PRNG is not seeded
This is likely a linux or ssh problem, but perhaps someone else on this
list may have encountered it. I have run about 15,000 instances of
rsync in the last year, (about 500 total hours of rsyncing) using ssh
as a transport mechanism ( actually, I am running the dirvish backup
wrapper, www.dirvish.org, around rsync). In all cases, I am pulling
filesystems from a linux client to a linux backup

rsync as a change-detecting security tool
I suspect rsync actually *cannot* be used as a change detection
tool for security purposes, but I want some help with my reasoning.
Imagine a backup system that uses rsync to move files from client
to a trusted server. The backup system operates in "pull" mode,
and the backup server uses rsync to pull files from the client.
Rsync does its magic --link-dest thing, and we detect the

Rysnc Schedule
What I want to do is use rsync to back up a folder to an external drive.
I would like to keep 30 days worth.
For example: I have backups of June 1 - June 30. Once July 1 comes along, I
want to keep June 2 - July 1 and delete June 1, and so forth.
Any ideas how I can accomplish this?

slow Perl on CentOS 5
If your Perl apps are unusually slow on CentOS 5, have a look at this blog:
http://blog.vipul.net/2008/08/24/redhat-perl-what-a-tragedy/
In a nutshell: some Perl apps are 100x slower on RedHat / CentOS 5
compared to other distributions.

Patch: Offline transfer mode
Hi All,
Here's an rsync patch which adds an --offline flag, letting you transfer
changed blocks via removable media, while still comparing checksums via
the net. I expect this could be very popular for the growing number of
people who want to do disk-based offsite backups, which is what I needed
it for.
It took me longer than I hoped, but still only several hours to work
this out -- it

Sad news about JW Schultz
I was saddened to learn today that JW Schultz was found dead back on
March 27th of this year. JW was a big help in the recent development of
rsync and I sorely missed his presence during the last release cycle.
JW was also the author of the Dirvish backup software, and Keith
Lofstrom (who provided me with the sad news) has plans to put some
memorial information onto the new dirvish site as

Bip viol. in E1 cards
Hi all..
I`m with a problem in some E1 cards. The value of Bipolar Viol is too
big, and some times the link seems well, but isn`t work correctly, like
as if the link is down.
Normally, I use to stop asterisk, remove the modules from my card, use
modprove to set up they again, and start asterisk, and it come to work,
but in some times I have to reboot the server, and then the value of

Survival analysis MLE gives NA or enormous standard errors
Hi,
I am trying to fit the following model:
sr.reg.s4.nore <- survreg(Surv(age_sym4,sym4), as.factor(lifedxm),
data=bip.surv)
Where age_sym4 is the age that a subject develops clinical thought
problems; sym4 is whether they develop clinical thoughts problems (0 or
1); and lifedxm is mother's diagnosis: BIPOLAR, MAJOR DEPRESSION, or
CONTROL.
I am interested in whether or not

Wildcard TE110p initial setup
I'm not 'overly' new to asterisk, but I am very new to the Digium card / Telco aspect of it.
I was able to get a TE110p card, installed.. and hooked a t1 up to it. I'm using zttool to just look at 'some' output. Here is what it looks like when I just load it up:

Unable to POST after suspend
Hi,
I just tried the live CD for CentOS 5.0 on a desktop computer and
decided to see if suspend worked. It seems it did, but I'm unable to
start the machine again.
It's a DIY system with an Asus K8V-X motherboard[1], an AMD Clawhammer
3200+ and 1 GB of Kingston ECC RAM. The system has been perfectly stable
despite being utterly abused on a daily basis for almost 3 years.
I've tried:
