Feature request: Sync Mac OS resource forks and metadata on Mac OS X
I have a feature request for rsync. I tried posting it to the
FAQ-o-matic, but that system didn't seem to be accepting new
questions. I hope this is an okay list for the request--apologies if
it's misdirected.
Mac OS X provides support for the Mac file system resource forks and
mac specific metadata (e.g., creator and file type). Most Unix
applications ignore this information, but it

RSYNC/FreeBSD/Macintosh files...
I am wanting to rsync over mac files to a freebsd 4.5 box, but have
recently found out that rsync does not preserve resource forks, or creator
types and maybe some other things. But, has anybody had any experience like
this, would tar'ing the files and then rsync'ing that seem a worthwhile
solution. There's a lot, so testing is going slowly. Thanks!

Confusion regarding rsync vs. rsyncx
We currently do backup using rsync amongst Linux and Solaris machines.
Modulo an ACL issue that we had to patch, this is working extremely well.
But I want to add our OSX machines to the mix. This is, unfortunately,
leaving me confused about rsyncx.
I can do the normal thing from OSX using rsync. But the page for rsyncx
says - cryptically, in my ignorant opinion - that rsyncx adds support for

Help for a newbie.
Hi all,
I'm new to rsync and I'm trying to do a backup of my home directory,
but I've a problem here. I'm not able to select the directory that I
want to backup and exclude those I don't want to. I've googled a lot
and I've also searched the rsync mailing list archive but without
success, so I hope you can help me. Please forgive me if this is a
trivial question.

Ensuring that rsync doesn't try to write to an unmounted drive
I have a script that runs nightly as a cronjob to backup my drive to a
USB drive https://pastebin.com/yivqrGUC On the command line I use the
--timeout option. Is this sufficient to ensure that if the external
drive somehow becomes unmounted that rsync will gracefully fail without
trying to write to the hard drive instead of the USB drive?
rsync -vaWSHpl --timeout=15 --delete-excluded --filter

HFS support (resource forks)
hi
will the official rsync version in future maybe support HFS(+)
filesystem, like rsyncx does right now? i ask because the rsyncx version
dosen't run on my linuxbox and the feature is only supported if all
systems use rsyncx.

rsync/jscript/cygwin problem
I'm using a javascript program to execute rsync 2.5.6
compiled with cygwin on Windows XP Pro machines.
These backup the user's "My Documents" folder to a
Linux server running rsync 2.5.6 in daemon mode
when the user logs in to XP and certain conditions are
met (e.g. user hasn't backed up for a few days, user
on the network etc).
This works great except every now and then

Rsync of LVM Snapshots copies whole file
Hello, anybody has a clue why this happens?
The scenario:
Each night I create LVM snapshot of my volume which contains some
virtual disk images (VirtualBox VDIs). Then I rsync the content of one
of the snapshot directories to a backup server. Each file size is
between 1.3 GB and 6GB.
I run the following commmand:
sudo -u rsyncbackup rsync -avzP --exclude-from
/home/rsyncbackup/excludefile -e

"Bad address" error
I'm getting a "bad address" error which is causing my rsync process to
bomb out.
I'm running RsyncX 2.1, in daemon mode on the source machine, with a
script to pull the information to the backup server. Both servers are
Xserves running OS X Server 10.2.8. Rsync target is on an Xserve RAID.
The RAID has 350GB free, so I'm not running into a disk full situation.

rsync backups on Mac OS X - mknod errors + icon disappears...
Hi
I am a rsync (on Mac OS X, RsyncX version with extended HFS+/-eahfs
forks) beginner (I merely use it for backing up my desktop machine to a
bootable
external firewire volume, so that I can resume work in case of a
harddrive disaster)
and I got these messages:

rsync filling up hardisk on OSX

I am still ironing out the bugs in my rsync backup soloution. As I said
earlier I have it working working initiating from the macs to the linux
server, sortof. The sortof part is what I am trying to eliminate.

link-dest doesn't seem to work properly on MacOSX
I have been trying to use rsyncx to generate a script for rotating backups
but it seems to me that the --link-dest option doesn't work properly in my
configuration. Instead of creating hard links for all unchanged files it
seems that rsync copies everything, as if --link-dest hasn't been
specificed. Can somebody clarify what's going on?
My script is ptovided below:
