R-beta: ctest_0_9-3_tar.tar
I'm having trouble un 'tar'ing the file ctest_0_9-3_tar.tar. When using the command "tar -xv" on a UNIX machine I get the "checksum error" message. When trying to use WinZip on a Win95 machine it gives an error reading the header. I'm downloading from the CRAN site at Carnegie Mellon. Could the file there be corrupted? Thanks for any help, and sorry if

anonymous "on demand" file transfers?
Hello All, Is it possible to serve up files anonymously via a folder of my choosing on demand? >From time to time where I work, we transfer large file heirarchies between co-workers and contractor workstations, and we've gotten away with tar'ing things up or using something like webfs (or Python -m SimpleHTTPServer) on one end and 'wget -r http://remote-server' on the the

Customizing the package build process
I've made a package for which R CMD build isn't producing very satisfactory results. I'll get to the details in a moment. I wonder if it would make sense to have my own makefiles (which already exist and are doing quite a lot) produce the .tar.gz file ordinarily produced by R CMD build. As far as I can tell, R CMD build basically tars up of the project directory after running some

Makefiles and other customization
Writing R Extensions mentions that a package developer can provide a Makefile, but gives very little information about what should be in it. It says there must be a clean target, and later on there's mention of $(SHLIB): $(OBJECTS) $(SHLIB_LINK) -o $@ $(OBJECTS) $(ALL_LIBS) (in the F95 discussion). What should a Makefile provide, and what can it assume? In other words,

Feature request: Sync Mac OS resource forks and metadata on Mac OS X
I have a feature request for rsync. I tried posting it to the FAQ-o-matic, but that system didn't seem to be accepting new questions. I hope this is an okay list for the request--apologies if it's misdirected. Mac OS X provides support for the Mac file system resource forks and mac specific metadata (e.g., creator and file type). Most Unix applications ignore this information, but it

rsync-ing on MacOS X.
Hi all, I'm setting up a backup script for my Mac, and I'm wondering about the rsync ability of dealing with HFS+ filesystem (resource-fork and such...). I've searched the mailing list archive for this topic and I've found some thread regarding it, but it's not clear to me what is the actual situation. Is the HFS+ officially supported? Will it be in the near future?

Can I install in the following fashion?
<permit me my perhaps foolish preference...an explanation> I run mail service for a small college. I've long joked that if someone stole the mail server, the phone would ring before the alarm (which has a 1 minute delay) did, that the user base expected 25x8x367 coverage. Making updates/upgrades to the mail server feels like a tightrope walk with no net. I always appreciated

Email/GroupWare Suite
Just wanted to get some thoughts from the list..... We are a public k-12 school and are looking to migrate to a groupware style system for out staff to collaborate better. Video Editing
This is kind of a new area for me so I thought I would get the lists opinion. I have a avi video that I need to edit. The main thing that I need to accomplish is to maybe cut the top 1/3 of the frame and blur out a few faces. What would you guys recommend for an app that would accomplish this? Thanks in advance for any info. -- Bo Lynch

Ideas for stopping ssh brute force attacks
just wanted to get some feedback from the community. Over the last few days I have noticed my web server and email box have attempted to ssh'd to using weird names like admin,appuser,nobody,etc.... None of these are valid users. I know that I can block sshd all together with iptables but that will not work for us. I did a little research on google and found programs like sshguard and
