[fdo] Request to host project "OpenSync" a synchronization framework
Hi i am Armin Bauer, one of the developers of Multisync, an application to sync various pdas, cellulars and other programs (see www.multisync.org for further information) We recently ran into design limitations with our current version, which was where we decided to develop a new major version of Multisync. I started working on the new design but quickly noticed to there are a lot of other

benchmarking rsync's -z compression utility
Hi, Is there a way in which rsync's -z compression (zlib) utility can be benchmarked? I'm trying to compare the compression ratio between rsync and external compression tools like gzip and bzip2. Are there any advantages to using rsync's internal compression mechanism specified with the -z option compared to solely applying external compression i.e. bzip2 to the files and invoking

Rolling Checksum Algorithms
Hi, Where can I get good pointers on the rolling checksum algorithm used in rsync? I need an 8-bit or 12-bit rolling checksum too. Any place where "rolling" checksum algorithms are discussed? state of the rsync nation? (revisited 6/2003 from 11/2000)
I'm interested in these very questions (librsync-rsync relationship, remaining limitations of rsync, active prospects for ground-up rewrites), Google searches for rsync info have proved a little too vague due to the programs ubiquity. Much has certainly changed since this was written, could some people with knowledge in these areas could update martin's response for the state of rsync,

Vorbis suitable for PDAs?
As Linux is starting to apperar on handhelds the tought of having a portable Vorbis-player is everpresent in my mind. However, one things worries me... A user running linux on his (ipaq?) PDA reported skipping and halted playback using mpeg123. Apparently this was caused by lack of processor resources because mpeg123 was programmed for a FPU-enabled CPU. (Thus performing very poor on a

rsync protocol description
Hello, I'm currently evaluating the possibility of implementing a rsync client in a project for my company. The platform used is currently not supported and implementing the client from scratch currently seems to be the most feasible approach. For that I'd be very much interested in a description of the protocol that rsync talks on port 873. Is such a description available somewhere? I

compression, built-in or ssh ?
What is the general recommendation for compression when using ssh? Is it a wasteful performance hit to have both ssh and rsync do compression (when using rsync over ssh)? If so, is there a clear prefference which is more efficient, rsync or ssh? Brian K. White -- brian@aljex.com -- http://www.aljex.com/bkw/

FTP at rsync.samba.org down?
Hello, just being fascinated by rsync I wanted to look at the distribution files at ftp://rsync.samba.org, but it was not possible to get a ftp connection to that address. Is the ftp service down there? Thanks in advance for any soon helpful hint. Have a nice day Michael -- Michael Schmidt mschmidt@fh-koblenz.de MIRROR OF Ghostscript * X-Windows X11

rsync for transferring harddrive images
Hi, I have a project where I have to backup (copy /dev/hda on a server) and recover (copy back) hardrives from the clients. I tried this with rsync using: BACKUP: rsync /dev/hda user@host:/path/to/image RECOVER: rsync user@host:/path/to/image /dev/hda There is a problem when accessing devices like /dev/hda. The transfer aborts after a few seconds with the error message: write failed on

offline rsync
hello, I'm new to this list. here is my question: I would like to synchronize two computers (say the home one and the job one) using zip drives or similar (cdroms, etc), since modem lines are quite slow and expensive (in Italy). I though I could produce the "signature" of files on home computer, store it on a zip, go to job, run rsync to copy the missing or altered files on

[rproxy-devel] rdiff deltas not very good compared to pysync, why?

rsync anti-FUD
I'm working on a commercial project that would benefit immensely from the use of rsync. However, I cannot convince management that rsync is a worthy tool due to the rote "it's shareware, it's not supported" FUD. Are there any documented, corportate users of rsync? Testimonials? In short, how do I drag this risk-averse group out of the FTP age into the rsync present? /p

OpenSSH on PalmOS possible?
A thought has been bugging me for a month or so, but I don't know where to look for the answer. Would it be possible to port the OpenSSH ssh client to PalmOS and other handheld OS'es like Symbian (EPOC) or PocketPC? Is the processor on PDA's fast enough? Would many libraries have to be ported aswell? I know that PalmOS and EPOC has an IP stack implemented.. Since the development

Problems with VersaMail on PalmOS
I'm at the early stages of debugging this problem, but in case I can save some time because somebody else has already come across these issues I thought I'd try a quick post. I have an installation of Dovecot 0.99.14-1sarge0 from the Debian stable tree (so nothing cutting edge, but it's proving stable and reliable) that I am connecting to from a Palm TX with VersaMail 3.1C over IMAP.

Speex hardware requirements?
Compared to todays PDAs the GameBoy Advance (GBA) is low spec. it has a 16MHz ARM7tdmi RISC processor. 32-bit but it can handle 16-bit instructions in a mode that resembles "bytecode" (a 32-bit instruction is executed using a 16-bit instruction). I got a feeling that the GBA would need a FPU. For more information on the GBA visit this info page:

Outgoing calls for a fancy address book app
Hi ! I'd like to connect phpgroupware to asterisk: when a user click on a phone number, his phone rings and he gets connected to the number he just clicked. I've tried by putting various files in /var/spool/asterisk/outgoing, without results (we are using SIP phones + CAPI channels). Is there a way to do that ? Byte order in ogg vorbis headers
Hello all, I am currently writing an application for PalmOS handheld devices that organizes media files on a memory card and allows the user to easily create playlists. The tracks I am using for testing (totalling about 1.5 GB) are nearly all in Ogg Vorbis format. Throughout my testing I have had very little trouble in parsing the comment fields from mp3, asf and ogg files. That is, all

PDA as source client
Has anybody used anything other than a PC as a source for icecast2? Are PDAs powerfull enough? I know vorbis encoding takes a signifigant amount of CPU power, but I've been able to do it on 4 year old PCs. Does a 206MHz Intel StrongARM 32-bit RISC processor have as much power as a 200 Mhz Pentium? I'm thinking Compaq iPaq, running Familiar Linux and IceS, would make a nice portable
