Running R on dual/quad Opteron machines
Dear all, I am managing a departmental purchase of an Opteron based workstation/server for scientific computing on which we will be running R. The environment will probably be either Unix/Linux or Solaris and the amount of RAM will be 8-16Gb, depending on the number of processors. My main concerns are the following: 1. How much does R benefit from passing from one processor to two/four

Dual Opteron or Dual Xeon?
I am about to lease another server to be a backup web/mail server with a replicated mysql database. The current live server is a dual Xeon 2.8Ghz. Would I do better to get another Xeon server or an Opteron based server? My concerns are compatibility of the database and the SSL certificate currently running on the Xeon machine. Are these concerns unfounded? TIA Mike

Raid / dual Opteron power issues
Hi All, I've just started caring for a dual Opteron machine. It has a 3Ware 9500S-12 RAID controller, a Tyan S2882G3NR motherboard, 10 IBM 400GB disk drives, and a 650 watt power supply. It has been behaving itself quite nicely until recently. The poor behavior started when I upgraded the OS from CentOS 4.1 (32 bit) to Centos 4.1 (x86_64). When running in uniprocessor mode, the system

Bug#306368: filter rules are too modern for remote rsync (which is 2.5.6)
I received the following bug report for the Debian rsync package today. I wouldn't have expected 2.6.4 to refuse to talk to even a 2.6.2 in this way... Perhaps Wayne could comment? Corrupted index file w/Procmail in FC2
Hello: We have a Fedora Core 2 (FC2) server with Dovecot and Procmail. Versions are: dovecot-0.99.13-4.FC2 procmail-3.22-13 We use "maildir" below home directory like: /users/operaciones/epezoa/maildir, where "epezoa" is my account. If I receive an e-mail, is stored at "new" folder. When I try to get e-mail from server, message is transfered from

Kernel Oplocks and FC2
Hi All, I am running Samba version 3.0.7-2.FC2. I've been noticing the following messages in /var/log/messages: Sep 22 09:35:47 www kernel: lease broken - owner pid = 6024 Sep 22 09:36:32 www kernel: lease broken - owner pid = 25134 I've been told that if I place "kernel oplocks = false" in my smb.conf file, I won't see this message any more. However, if I do this, does

FC2 RPMs of wine
I was reading the WINE Traffic #245 and so I thought about trying the RPMs that Vincent produces for FC2. Before I installed them I looked at the file contents and noticed that there does not seem to be a "fake windows" drive setup in the RPM and that the Windows User tools like Notepad and Control are not in the RPM. Is there another RPM that I need to get to install these tools?

dependency help for FC2 rpm
I am having difficulty with dependencies for the R rpm for Fedora Core 2. In attempting to load R-2.0.0.0.fdr.1.fc2.i386.rpm it fails the libtk8.4.so dependency even though I have this library loaded. The library is located in: /usr/local/lib. How might I tell R where to find this library? I am new to Linux and loading rpms so I am hoping there is a simple answer and that the problem is

A smbd process pegging CPU at near 100% with v3.0.10-1 FC2 RPM
CPU 99.3%: 2170 root 25 0 11656 3228 10m R 99.3 0.5 0:07.42 smbd We're having the same problems as many others with print queues, client lock-ups, etc. I think maybe this CPU problem is related as we have two servers in two locations with the same versions, and both had the problem immediately after upgrading to 3.0.10. We use the YUM facility to upgrade Samba. To react to these

Permission denied after upgrade to FC2
Well, after hearing nothing, and being irritated enough with this problem, I did some exhaustive googling and turned up with this: http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-June/msg00769.html Apparently there are now 2 security policy changes you must make on a 2003 dc instead of just the one like before. Once I had our Win Admin make the change, I was able to smbmount everything again.

Wine on FC2 crashes on File Selection dialog
Hi List, My FC2 Wine installation crashes (without any message displayed) on every application which shows the std. file selection dialog (eg File - Open) as soon as I change the directory in the dialog or click "OK" or "Cancel". This even happens with the stock "notepad" that comes with Wine. "Winefile" however can browse the file systems correctly,
