Samba serving files with *very* long access times
I access files on our Cray T3E from my Windows 2000 PC via a Samba share.
One of the volumes on the T3E is managed by Cray's Data Migration facility
(DMF). The majority of the DMF files are stored off-line and restored to
disk as necessary. This operation typically takes 3-5 minutes.
Normally when a Windows 2000 application tries to read data from one of the
off-line files--even if it's

Rsync Performance In Windows
Has anyone else experienced high CPU usage when using RSYNC in windows 2000
server? I am using the rsync.exe (and applicable DLL's) from the cygwin
installation (I am not however running cygwin on this machine).
The linux machine connecting to the windows rsync daemon has a very low
performance hit when the session is running (see below). However, the
windows machine, which has a much

How to setup Rsync as an NT Service
For a recent project I needed to run Rsync as a service on Windows NT. The
following is a link to the instructions I created to recreate my steps.
http://members.home.net/cbollerud2/projects/rsync/NTService.html
The "no-fork" patch used here is very similar to the "no-detach" option
mentioned in many previous posts. I wish I could take credit for it, but I

Is there any plan to do it?
Is it maybe already in and just not documented?

Windows and default --modify-window=0
Uhm... rsync developers: what do you think about changing the default
modify-window in the Cygwin platform?
It seems to me that many problems people have are just because of the
granularity of timestamp.
Maybe changing the default could be the best choice. That would be
documented in the "man" and in my release announcement on
cygwni-annouce, of course.
Just an idea, maybe it's

Rsync server on w2k with ssh
Help !
I am running rsync as a service on w2k successfully
using the patch from http://v.iki.fi/~vherva/cygwin-rsync/
I would like to connect to the windows machine from Linux, to
automatically backup the windows machine without user intervention.
I understand that there are network problems using the native rsync
transport under windows. How do I setup ssh with a w2k server?
I have the ssh

Strong encryption
We need to encrypt files before transferring them to the destination
Host for security reasons.
Encryption must be strong: IDEA, 3DES or similar.
One way would be the integration of PGP into rsync.
Is there any PGP integration into rsync available ?
Thank?s Clemens

Recent FSF Compromise and rsync ... pgp keys?
Hi, folks.
I've been quite concerned about Open Source and the recent FSF compromise.
I realize that FSF does not seem to have rsync, but prudence would dictate
that I check other sources as well.
Could someone please e-mail the public key for rsync to the list or to me
directly?

compression, built-in or ssh ?
What is the general recommendation for compression when using ssh?
Is it a wasteful performance hit to have both ssh and rsync do compression
(when using rsync over ssh)?
If so, is there a clear prefference which is more efficient, rsync or ssh?

Special files and Cygwin
Hi,
I'm trying to use rsync to backup a linux filesystem
to a windows server.
I followed the hints that I found at
http://www.tiarnan.phlegethon.org/rsyncntdoc.html to
run rsync on windows, and it works quite well.
The only problem I found is that windows is not able
to backup linux special files (/dev/*).
I don't know if the problem is in the way rsync has
been compiled, or simply in

Rsync / SSH / Cygwin .. permission problems..
I am attempting to use rsync to "mirror" data between several windows 2000
and windows XP systems. I am a UNIX person by nature, so decided the
easiest way to go about doing this would be to use Cygwin with cron and ssh
running as services, then run the rsync connection nightly through cron.
Cygwin is installed on both systems and works perfectly. OpenSSH is
installed and running,

rsync without syncing file permissions under W2K
Hi there,
I'm playing arround with rsync under W2K in conjunction with the
cygwin environment.
What I want is to get rsync copy a folder tree from one W2K machine
to another W2K machine through a firewall.
I installed the cygwin on both machines and got the rsync running
which is using an openssh connection with public key authentication.
Everything works fine except for the assignment of

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Here goes the announcement of the 2.6.2-3 package for cygwin (available
from cygwin's setup itself).
If you wonder what "2.6.2-3" means, it's basically the third "cygwin
package" that uses rsync-2.6.2 sources.
This third attempt solves both the august security fix and the textmode
bug that 2.6.2-2 had.

Rsync and windows
Hi there,
I have a problem syncronizing a windows machine with a linux box.
I want to backup the "My Documents" folder. Therefore I burned the data
on a cdrom because the windows pc is only connected over a slow wan
connection to the linux box. When I copy the data to the users home
directory (using samba and another windows pc) and run the rsync program
all the files are copied once
