Help request from non-expert: mounting a samba drive with the right charset for accented filenames
Hi all,
I hope someone might be able to offer me some advice. I have a NAS
box, a QNAP TS-109 which runs a version of Debian Linux. It has a
local ext3 drive, and I also smbmount a network drive on it (a Lacie
ED mini which I have tried formatted as both ext3 and FAT32 without
solving my problems).
My problem is that I am unable to correctly rsync files with accented
characters in the names

Sweave and accents
Hello.
I want to write my notes in Sweave in my own language (spanish). But
my language has accents and when I run Sweave in R to translate my Snw
file into the tex file the accents are translated into unrecognizable
characters.
For example, the word "cami?n" (truck) is translated into "cami??n"
Somebody knows how can I do it?
One solution I don't like is using a

accented characters in isolinux
hey people
I'm new to the list and would like to say thanks to everyone that has
worked on syslinux/isolinux. It's one of those tools that everyone uses
at some stage but no-one ever really takes much notice of it - mainly
because *it just works*. So congrats ...
Now onto my question - I am customizing Fedora Core and I want to change
the isolinux boot.msg screen to display some

samba 3 accented names case mangling with win 98
Hi all,
banging my head on the wall here... I think I'll never really understand
codepages stuff.
smbd is v 3.0.1, client is french win98 - yuk
my smb.conf reads:
unix charset = UTF-8
display charset = UTF-8
dos charset = CP850
when I create a folder/file with accents in it, I can create it ok, but
reading proves impossible.
If i create file ??????, it shows ok in the file explorer

isolinux, extlinux and accented characters
Hello,
First of all, thanks very much for this piece of software, it's working
like a charm.
I'm using it to boot a Linux distro I'm working on.
What I want to deal with is the display of accented characters in ISOLINUX.
First, I set EXTLINUX up to boot an ext2-formatted USB stick. No problem
so far.
I wrote a config file ordering to load a font (lat-9w) to display french

dump and import MySQL table w/ accents
I am switching to a composite primary key (string and user ID) from the Rails
conventional auto-incrementing integer primary ID. The table is large (2.5
million records) and I''d rather not discard the contents. The
composite_primary_key gem doesn''t appear to support altering the table with a
migration to do its magic, only creating a table from scratch. So I dumped
the table

plot scale
Hi,
Is there a way to set the scale of a plot (i.e. number of axis units
per centimeter) when you output it to postscript? If not, how am I
supposed to plot graphs with different axis limits to the same scale?
They just get resized to fit the paper so that graphs which show a
smaller number of axis units end up with a larger scale.
Cheers,
Ben

researcher with highly skewed data set seeks help finding practical GLMM tutorial
Hi!
I am a psychologist who suspects that the only sensible way to analyse
a particular data set is to use generalised linear mixed models. I am
hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction
to find some very practical hands on documentation that might be able
to talk me through actually doing such an analysis?
So far in my searches the most useful document I have turned

French accents on characters
Hello
Could someone please direct me to the correct commands for adding accents
(grave and aigu) to a letter in a plot title, label, or in added text? I'm
sure there's a handy list somewhere, but I've failed in coming up with the
correct search words to find it.
Thank you muchly!

Ajax calls and characters encoding (accents)
Hello, my application controller defines
before_filter :set_charset
def set_charset
@headers["Content-Type"] = "text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"
end
Everything is fine and accents are rendered correctly in the browser.
However, when I call a controller/action from Ajax (Prototype), the
charset is not taken in account and accents are garbage displayed (''?''

PATCH to Samba >= 2.2.1, accents and special chars
Okay, I've had some fun there. Let me tell I am no samba pro, so the patch
below _should be tested and tested again_ in _your_ environment before doing
anything close to putting your patched samba into production. It can possibly
break everything. You have been warned.
The mail is somehow longish, because sending a quick (and dirty) patch
without any explanation seems wrong to me. And

Accented characters in share names
Hello,
I'm facing a problem that should be common but for which I don't find
much info. I'm trying to smbmount some smb share served by a w2k3
server. I've no problem to mount the shares unless their name includes
accented letters. I've successfully replaced the spaces in the names by
\040 but replacing the accented letter by their UTF-8 and latin-1 in
octal value, but
