the permissions are the same as other directories that are

Inheriting security permissions from target directory with Cygwin
I am trying to upload a directory structure with rsync via ssh from one domain to another. I would like the target files (which may or may not already exist on the target machine) to assume the security permissions of the target directory they are placed into, since the target machine lies in a different domain. Currently, when I upload these files they seem to assume some strange random

intermittent failures when reuse_port is enabled
I'm encountering connection issues to Dovecot when reuse_port is activated. Some of the connections work fine, but about every 3rd of them does not receive the banner after the TCP connection has established: # nc -v 10.6.7.133 143 Connection to 10.6.7.133 143 port [tcp/imap2] succeeded! * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE STARTTLS AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN]

smbfs: intermittent failures when accessing W2K server
I think I am experiencing a problem with samba 2.2.8 and kernel 2.4.20. I am using these versions on a number of computers in a render farm. These (Linux) computers use smbfs to access a Windows 2000 file server. Two things that I notice: 1) The rendering application (Maya) fails due to a failure to access files on the file server when first run after the Linux machine is started.

Intermittent failures of internal DNS
Every once in a while, the DNS fails to resolve external domains ? but the DNS forwarder is still reachable (8.8.8.8, I assume it would be noticeable if it had any issues). What debug class is used by the DNS code? I don't really want to put several DCs on log level 10 for possibly days? -- Mit freundlichen Gr??en, / Best Regards, Sven Schwedas Systemadministrator TAO Beratungs- und

PAM can have all kinds of plugins that can do all kinds of things.

Dovecot 1.2.13 intermittent authentication failures
Hey folks, I recently upgraded my mail server from an older OpenBSD -CURRENT snapshot to the latest (Aug 1). As part of this upgrade, I updated all of my packages to their latest versions. Since this upgrade, dovecot has begun failing to authenticate intermittently. I use it primarily for web mail (Squirrelmail 1.4.20) and leave myself logged in during the day. This problem manifests

Intermittent IMAP Login failures - about 25% fail
New server & just added three domains: now I see "dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts in 5 secs): user=<username.companyname>, method=PLAIN, rip=1.1.1.1, lip=99.99.99.99, TLS, session=<kw6Y2NYviQBex5Un>" Plus all Outlook users keep being bounced and finally get in. I am going to kill all the users soon... Not too many files open, nor bandwidth,

Intermittent logon failures
Samba 1.9.17p2 running on SPARC 4 Solaris 2.5. Windows 95 clients. For some time now I have been hearing reports of users not being able to logon to the domain--but I've never seen it happen myself, and I never do anything to fix it. It's just this annoying problem that doesn't happen often enough for me to ever see or track down. Today, FINALLY, I tried logging into a machine and

Solaris Samba 3.5.8 [homes] configuration - intermittent connection failures
Our Solaris 5.10 was running Samba 3.0 with ADS security against winbind and krb5.conf, and all users were able to access it from any Windows system. Following the upgrade to a new AD server running 2008 RC2, we had to upgrade samba on most Unix systems. On Solaris, the new version was 3.5.8 from Sun. I found more config options were required to get the [homes] section to succeed, although I

windows acl with rsync possible ?
Hi all, (i am new at rsync althought using it for a year and half) i was unable to find a direct answer to this questions : _does rsync under windowz really support ACL replication ?_ if I "rsync" a directory, files inherit from the acl of that dir. but if special acls are setted on some files these are lost in the replication : only inherited acls are written i tried this with rsync
