include/exclude: I miss the point
Hi all,
I thought I understand how include/exclude and their precedences work (I
read the user guide about this), but I seem to miss something.
I have 2 questions about this, separated by ======
Question 1:

I want to exclude the "hidden" directories except some sub-dirs or files:
.mybackup and its files) and the mozilla firefox bookmarks folder and its

Which rsync version?
Hi all.
I once tried to rsync around 100 GB (10 million files), but version
2.6.6 needed too much RAM and was too slow.
Is one of the snapshots stable enough to try this again?
Greetings
Sven

Recommended way for initial backup before rsync calls
Hi rsync'ers.
What can you recommend to create the initial backup of a
partition before calling rsync
(under Linux, 100 GB, 10M files, only normal files and
some soft links)?
(Using rsync takes too long for this initial copy.)
Here are some candidates:
1. star -copy -no-fsync -p -xdot -C $1 . $2
2. tar -C $1 -cf - . | tar -C $2 -xf -
3. cp -a $1 $2
4. cpio ...
...
Any experiences?

fixing user, group, and mtime with rsync?
Hi all.
I prepared a mirror (that is intended to be updated by rsync)
by doing the initial copy using cpio (for efficiency on 15 million files).
Unfortunately, user, group, and mtime of some directories and files
was copied incorrectly.
Can I use rsync (GIT) to fix this?
Greetings
Sven

Hi.
I get the feeling it's time to turn this list into a moderated one ...

3.0.0 test failure MacOS X 10.4.11
Hello all,
I was eager to test the fresh release with MacOS X using "bbouncer"
This is how I compiled and run the tests:
patch -p1 <patches/osx-create-time.diff
patch -p1 <patches/fileflags.diff
./prepare-source
patch -p1 <patches/backup-dir-dels.diff
./configure
make
make test
sudo make install
Then compiling and running "bbouncer" from

I have also been eager to test bbouncer
The latest source passes with flying colours!
but make check finds some problems with xattrs if not run by sudo
I have xattr in /usr/local/bin/ from the source found at:
http://dev.bignerdranch.com/public/bnr/eXttra.zip
What I did:
cd /usr/local/Source
rsync -av --exclude=.git/ rsync://rsync.samba.org/ftp/unpacked/rsync .
rsync -av --exclude=.git/

persistent generic device for tape changer
Hello Ron,
sounds good. I have 2 tape changer. I persume, udev creates the same
link for both.
Can I modify
SYMLINK+="changer-$env{ID_SERIAL}"
The serial should be unique.

tar exclude question
Hi List,
hope this is not too offtopic, but this bothers me and my backup.
My backups are tar jobs in cron, eg:
20 23 * * * tar -zcf /mnt/backupInternalHosts/backup/backup.tar.gz
/etc /root /home && touch /tmp/state_backup-backup
This always sends me an unwanted email with:
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
I consider this a bug because this informal message is

Hello,
we have a pair of IBM P570 servers running RHEL5.2

We have Oracle RAC on ocfs2 storage
ocfs2 is 1.4.7-1 for the above kernel (downloaded from oracle oss site)

Adding OpenBSD sudo to the FreeBSD base system?
Aloha!
(I've Googled around a bit, but failed to find much previous posts about
this though I'm sure it has been discussed...)
Have anybody (in core etc) considered adding a sudo implementation to
thr FreeBSD base system. At least for me, sudo is an important part of
implementing good security policy in FreeBSD.
Yes, it is available as a port, but in a similar fashion of for example,

How 'bout PAM? /usr/ports/security/pam_ldap. If you have machines that
can't do PAM, perhaps NIS is the way to go (assuming, of course, you're
behind a firewall). You can store login information in LDAP like you want,
then use a home-grown script to extract the information to a NIS map. Or,
if you have a Solaris 8 machine lying around, you can cut out the middle
step and use
