Logging of attribute changes when no data is transferred?
How can I get rsync to write a log record (like --log-format does for data transfer) when no content needs to be transferred but attributes (owner, group, mode, ...) are changed? -- Dave Mielke | 2213 Fox Crescent | I believe that the Bible is the Phone: 1-613-726-0014 | Ottawa, Ontario | Word of God. --backup leaves window where file doesn't exist.
When using --backup, the sequence (as monitored by strace) is: rename("/path/to/<file>", "<backup-dir>/<file><backup-suffix>") rename("/path/to/.<file>.xxxxxx", "/path/to/<file>") This, of course, leaves a momentary window wherein <file> can't be found. Might it be possible to replace the first rename()

Dynamically determined include/exclude list.
Is there a way to define a module within rsyncd.conf such that its include/exclude list is dynamically determined by executing a host command, e.g. find? If it can't be done today, is it the sort of feature which would be considered for future development? -- Dave Mielke | 2213 Fox Crescent | I believe that the Bible is the Phone: 1-613-726-0014 | Ottawa, Ontario | Word of God.

Default user when name not defined.
Have I missed an option somewhere? Is there a way to define a default user which is to be used when the actual user doesn't exist at the receiving end? Right now the action is to copy the user by number, but this is unsafe in certain environments, and it'd be much better to be able to name a default user. The same, of course, applies to groups as well. Thanks. -- Dave Mielke |

syslinux unable to find vmlinuz
Hi: Two scripts (mkbd.fails and mkbd.works) are attached to this message. The only difference between them is in how syslinux.cfg (on a RedHat boot image) is replaced. mkbd.fails: syslinux.cfg is replaced via "mv -f". vmlinuz can't be found. mkbd.works: syslinux.cfg is replaced via "cp". vmlinuz is found. The only difference I can see between these two methods is that

Group changes made over and over?
Hi, I have several Debian servers with puppet 0.23.2. Part of my manifest looks like this: class virt_all_users { @group { "andy": ensure => "present", gid => "1000" } @user { "andy": ensure => "present", uid => "1000",

Errors for shares since 4.12.0
Hi, in March I wrote a mail to the list and reported an error I got using samba 4.12.0. I just want to inform, that I got personal mails from five or six samba users, that had the same problem without any solution. So I'm not the only one, who had this kind of problem. Unfortunately, I do not have more information on this error nor a solution. Due to corona I wasn't able to give

smbclient sending command to windows servers
I once used smbclient (or something in the smb suite) to send a command to windows and reset my windows password. I can't recall how I did it though (over a year ago). What I would really like to do is use smb to send a command to a windows machine that would run a script (shutting down Interwoven) and then back up all the Interwoven files using rsync. The RSYNC portion is easy since I

Tutorial SambaXP 2020
Since 2014 I do a tutorial on the first day of the SambaXP conference in G?ttingen, this year due to corona it was a online conference :-(. So I had to do my tutorial also as a online version. This years topic was: building a CTDB-cluster with Samba 4.12 and GlusterFS 7.x. If you are interested in the handout and the Vagrant-box and install-script you will find everything here:

Syntax for mounting Samba shares under Linux?
I'm having a hell of a time mounting Samba shares under Linux. Both server and client are running kernel v 2.2.1x on otherwise RedHat v6.0 systems. The machine running the Samba (v2.0.5a) server is working great. Directories and printers are easily accessable from Win98 and OS/2. It's Linux as a SMB *client* that is giving me problems. I can easily mount shares from a command prompt

Errors for shares since 4.12.0
Hi All, Sorry for being quiet, I was busy last days. But tonight I am doing bisecting to find the "guilty commit" - started from master as "bad" and v4-11-latest as "good". Still 8 steps to test in bisecting - each one takes about half an hour (2 cores VM on the i3 cpu computer). Will let you know. Pawel. czw., 7 maj 2020 o 09:30 Andrew Bartlett <abartlet at

is glusterfs DHT really distributed?
Hi All, I noticed a very weird phenomenon when I'm copying data (200KB image files) to our glusterfs storage. When I run only run client, it copies roughly 20 files per second and as soon as I start a second client on another machine, the copy rate of the first client immediately degrade to 5 files per second. When I stop the second client, the first client will immediately speed up

Would like to run PC Study Bible
Would like to run PC Study Bible ver. 2 from BibleSoft on Linux. Research has led me to WINE. I am new to Linux, have Mandriva 2009 installed. I just DL'ed WINE for Mandriva 2009, and got it going. I tried to install PC Study bible from CD, no dice. I then copied the entire contents of PC Study Bible folder from a windows computer to flash drive and copied it to Linux computer. Still
