Allow updates but not upgrades
Hi.
At the moment it seems my machines just update to the latest current
release . I install a 6.0 machine and run yum update , and next thing
its 6.2 .
I have a requirement where I need machines to only upgrade to even
numbered sub releases eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 and only on my approval. But
will allow updates within a given release.
How can I achieve this ?
If I sync the repositories for eg: 6.0

Best way to hold at 5.3 release
I need to do some testing with 5.3 as its suggested that 5.4 has
"some bugs in the toolchain and libc". That being the case, I can
install with a url and repo line pointing to a mirror with 5.3 still
but how does one properly make sure during subsequent uses of yum it
doesn't attempt to use 5.4 rpms?
Is it simple enough to just manually set '$releasever' to 5.3 in the
repo

Problem compiling Samba from source
Hi,
It's taken me ages to get past teh compile dependencies and having to
build most of the dependencies from source. I then ran make and within
a few short compilations the samba3 make fails with the following
errors:
~/samba-3.5.5/source3> make
Using CFLAGS = -I../lib/zlib -I/app/utils//include -O -I.

It's been a while since v2.2.1. I think all of the bad bugs in v2.2

are still some small URLAUTH bugs left though, so you might want to wait
before enabling it in production (imap_urlauth_host is empty by

my local mirror stopped working
Hey folks,
I've had a local mirror set up for some time now and it has always
worked, but suddently stopped. I don't think the fact that it
stopped work has anything to do with when I blew away that machine and
changed it from Centos 5.3 to a Fedora Core 11 box. But I'm not sure
how that could make any difference since it is just serving that stuff
over the web. It still works

Spacewalk Client Tools from Stahnma
Dear Patrice,
I have noticed that you are referencing to the Stahnma repository for
Spacewalk Client Tools. These are quite old and I would suggest to use
the tools from:
http://spacewalk.redhat.com/yum
instead. Mr. Suchy already pushed some of the packages to Fedora/EPEL
so they might be available there, soon.
Besides that the Spacewalk Team is thinking about a split between

Spacewalk or Puppet?
I am a little new to managing large numbers of CentOS/RHEL servers and was wondering what you experienced sysadmins prefer, Spacewalk or Puppet?
Thanks,

Spacewalk? Local repo? Cache?
I have a mix of CentOS 5, 6, and now 7 servers at work. There are enough of them now that it is starting to make sense for them to get updates from an internal source.
I've seen RHN Satellite in years past. It looks like it may be a way to allow Windows admins here (familiar with WSUS) to update Linux boxes. A local repo might be easier to set up, but (as with Spacewalk) it seems like

Spacewalk howto for CentOS 5
Hi,
I would like to contribute a howto page about the configuration of
Spacewalk for package management under CentOS 5. Spacewalk is the
upstream project for the source of RedHat Network Satellite. It provides
a management interface for software updates across registered servers
and desktops.
Here is were I would like to put this page:

CentOS 6 sync from ftp yum repos into Spacewalk
Hello,
When I try to sync CentOS 6 from different ftp mirrors using spacewalk
command "spacewalk-repo-sync" I get this message " 'Unable to load
package', 'Invalid information uploaded to the server' " for 38
packages. When I check, these 38 packages are not named correctly.
For example, sync command is looking for

Wiki contribution
Hi guys,
I want to update and add some content to this page:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/PackageManagement/Spacewalk
The page have instructions for Spacewalk 0.6, but there's a newer
version (0.7) and some changes are needed. I already updated my
spacewalk install and would like to contribute with the wiki page.
More information about spacewalk can be found here:

some files vanished before... but which?
Hi !
I`m getting "rsync warning: some files vanished before they could be transferred (code 24) at main.c(1518) [generator=3.0.9]" on one of my systems i`m backing up with rsync , but rsync doesn`t show WHICH files.
Does anybody have a clue under which circumstances rsync doesn`t show these ?

Setting up new spacewalk server
We have a DHCP/PXE server in a build environment, which is separate from
our Spacewalk v1.5 server. We direct builds to Satellite or Spacewalk based
as needed. It contains initrd & vmlinuz files for each version/arch we
currently deploy for both RHEL & CEL.
I'd like to keep the storage footprint to a minimum, if possible. Keeping a
big directory of ISOs to loop-mount for kickstart
