Backing up resource forks
So, I backed up a Mac OS X workstation that crashed, and learned the hard way that OS X uses things ( particularly for fonts, it seems) known as 'resource forks', which don't get backed up with normal tools. Ouch. A little research showed me that rsync (2.6.9) for Mac supports the -E option, which is supposed to back up the resource forks, too. But when I rsync over to a Ubuntu Lucid

Interoperability with MAC OSX clients, resource forks, xattrs
Hi folks, I wish you all a happy new year! I want to migrate a fileserver for Windows und MAC OS clients with ancient versions of samba and netatalk to samba 3.6 (with a samba 4 domain controller), but this raises quite some issues. The new server should - if possible - not be running netatalk. While the package is quite mature, being able to access the same share with both CIFS and AFS

Does rsync 2.6.9 works for resource forks in Mac OS X
HI All, I'm new to this rsync world. Please bear with me if it looks odd. I've downloaded the rsync 2.6.9 version and using it to perform backup to my server. My doubt is when i try to copy a file Does rsync is capable of copying the resource forks of that files as well ? Please advise. Thanks in Advance. Janakiram.

Transfer resource forks (-X -E) but not data?
Hello, Our hard drive crashed and we restored a backup under Mac 10.3.9. Unfortunately we lost the executability of the files. The icons do not show up and we have to manually click "Open With" and choose Word/Excel/etc. I have an old backup that has old data, but all of the executibility, permissions, and resource forks are still preserved. Is there anyway to transfer the

some clarity Re: HFS+ resource forks: WIP patch included
I'd note that the mkisofs man page listed about a dozen different formats used in various contexts to store Mac resource forks and finder metadata in various contexts. I'd imagine the advent of MacOSX (with UFS support) has narrowed the field of what options are common somewhat, but it's an area where a lot of ad-hoc solutions made it out to the real world. On the other hand, the

Feature request: Sync Mac OS resource forks and metadata on Mac OS X
I have a feature request for rsync. I tried posting it to the FAQ-o-matic, but that system didn't seem to be accepting new questions. I hope this is an okay list for the request--apologies if it's misdirected. Mac OS X provides support for the Mac file system resource forks and mac specific metadata (e.g., creator and file type). Most Unix applications ignore this information, but it

rsync time machine backup permissions
What is the order that rsync uses to set permissions? Time Machine directories have ACL permissions that basically prohibit making any changes of any kind. In order to make a backup of the directory, you would need to set those permissions after copying everything in the subdirectories. Is rsync smart enough to do it in that order? fsck.ext3 reporting large file I cannot find
I am checking a file system (ext3) as shown below. It is actually a fresh file system, as I had deleted all partitions and created an ext3 file system. But when I run the check with the verbose option, it says I have one large file. Am I missing something here, or is it odd that I cannot find this large file it is reporting? I reviewed some documentation on ext3 file systems, and experimented

HFS+ resource forks: WIP patch included
As you all know, rsync doesn't have any special handling for Mac OS X HFS+ resource forks. Kevin Boyd made RsyncX and rsync_hfs, to address this gap, but they only work when the destination filesystem is also HFS+. I haven't been able to find any references to an rsync that is capable of syncing from HFS+ to UFS (etc). The only solutions I've seen involve lots of preprocessing
