where is "average shifted histogram"?
Hello!
In the book Modern Applied Statistics with S (4th ed),
section 5.6 the concept of the "average shifted
histogram" or ASH is mentionend. Also it is mentioned
in the same section "The code used is in the scripts
for this chapter" (from figure caption 5.8, analysis
of the geyser duration data).
*However*, I have trouble finding the code for that
function! Admittedly, I am a

PCA problem in R
Dear all:
When I have more variables than units, say a 195*10896 matrix which has
10896 variables and 195 samples. prcomp will give only 195 principal
components. I checked in the help, but there is no explanation that why
this happen. Can we get more than 195 PCs for this case? Thank you very
much.
Best!

Schema.rb and MySQL decimal
Hi,
I have a mysql schema with some decimal(20,20) fields. Now, I made a
rake db_schema_dump for deployment of my applications on other machines.
Rails created a schema.rb with the decimal fields as float.
After a rake db_schema_import the fields are just float not decimal. How
can I force rails to create decimal(20,20) columns instead of float?
Thx.

Samba for VMS
I just installed Samba for VMS (1.9.17p4) on a DecServer 1000A running VMS
7.1
The University Network is primarily NT Server 4.0 SP5. My experience is
with Netware and NT, not with VMS, but I have the luck of supporting the
system.....
My main question is about Encrypted Passwords.....Does this release of Samba
support them, or do I have to modify the clients who want access to our

[OT] Red Hat binary compatibility, from Red Hat Linux 4.0 to Fedora Core 3 (and RHEL4) ...
I wrote part of a FAQ last November, and if you're interested in the
breakdown of GCC, GLibC and kernel adoption since Red Hat Linux 4.0,
you'll want to read this:
http://www.geocities.com/thebs413/RH-Distribution-FAQ-3.html
I've been loosely working on a "Linux Configuration Management" book
covering Red Hat distributions since. I might update this FAQ if I have

Red Hat Directory Server
Anyone played with or know the status of Red Hat Directory Server on
CentOS 5? I had some problems getting this to work on CentOS 4.4, but
am very interested in using this instead of regular OpenLDAP as it
supports two way synchronization to Active Directory.

Red Hat Directory Server + Fedora Directory Server version correlation?
Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone knows about version-number correlation between
RHDS and FDS. I've sofar been quite unable to find anything about it.
The latest version of seems to be 7.1SP3:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/dir-server/
And the latest version of FD seems to be 1.0.4:

Most sources I could find state that "FDS and RHDS

Red Hat 5.2''s login doesn''t do PAM session management correctly
This is a "heads up" for anyone who relies on PAM session management in
order to clean up after a login session. Red Hat 5.2''s login does not
perform PAM session management correctly, potentially resulting in sessions
which lose their authentication before the login shell starts.
login.c in Red Hat 5.2''s util-linux package was modified so that it no

Debian vs. Red Hat
Can anyone provide me with their (fairly) impartial opinion on which major
current distribution (Debian 1.2 or Red Hat 4.0) provides better security?
I have heard a lot of people sticking up for their favorite, but few real
facts/insights on them from a security point of view. Red Hat seems to be
favored by novices for no-brainer installation and graphical configuration
programs (which

Switchtower to Red Hat with Lighttpd
It looks and acts like it should all work, but after I run a "rake
deploy", Lighttpd never responds to another request. I have to go
and kill and restart Lighttpd, which sort of defeats the purpose of
using Switchtower.
Is anyone else having similar problems?

Problem with samba on red hat enterprise 3 and windows 2000.
Hello.
I am currently experiencing a very strange problem with
samba on Red HAt Enterprise 3 and windows 2000.
Everything will work fine and I can access the samba share
from windows and then all of a sudden it will drop and
if I go into linux it wont appear but the service will
say its running. This also happens when I reboot windows.
It will take a good 10 minutes for the samba share on

I am new to PXE booting and I have a question about PXE within Red Hat
I find an RPM called PXE in legacy (9.0 and earlier) versions of Redhat
Linux but I don't find it in more recent versions. Is there a reason
for this or am I missing something?
Is there, somewhere, an instruction for setting up PXE under Red Hat
Fedora Core or Red Hat Enterprise?
I want to roll out a large number of machines with only an Ethernet card
for I/O and PXE seems to be The Right

Problem with winecfg on Red Hat Linux
A colleague insalled Wine for me on a 32-bit Red Hat Linux server
yesterday. I am not trying to install an
application called LIMDEP under Wine. The documentation says to start a
script called winecfg. When I invoke that script, all I get is a gray
box on my screen with a few tabs. No text appears on the screen. If I
click on some of the tabs, there are drop-down menus, which also have
no text.

APC Back-UPS ES 500 and Red Hat 7.3
I have an older system which has a simple APC Back-UPS ES 500 connected
via USB. I built nut 2.0.2 from source and am attempting to get it to work.
I had to manually create the device links and I think it's ok because
hidups is recognizing the UPS but any attempts to read data from it fail:
[root@server bin]# ./hidups -D -D -D /dev/usb/hid/hiddev0

Fonts do not display properly in R 2.5.1 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
Dear All
I posted a similar question quite some time ago, but that was on an old
OS and an old version of R. This time I have RHEL 4, which is still
supported as an OS, and R 2.5.1 which is not *that* old.
My sessionInfo() gives:
