[patch] suggestions for -v option
The attached patch makes two changes to the behavior of the -v option: 1) The initial "building file list ... done" and the last two lines with transfer statistics are moved to verbose level 2, which means that you have to specify -vv to see them. When I use -v, I only want to see which files are being updated. Perhaps the statistics could be controlled by a separate option,

[patch] output of rsync -n truncated
I noticed that the output of "rsync -n" is sometimes truncated. Even when you repeat the same command, the output may be different. I'm using rsync-2.5.5 on a Debian woody system with ext3 file systems. One scenario to reproduce this behavior is someting like this: # rsync -aR /usr/share/zoneinfo /tmp # rsync -n -avRH localhost:/usr/share/zoneinfo /tmp receiving file list ... done

[patch] making rsync less verbose
Unless you suppress all output with the -q option, rsync will always print an initial "building/receiving file list ... done" line. In my opinion, this is a bit superfluous. When I want to see a progress indication, I can use the --progress option. Another issue is the 3-line transfer speed and speedup factor report at the end. So every rsync invocation produces at least four lines of

[Bug 2645] --one-file-system semantics changed with 2.6.4 (bug?)
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2645 ------- Additional Comments From dalgoda@ix.netcom.com 2005-04-24 11:36 ------- It looks like the culprit is the change for receiver.c 1.130. It pulled the call to send_file_list(-1,...), which is what handled the one_file_system code. It's not like we can easily go back either, since flist.c 1.267 removed support for f=-1. Bummer. --

rsync: race condition can cause loss of diagnostic output
[This is a copy of the contents of Debian bug report #147842.] Package: rsync Version: 2.5.5-0.2 Severity: normal Cause ----- - rsync forks a child which in turn forks a grandchild in main.c:do_recv(). - Diagnostics written by the grandchild need to be read by the child using read_error_fd() to be handled properly (with the end result being that they are seen by the user running rsync). -

mirror whole hard disk with rsync
I want to create an exact copy of a whole hard disk and to maintain this copy synchronised with the "original" one. The idea is to have a safe backup that allows me, in case the "original" disk fails, to change it by the "clone" disk and start the computer as if nothing had happened. The computer runs Linux. I heard a good option for this purpose is to use dd to

[patch] option to prevent connection timeout
Hi, The firewall at work doesn't allow me to make a direct SSH connection to the Internet, so I use the ProxyCommand to tunnel SSH through a HTTP proxy. This works fine, except for the fact that the HTTP proxy server closes the connection after 60 seconds of inactivity. Attached below is a patch that implements a new configuration option called "Idle" that lets you specify the

[PATCH] ignore-non-existing-directory: add variant of ignore-non-existing
From: "Robin H. Johnson" <robbat2 at gentoo.org> Add new option --ignore-non-existing-directory, that is a variant of --ignore-non-existing, but applies ONLY to directories. This was previously proposed in bug #8366, but I indepentantly had a use case for it in the Gentoo infrastructure. X-URL: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8366 X-URL:

Samba priting problem, might be windows printer defintion
Hi Sunmanagers I still have a problem with my samba printing mechanism. When I log on some windows machines it will not print. I have found out that when I print from some machines while the print queu is stopped then the jobs are saved there as root. When I print from other machines they are saved as my name. I can print from dos by using echo something > \\server\printer. I can print with

--delete and --dirs
rsync-2.6.6 manpage says: --delete [...] This option has no effect unless directory recursion is enabled. True. In fact, I noted that --delete doesn't delete anything if --dirs is used rather than --recursive. Is there any reason for --delete not to delete when used with --dirs? Is there a way to get rsync to actually delete files on the receiving end when using

Multi-monitor TwinView DirectX wierdness
I'm hoping somebody can tell me how to fix this. I use Altium Designer 10 with Wine on Fedora 14. I'm using nVidia TwinView with a GeForce GTS450. What happens is that when I have the window on my left screen, I have 3D acceleration, but the GDI text overlays disappear. When I move the window to the right hand screen, I lose 3D acceleration, but my GDI text overlays (PCB trace net names)

[PATCH] --source-filter && --dest-filter for rsync 2.5.6
Hi, I needed to filter content of files (encrypt), before they are sent over the network to backup server. The easiest way to do this was modifying Kyle Jones's "--dest-filter" patch. Somebody was asking there this feature in the past, so I'm sending this patch to list. Implementation details: -filtering disables rsync alogrithm -source filter makes temporary files in /tmp

new option implemented: --delete-mdays
Hi folks, we would like your feedback on a new option we have implemented. We would like to know whether it should be merged into the CVS tree. Perhaps one of the rsync developers can have a look at the code, improve it where necessary, and committ it to CVS. The name of the option is "--delete-mdays=DAYS" and it works in conjunction with the option "--delete." It modifies

[PATCH] Limit recursion depth
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hy folks, everybody knows, that rsync eats up a lot of memory, when rsyncing a lot of files. To avoid this i run rsync on different parts of the directory-tree (e.g. first ~muchofileuser/muchofilesdir1 then ~muchofileuser/muchofilesdir2 and so on) and it works fine for me. So i tried to do this in a automatical way (e.g perl/shell/whatever

Differentiating debug messages from both sides
Some of the debug messages that rsync outputs (when verbose >= 2) can occur on both sides of the connection. This makes it hard to know which program is saying what. Some debug messages deal with this by outputting a "[PID]" string at the start of the message. Unfortunately, the startup message that tells us which pid is which is only output when verbose >= 3, so there's a
