e2fsprogs Help.
Hello, Hope you will forgive me for asking some very simple question about e2fsprogs. I am very new to the kernel as well as file system programming. My task is to collect superblock, inode, bitmap ( or free list) information from ext2/ext3 filesysteam. After searching the google, I came to know about e2fsprogs, which I was able to install and use at least "dumpe2fs" utility. This

Is ext4 safe for a production server?
I am about to install a new server running CentOS 5.4. The server will contain pretty critical data that we can't afford to corrupt. I would like to benefit from the extra speed and features of a ext4 filesystem but I don't have any experience with it. Is there some member of the list who can enlighten me on whether ext4 is mature enough to be used on a production server without too

EXT4 status for centos 5.3
Hi, I was wondering what is the current status fro ext4 support in Centos. I've noticed that is marked as dev when I try to use it from the installer. Does anybody have a scary story to prevent using it? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... 5.3 and ext4
Is 5.3 and ext4 going to be safe? I have seen a couple reports of data loss using ext4? Has this already been fixed? What does the list recommend? ext3/ ext4? Thought maybe today we would start seeing 5.3 showing up... Looking forward to it. Jerry

ext4 not on a bootable partition
Just tried running a configuration on 5.6 with ext4 as the "/" partitition. I got the error that cannot boot ext4 partition. bummer.... I know this is just a boot issue and make the ext3 but I was disappointed. Maybe 6.0 will have ext4 bootable. jerry

unofficial ext3 and ext4 compare
I have something like 300G I routinely backup. This includes some large 12Gig images and other files. I had been using ext3 on an external USB disk for part of the process. Under ext3 doing "rsync -a /home /mnt/external_back/backup.jun.27.2011" it took 200 minutes. I took the same computer, same external HD and reformatted it for ext4 (mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdd1). I then started the same

Convert Filesystem to Ext4
On a running 64 bit CentOS 5.6 box is it possible to convert from Ext3 to Ext4 to improve performance? Right now I can deal with a few hours of downtime on it. This is an email server with lots of I/O due to seek time. Software RAID1 as well. Will Ext4 offer much of an improvement?

ext4 in CentOS 5.6?
I'm sure many are running ext4 FS's in production, but just want to be re-assured that there are not currently any major issues before starting a new project that looks like it will be using ext4. I've previously been using xfs but the software for this project requires ext3/ext4. I'm always very cautious before jumping onto a new FS, (new in the sense it is officially supported

Is zerofree or resize2fs applicable to ext4?
Hi all, Can I ask if zerofree or resize2fs could also be applicable to ext4? Guestfish help of these two commands indicates that they are applicable to ext2/3. But ext4 is not covered in the help. However, I have tested these two commands in my Fedora 12 laptop, and it seems that both commands work well with ext4. So I don't quite understand why the help of these two commands only mention

ext4 support in anaconda?
Hi, it looks like, I cannot format a partition as ext4 while install. I thought upstream has ext4 fully supported in 5.6? I looked in release notes but only found reference to ext4 in RHEL5.6 My install is netinstall.iso 64bit release 5.6 as Virtualbox VM. Thx Rainer

ext4 or XFS
Hi all, I've a 30TB hardware based RAID array. Wondering what you all thought of using ext4 over XFS. I've been a big XFS fan for years as I'm an Irix transplant but would like your opinions. This 30TB drive will be an NFS exported asset for my users housing home dirs and other frequently accessed files. - aurf

Is EXT4 filesystem production ready in CenTOS 5.x series?
Hi Guys, We run CENTOS 5.8 in some of our servers. We would like to know whether EXT4 filesystem is ready for production use in CENTOS 5.8 OS? We couldn't find ext4 utility mkfs.ext4 in our CENTOS 5.8 servers. Can anyone help us?

Ext4 improvements
Please be patient with my ignorance if what I am asking is meaningless in any way. I am not too technically knowledgeable about filesystem internals but I am willing to learn. (I thought of posting to linux-ext4 but did not want to intrude within the technical threads with my layman thread.) Rsync ACLs over NFSv4 to EXT4 - rsync_xal_set: lsetxattr - Operation not supported
I think this is an NFS or ext4 question, but wanted to post this here for a sanity check. :) I've been searching for over a week for a solution and have turned up nil. I'm trying to rsync with options -AX over an NFSv4 mount TO an ext4 drive FROM an ext4 drive and both have acl and user_xattr enabled. The command: rsync -aAX /data/ /mnt/back/data results in: rsync:
